[-] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

it looks like if raincoats were hijabs...

Who are they trying to appeal to with this, are they launching a vatican sponsored cocomelon clone?

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 3 points 58 minutes ago

I can't be sure this was the primary use-case that the AI inventors envisioned, but it's hard to argue that it's not successful at this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"for every character there is a gender swapped version of that character"

[-] kyle@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

If a male version of a character exists, there's a female version that someone has made.

Idk what it has to do with the Catholic Waifu though.

Numbers are down, release the waifu! Common business strategy with ancient roots.

Samsung Sam corporate comic

I'd say the mascot is clearly a child, but the Catholic Church...

Something something "the power of god and anime on my side"

[-] Leate_Wonceslace@lemmy.dbzer0.com 36 points 6 hours ago

Yes; "Luce" is Italian for "Light' and "Lucifer" is Latin for "light bearer". They are cognates.

[-] Rolando@lemmy.world 15 points 5 hours ago

So whoever carries that anime figure is literally Luciferian.

[-] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 hours ago

I thought they spoke Latin in the Vatican, aren't they Latino? Otherwise how do we get such classical Christian idioms like "Romanes eunt domus"?

[-] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 hours ago

Italian is a direct descendant of Latin (along with nearly every other Western language)

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

There's Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese...there are more Germanic-derived ones than Latin-derived, aren't there?

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 hour ago

Romanian, Catalan, Sicilian, Galician, Venetian, probably a number of other dialects, are also Latin descendants.

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I'd have to get a list of every country considered "western" and then figure out how many have predominantly Latin-derived and Germanic-derived languages. Too much work. "Nearly every" one of them would most certainly not be Latin-derived, though.

[-] Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 hour ago

Thankfully there’s an entire field of linguistics that’s already done the work. Quick Google search shows 22 Latin descendant languages, and 24 Germanic descendant languages. So slightly more, yeah.

[-] samus12345@lemmy.world 1 points 56 minutes ago

Thanks, my google-fu wasn't up to the task. That's about what I was expecting.

[-] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 8 points 8 hours ago

Yeah, that was my reaction as well. It's so onion flavored I can't believe it.

[-] Mango@lemmy.world 22 points 8 hours ago

Finally the Catholics have discovered religion!

[-] AceQuorthon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 9 hours ago

Luce will also represent the Holy See at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.

I love this sentence so much.

[-] loopy@lemm.ee 29 points 10 hours ago

This is the onion-ness we all deserve

[-] XMRFrbgNBwQC6Hkd@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

[-] CptEnder@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

That priest looks stoked

[-] StrangeName@feddit.org 160 points 18 hours ago

Missed the chance to call her Vati-chan.

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 49 points 17 hours ago

Oh damn, in German, "Vati" is an affectionate form like "daddy", except it's the word stem of "father" ("Vater").

And wouldn't you know it, Christians also use "Vater" to refer to priests, the pope and their god.

[-] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 10 hours ago

Yes, the US largely figured that out with The Empire Strikes Back. 😜

[-] ArgentRaven@lemmy.world 41 points 16 hours ago

So they choose Luce, so close to Lucifer, and they expect the Internet to NOT bring it up? There's Lucy, Daughter of the Devil on Cartoon Network for shit's sake.

Nevermind the connections to Death Note, a far more popular anime about Light Yagami, and the subtle connections between his name and Lucifer the Lightbringer.

This seems so much worse on it's face, even if you leave out the undertones of children's abuse by the church and Rule 34 that will come out (which are worse, but the church keeps trying to bury it)

[-] sudneo@lemm.ee 18 points 11 hours ago

I know nothing about anime, but I guess it is not that bad? Luce is straight up "light" in Italian, and Lucifer just means "the one who brings light" because it's the Angel's name, before the fall according to the fairytale. So from their POV it should all make sense.
