On this day in 1978, United Steelworkers union workers in Sudbury, Ontario voted to go on strike to fight proposed layoffs and pay cuts. The strike was the longest in Canadian history until the record was broken by Sudbury workers in 2009.

The layoffs and cuts to pay and benefits were at the multi-national company Inco, which cited low nickel prices as a justification.

According to filmmaker Martin Duckworth, workers voted to strike against the advice of the United Steelworkers hierarchy, and the strike enjoyed national support because Inco was a known polluter and one of the biggest multi-nationals in Canada.

Around 11,600 workers were involved in the strike, which affected the wages sustaining 43,000 people, or about 26% of the population of metropolitan Sudbury. By the end of the strike, nine months later, the company had been deprived of over twenty-two million hours of labor.

The workers won small wage increase and a pension package, however thousands of workers lost their homes and cars because of the length of the strike. According to journalist Amy Miller, since 1979, INCO has fired 20,000 employees from their staff and now have more people receiving payments from the pension roll than pay roll.

The role of women in the community during the strike was profiled in the 1980 documentary film A Wives' Tale (Une histoire de femmes).

Here's an idea, it's called the Satire Quiz. You're shown random political cartoons and Tweets and you have to determine whether it's supposed to be a joke or if it's earnest.

Nothing is more infuriating than pausing a video and then going to sleep only to wake up and find the pause didn't actually take so the video ran through and you've got no clue where you actually left oft

Man every time I wake up and go to xitter there's a new miniature food discourse on there, this time I literally dont even know what the fuck is going on, some american I follow is trying to dunk on comically wide and flat german schnitzels but that should literally be like american appealing, its breaded and fried meat idk what the problem is.

Idk if its offensive to the american brain that its comically thin rather than comically thick or something.

Dunno if this is an intentional point but I love how in Gundam Zeta the issue of child soldiers has gone from a moral one that gets swiftly brushed aside to just 100% a matter of practicality like "damn, all our child soldier prodigys need father figures and we didn't teach any of that in officer school, this is tough."

12th century vaush be like: Tankies deny atrocities being committed against Christians in the holy land, and say it's all a bizarre conspiracy theory made up by the Byzantine emperor to retake his lost territory. The REAL leftist position is to send our excess grain to the lord's armies so that we may retake Jerusalem for Christendom

I think the optometrist I went to has a broken messaging system, because it has now been 3 weeks since I ordered glasses from them, so I am going to go there today and shrimply ask if they have arrived yet.

I don't think this lemmy poster intended for the comments to be full of people dreaming of how they would contribute to a commune lol

the post is by a lemmy.world user so hexbear can't see it

As someone whose only coding experience was customizing her MySpace profile like 20 years ago now, scripting interactions between NPCs at big moments in my New Vegas mod has been the most frustrating part of the whole thing 😠

Watching Fionna and Cake and Im really loving it lol. Idk how they keep doing it but the adventure time folks really keep making banger after banger.

The only bad part so far has been that they recast Prismo, which was apparently the fault of Kumail's agent telling them no, even though he really loves Prismo, so they fucked up bad lmao. The new guy doing his voice does a decent job but it's just not the same.

80 percent sure the cute girl at the bougie overpriced deli near my job I go to sometimes was flirting with me today and holy shit this is the exact confidence boost i needed rn lmfao. got a name but nothing more than that. gotta tread cautiously since someone being on the clock can very easily be in harassment territory if you're not delicate and respectful about shit (very much worth noting that I was just chilling and she's the one who struck up the convo with me so I think I'm in the clear for now)

The first union in the state for dispensaries popped up the other day. Honestly surprised Teamsters picked them up with federal laws, I'd expect feds to destroy weed unions with federal enforcement. Banks won't even take dispo money right now.

Making employers go fuckin crazy though :/ my girlfriend works in weed and I'm pretty sure they're trying to fire people who hang out with each other outside of work there.
