Registered in 2018 for reasons I can't remember but didn't do much. Then about 2 weeks ago someone told me about StreetComplete and I haven't been able to stop contributing since.

Are there other such good apps that can assist in contributing to OSM?

[-] une_abeille@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

StreetComplete is by far the most accessible way to get into OSM, in my opinion. It's like a gateway drug, because eventually you find something missing that you can't add with StreetComplete and then you begrudgingly open iD on your computer, find out how easy it is, and the rest is history.

Are these the organization members? or was this just a meetup of OSM enthusiasts?

[-] amapanda@en.osm.town 5 points 1 year ago

@Synnr looks like photos from State of the Map conferences.

Thanks. So likely also a lot of people that just like and use the app/idea/whatever; not people who directly contribute to it? I'm just curious because I tried to use it to replace Waze a couple years back and it was pretty buggy. I'm curious if they brought more people on... to be honest I don't even know enough about it but I assume it's a non-profit organization. or is it just FOSS?

@Synnr The amount of people who have contributed to OpenStreetMap, to the map data, is massive. More than >2,000,000 people, and about 50,000 people edit the map every month.

Which app did you try? OSM is a little decentralised, so there are many.

[-] Synnr@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

I don't recall. What would you recommend now for someone used to Waze?

[-] amapanda@en.osm.town 3 points 1 year ago

@Synnr I haven't used Waze. But @organicmaps is great

@Synnr @amapanda

Magic Earth has quite a clean interface and traffic data if you have an internet connection.

Closed source, but uses OSM data.

Saving this so I can download in a bit, thanks.

I use OsmAnd+ for off-road travel navigation. The amount of trails and accuracy of navigation is so good!

[-] oKtosiTe@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Organic Maps is really underrated IMHO. I use it a lot for walking around town as well as on hikes.

[-] Voyager@psychedelia.ink 3 points 1 year ago

To err is human. Try to notice missing points of interest and add notes for things you'd like to have added to the map.

[-] Voyager@psychedelia.ink 6 points 1 year ago

FYI: OsmAnd+ has the ability to record GPX tracks and upload them to OSM. This is incredibly useful for creating accurate maps and add just satellite imagery offsets. As a mapper, it would really if a hiking trail has some GPS data so that the nodes can be aligned and improve the accuracy of the map.

Thanks for this information.

I'm familiar with the GPX recording feature.

How can I upload them to OSM? I didn't see that info in the link you provided.

[-] variaatio@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You can use another OsmAnd plugin OSM-editing to do that. It's in-built, but you do need to activate it. https://www.osmand.net/docs/user/plugins/osm-editing#upload-gps-track

Also you could share the track internally in the phone OS to file browser to save it as named file on the phone memory. https://www.osmand.net/docs/user/personal/tracks/#export-track. Then upload it via osm website. https://www.openstreetmap.org/traces has generic upload gps track feature.

[-] speaker_hat@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind
