There is a separate thunderbird app from k-9 now, so apparently not just an update. Obnoxious though that the new app lists a bunch of collected data types while k-9 doesn't list any. Maybe just a legacy thing since K-9 has been around forever and they didn't list them originally, but still upsetting for the privacy minded.

Not gonna lie, I was super confused why F-Droid was updating thunderbird beta on my device when I was updating apps a few days ago. Took me a while to realize k9 was apparently changed to thunderbird beta.

Apparently that is only a metadata issue that should be fixed soon(TM). The installed app is still k9 https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/issues/8478

Oh... Well, too late for me. Ended up uninstalling it and replacing it with thunderbird because I thought they were rebranding it to thunderbird beta.

The two apps are identical and built from the same codebase anyway. K-9 is just a branding asset swap.

I've seen conflicting info from Thunderbird devs on how long they actually intend to keep both branding packages active. I've heard no longer than a year. I've heard only as long as it takes to get Thunderbird out of beta. I've heard they have some sort of agreement with FDroid that obligates them to keep it listed for some minimum duration of time (???). I've most recently heard indefinitely, because their build script is just a toggle now and it costs them nothing. Which one do I believe? I have no idea. I doubt K-9 will be kept around in perpetuity, though.

that's annoying, I hate the new client, thanks for the heads up

According to someone else who replied to my comment, it seems it's some sort of metadata issue rather than an actual rebrand. I'm just an idiot who doesn't actually look deep enough into this kinda stuff.

in any case, if its updating the old app to the new one that is still massively annoying. the new UI is nearly unusable for me since I usually use apps with one hand.

[-] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

I'm not having any issues using it with one hand so far. Not even sure what is very different about the UI beyond a different icon set and the account switcher being fewer taps to get to. I'm curious what about the new app makes it hard for you? Maybe there's something highly annoying that I haven't run across yet.

I can no longer switch users since my hands can't reach that far and I no longer have the dexterity to play phone balancing due to my RSI. I have a LG G7 thinq with lineage, I have the button that was used for AI assistance set to click the top left corner since that's fairly ubiquitous.

That opens the right side tray. I can reach all of the stuff with one hand like this. I can no longer do this with the thunder bird UI.

[-] lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Ah yeah that sounds really frustrating. I'm sure you've tried this already, but does Lineage have support for the one-handed mode gesture? I've had that come in handy (no pun intended) now and then.

I read somewhere that the Thunderbird team was working on fixes for the new drawer UI, here's hoping they take better accessibility in mind!

I do occasionally use the one-handed stuff but unfortunately my RSI means I have poor hand-eye coordination in general which means it's also just really hard to use it like that anyways.

I'll go ahead and leave some feedback. I didn't know they were planning on reworking again.

I only have two accounts, but I can toggle between them by tapping the account name once the menu is open. That may also cycle through multiple accounts if you can reach that more comfortably.

[-] drwankingstein@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

it is possible to use that worst case scenario, but that would be via double tap on button, and I have 8 accounts I need to monitor so that is still quite unergonomic

[-] pr06lefs@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 days ago

pulled in my K9 settings and good to go, seems like.

Does TB no longer partner with gandi or Mailfence? It used to be that when you did a new install of TB, it would provide links on how to get a new email address with one or both of them. Since TB Android looks to be basically just K9 Mail (?), I'm assuming there's no calendar or calendar sync function?

[-] _edge@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 3 days ago

Thunderbird android is k9 mail

[-] makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago

Haven't they added telemetry and all that? Shame if so.

I like k9. Let's see if this improves it, or not.

it's on by default in beta, off in stable.
