Okay, someone ELI5 what is going on with the whole "Heathcliff without Heathcliff" thing? Was the comic discontinued?

Find the first post in this community for an explanation of why Heathcliff doesn't have Heathcliff in it.

Heathcliff is still being made each day. Well, except this week which are reruns*. The creator handed everything over to his nephew in 1998 and his nephew started taking in a different direction with more absurdism and anti-joke material which made it dramatically different than the rest of the comics out there. It took a while for this to catch on but more people read Heathcliff today than they did in 1997.

If you like Monry Python and Pratchett then this is great. If not then current Heathcliff and especially Heathcliff without Heathcliff will make no sense. Which is fine. It just means you are on the center of the bell curve or a standard division or two to the left. If everyone got it then it would be as boring as a focus group tested nugget dipping sauce at at a fast food corporation.

  • You can tell because of the more saturated color scheme.

Something similar had been done with Garfield I thought was the first time something like that had been done. It’s essentially the comic Heathcliff, a one-panel comics about a cat, with the title character removed. It actually creates quite a different feel than Garfield without Garfield. In those it’s often Jon just sounding crazy like he’s just talking to himself. In HwoH, they sometimes take on a different meaning or sometimes work just as well without Heathcliff. As far as I can tell the original comic is still being produced, though a different person took over from the original in 1998.

If your question is "why do I keep seeing this incomprehensible thing in my feed then":

  • I was doing it anyway so this is a place to put it.
  • I started posting here during the reddit moderator revolt of 2023.
  • There is an inverse relationship with life satisfaction and how far down you scroll on Lemmy or literally anything else. If Heathcliff without Heathcliff can save even one person with tasty food then it was worth it

You saved me.

Not anything to do with scrolling or not scrolling or tasty food. These are just great.
