Summary

Oregon confirmed its first human case of avian influenza, linked to a poultry operation in Clackamas County.

The H5N1 strain has infected millions of birds and other animals, but poses a low risk to the public with mild symptoms and no evidence of person-to-person transmission

Oh great...just in time for Trump and RFK Jr. to take over. I'm sure any major developments will be handled seriously and not be politicized at all.

On the plus side, COVID drastically cut our carbon emissions for a year or two.

Imagine what bird flu would accomplish.

[–] Fester@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That was because of mitigation efforts also mitigated emissions.

2020: Please stay home and stop the spread of COVID-19.

2028: Please report to your local mandatory bird flu super spreader rally or be subject to a daily fine of 250 TrumpBux or 3,000,000 USD or 2 dozen eggs.

The early COVID pandemic response was largely voluntary, as people bunkered down out of terror. I knew a few people who caught the disease early on, during an international flight, and they were stuck overseas for months simply because the US didn't want to let them back in.

And the death toll for COVID wasn't anywhere near the potential of an avian flu. We're talking high double digits - 50% of the historical sampling holds. People only get to go to the super spreader rally once before they either get smart or stop mattering. And Trump's a fucking hypochondriac, ffs. The anti-ax shit was far more a consequence of corporate media trying to bully people back to work than anything Trump personally believed. That's half the joke of the #NeverTrump movement. Most of the shit they hated about Trump was the silver-lining break from neoconservative dogma.

Look on the positive side, a large portion of the population dying of bird flu will also significantly reduce emissions.

Ah yes, trotting out the "mild" narrative to incept it into the public mindset before it before H5 becomes the next "once in a century" pandemic in... the same century.

Pay no attention to the very first case in Canada, a previously healthy teenager with no comorbidities, who's now hospitalized in critical condition. I'm sure it's just astoundingly bad luck, nothing to see here.

The first big leap is from animal to human. The next transmission is the one we should really be concerned with, the transmission from human to human.

Well, the kid in Canada ain't doing to hot. So while this dude might have mild symptoms, that's not guaranteed to stay the same.

Nice. 2020 Part Deux: The Revengening is gonna slap.

Aww shit, here we go again.

While the virus is typically fatal in poultry, it is usually mild for humans. Symptoms include fever, chills, eye redness and respiratory sickness, like cough and sore throat.

In a statement, Clackamas County Public Health Officer Sarah Present said they’ve been “closely monitoring people exposed to the animal outbreak, which is how this case was identified. The individual experienced only mild illness and has fully recovered.”

Health officials say the risk to the public is low, and there is “no evidence of person-to-person transmission.”

How do you get H5N1? It's not airborne, don't worry. Just walk slowly 6ft behind other people. I keep repeating this because it's true.

It's not like you're going to be going to Walmart to actually purchase a perfect vessel for transferring viruses and or bacteria from the origin of the infection thru the sick chicken's ass to your own mouth. Cooking 🍳 it will definitely fix eeeverything!
