MODERATORS

Summary

Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego has won the Arizona Senate race, becoming the state’s first Latino senator and defeating far-right candidate Kari Lake.

Gallego will replace Kyrsten Sinema, a former Democrat turned independent who did not seek re-election.

Gallego’s lead in fundraising and consistent polling advantage helped secure his 50% to 48% victory. Lake struggled to attract moderate Republicans and independents, partly due to her past criticisms of John McCain.

This win gives Republicans a 52-47 Senate majority, as Democrats lost seats in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Montana.

I just want to say one last "Fuck you Kyrsten Sinema, you traitorous piece of shit."

It's because she sucked too much.

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 48 points 3 days ago

It's always fun to see Kari Lake get beat

I love the logic of electing their first Latino senator at the same time as a president to boot him out of the country

The American electorate is nothing if not incoherent.

It's really weird how much ticket splitting there's been in those battleground states. Harris lost them, but the state wide races generally went well for the Dems.

Who's this Trump-Gallego voter?

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Disillusionment campaigns worked. Same as in 2016 with the Bernie bros refusing to back Clinton.

Just needed enough noise about reasons NOT to vote for Kamala. And people would still vote the rest of the ticket, but not for her. Because we all forgot about the importance of strategic voting in FPTP.

I love how the Democratic party has no responsibility for losing the election. Harris followed the same playbook as Clinton: tack to the right, wag your finger at the left and campaign in Texas.

They're still trying to chase those 'moderate' Republicans instead of turning out their base.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah I agree, they seriously need to rethink their strategy. I’m not absolving the party.

But voters abandoning the dems because they aren’t left enough still shot themselves in the foot.

The left falls in love, the right falls in line.

She is such a twat

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 11 points 3 days ago

Oh no! Kari Lake had another election stolen from her... she'd better lawyer up for a few more years and have her case go nowhere.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 82 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It still helps. You don't want Kari Lake around.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Like I said to FuglyDuck, Trump is going to appoint her to his cabinet. He really loves her.

[–] billiam0202@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

I'm guessing Hope Hicks isn't interested in being his "pants steamer" for a second time?

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I dunno.

it seems to me keeping Kari Lake out of elected office- any elected office is a good thing.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Maybe, but I guarantee you Trump will appoint her to his cabinet.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Id much have her in a position where she will inevitablely fuck up and be fired (his turnover ratio is insane for a Stable Genius) over a 6 year appointment.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's a good point, although they don't all fuck up and get fired.

On the other hand, a cabinet-level position has far more power than a single senator.

[–] Furball@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

They don’t all fuck up but this one is fucking Kari lake. It’s all but guaranteed

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

somebody has to protect the puppies.... right?

(Honestly, i bet i depends if she gives him a blowjob or not. Yeah. i'm throwing up a little just writing that. Only advice i have is... don't. Also. if you're dealing overpoweringly awful smells; including rancid shit. Get some tiger balm, and lather that on your upper lip, just below your nose.) (don't tell people that work with trump. they deserve that torture.)

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

If she hasn't already, considering how much he slobbers over her all the time, I'd be surprised.

How many Scaramuccis do you think she'll last?

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Every senate/house seat the Democrata win makes it all the harder for Republicans to pass any significant legislation.

Just look at what happened with both Trump and Biden. Slim majorities in both house and senate led to a lot of legislation getting killed. Just recall how long it took the house to pick a speaker, while Republicans may have a majority it doesn't mean they can weild it.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

When you have a majority and they all toe the line, it doesn't make it harder.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It also helps Ruben Gallego continue to move up in his political career.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Bold of you to think any Democrat will have a legitimate political career anymore.
