Looks confused while using hair scissors for coax cable

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 35 points 1 year ago

Scissors for cutting paper have blades with a blunter angle. This allows for clean cutting through the paper while remaining sharp. They are not sharp enough for cutting fabric effectively.

Fabric scissors have blades with no serrations and a very sharp angle. They are sharper than paper scissors. If they are used to cut paper, they will become dull.

...

All paper products contain minerals that are abrasive and will eventually dull a pair of razor-sharp fabric scissors.

I've never had these issues with scissors and other people. Knives now, that's a different story

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My husband has a knife only he's allowed to use

[–] Mothra@mander.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

Understandable. We also got knives assigned in my family. You can only use some knives and you are not always allowed to sharpen them. These things are important in order to keep the peace.

You're a godless heathen.

Not all scissors cut, some satisfy.

Even my wife doesn't know that

[–] gloriousspearfish@feddit.dk 3 points 1 year ago

My wife often praises my mother for having thought me from an early age that using the fabric scissors is a deadly sin.

OP please know that I would sue both pairs to cut my toe nails.

[–] drlecompte@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 1 year ago

You can't sue scissors. They have deep knowledge of the law.

It isn't the paper that dulls scissors, it's the silica in white paper. Craft paper is fine. Although cardboard is brown it's also full of dirt and will dull your scissors in one fell snip.

I have four or five different types of scissors here, why am I single? Is it because my wife took the fabric scissors with her when we split up? I need to get new ones...

I could have spared myself a lot of loneliness with that simple trick!

If you know how to sharpen them, it doesn't really matter that much. Stuff dulls eventually.

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Stuff does dull eventually but paper is inherently abrasive due to the minerals added for whiteness which causes it to dull scissors. Using fabric scissors on paper is a surefire way to have to sharpen them far sooner than you would otherwise have to.

I agree they'll dull faster. Fabric scissors are sharpened on a much lower angle, so if the metal doesn't have the sufficient hardness, they will not retain their edge for long.

I have expensive japanese knives, scissors, guillotine (no, not the historic french one) etc. I sharpen them myself every few months on whetstones. I'm not gonna overly worry about their usage because even at the rate at which I sharpen, they will likely last me a lifetime. Other people use my tools incorrectly often. I've seen my parents use Shun chef knife like a cleaver through fish & chicken bone. I'm sure it works very well. It's bad for the knife. But I just sharpen on my regular schedule and go on with my day instead of stressing about it.
