“My colleagues can no longer deny that this is genocide,” said Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan). “We must follow our own U.S. laws. We need an Arms Embargo now.”

On Thursday, Amnesty released a sprawling report determining that Israel’s assault of Gaza amounts to genocide, citing Israel’s relentless attacks, blocking of humanitarian aid, targeting of health and other basic infrastructure, forced displacement of 90 percent of Gaza’s population, and more.

Amnesty is the first major international humanitarian organization to outright label Israel’s actions as a genocide. The group was also one of the first major human rights organizations to label Israel’s violent occupation and oppression of Palestine as apartheid, back in 2022.

The human rights group, one of the largest in the world, specifically called out the U.S. as a major collaborator in the genocide due to the Biden administration’s policy of sending Israel weapons with zero red lines. Just last week, despite Israel’s clear, ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza, reports emerged of the Biden administration advancing yet another sale of weapons to Israel worth $680 million.

I doubt Congress will stop denying. Four months ago Congress gave Netanyahu a record-breaking 58 standing ovations in the span of ~53 minutes. This is business as usual for US empire[1], it’s just usually easier to conceal.

Remembering that time four months ago when CONgress gave #Netanyahu a record-breaking fifty eight standing ovations in the span of fifty three minutes or so, now that almost all International watchdog agencies, even #AmnestyInternational, friendly to western governments, agree they were applauding @israel #genocide in #Gaza @palestine.

Just because the truth falls on deaf ears doesn't mean you don't still speak it. Keep fighting Rashida Tlaib!

EDIT: to clarify:

Keep fighting, Rashida Tlaib!

Keep fighting Rashida Tlaib!

Did you mean

Keep fighting, Rashida Tlaib!

or did I misread the context?

[–] z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Lol. Definitely the second. Thanks. Editing now.

I was shocked to find out how antisemetic Amnesty International has become recently. Or will be. I'm sure someone will say it any day now.

How convenient they waited until Congress was firmly in control under both houses of the Republicans and a Republican presidential administration so cutting off funding now would last for all of a month and the zionists conveniently arranged a ceasefire anyways so they can wait.

If they'd said this 2-3 months ago while the election was still on and the funds and weapons still being delivered maybe it would have had some impact. But now they can pretend to care and conveniently all the culpability and blame from Democrats can be moved to Republicans.

Of course I have zero doubt that Democrats will refuse to take even token action for the 1 month they have left of power. They must display nothing but utmost fealty and loyalty to the project of israel. And I'm sure they're elated that it will be in the end a Republican, not Democrat congress that passes draconian laws cracking down on anti-israel protest and pro-palestinian movements so they can in a few years claim it wasn't them, bamboozle the masses with talk of being progressive and how that was then, this is now, etc, etc.
