Season Wrap-up
Did anything surprise you?
I wasn't planning on picking this series up because Too Many Losing Heroines is the antithesis of Zero Losing Heroines. But then I saw the endorsement given by Shinkai Makoto and decided to give it a shot.
And it became my dark horse of the season. It's real good, and it certainly resembles Shinkai's works. In fact, I won't be surprised if some of the staff working on it used to work for Shinkai.
The humor, the art style, the characters and the story were all superb. It is now one of my potential top favorites.
disappoint you?
I thought it would be absurdly funny. I ended up absurdly bored. Dropped early-mid way through.
Rest of the shows
Completed / will be completing
Terminator 0 - Very good. It raised my expectation of adaptations of mainstream / non-anime shows. Looking forward to the Lord of the Rings anime now.
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - Would likely have dropped if not for its episodes being only 12 minutes long, ending before I get bored of it. More anime should learn from this IMO. It does have its entertaining moments, but that's it. Upon completion, my rating for the Magical Girls theme on AniList would drop from 100%.
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian - It should have kept comedy as its focus instead of drama. I was really close to dropping it, but ended up completing it because there's only 1-2 episodes left (and even then, I fast-forwarded through some scenes). I would likely not pick up the second season.
Dropped early / mid
No Longer Allowed in Another World - I don't vibe with this MC.
My Wife Has No Emotion - MC is wimpier than I remembered.
Quality Assurance in Another World - I don't vibe with this MC.
Rick and Morty: The Anime - I don't have the patience for the pay-off / reveal, and the earlier parts are not entertaining enough.
Dropped later / towards the end
Pseudo Harem - Got bored.
Senpai is an Otokonoko - Got bored.
From earlier seasons
A Place Further Than the Universe - It's ok. Not too entertaining, but just enough for me to not be bored. 7 / 10
Final Thoughts
A rather laid-back season for me, which is good. It gave me time to finally watch some all-time popular shows, such as:
~~OpenAI~~ CloseAI
Is **ODDTAXI** underrated?
IMO it is rated.
It's got a good rating, which it deserves. Perhaps it is underwatched though.
Based on the difference between average score and my rating on AniList, some of my favourite underrated anime of 2020s are (sorted from largest to smallest delta):
number | title | year | average score | my rating | delta |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Cells at Work!! Season 2 | 2021 | 7.2 | 10 | 2.8 |
2 | BELLE | 2021 | 7.3 | 10 | 2.7 |
3 | BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. | 2020 | 7.4 | 10 | 2.6 |
4 | Gushing Over Magical Girls | 2024 | 7.4 | 10 | 2.6 |
5 | Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! | 2024 | 7.4 | 10 | 2.6 |
6 | The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You | 2023 | 7.7 | 10 | 2.3 |
7 | Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 1 | 2022 | 7.8 | 10 | 2.2 |
8 | Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2 | 2023 | 7.8 | 10 | 2.2 |
9 | The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2 | 2022 | 7.8 | 10 | 2.2 |
10 | TERMINATOR ZERO | 2024 | 7.1 | 9 | 1.9 |
From what I observed, the higher the rating for a show, the more likely I am to like it (and give it a high score)
Not sure how to take popularity into account. How do we judge if a show is underwatched anyway?
It's a pretty fun whodunnit.
There's one aspect - that's critical to the whole story - that annoys me though, enough for me to consider dropping it.
I'm planning to watch the following TV series:
High Expectation
i.e. most likely watch to completion
Decent Expectation
i.e. good chance of watching to the end, depending on how it goes
Low Expectation
i.e. probably drop after a few episodes, but there may be a few surprises
Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions - season 2
Completed / caught up to two shows that entered my top favorites:
Lycoris Recoil
Take the reflexes of Spiderman, the moral compass of Batman / Kira Yamato and the pistol-handling skills of John Wick, put them in a cute, happy-go-lucky girl in a setting similar to Minority Report, and you'd get Chisato.
She embodied so many of my favorite characters for the right reason, making me come to like her right away.
Beyond the MC, I found many more resemblances to my other favorites.
Majima is pretty much a one-man Celestial Being, though he played the antagonist here. I can see him joining force with Chisato in a sequel.
The politics, as well as the manipulation of children into fighting / murdering others by adults is just like most Gundam series.
In fact, it passed a number of my lax criteria for being a Gundam show, so I'm just going to consider it one. (As of current writing, it is top six on AniList's anime recommendation after watching Gundam: Witch from Mercury
I hope it gets a sequel. The anime left multiple plotlines unresolved (intentionally, it seems): Majima survived, the authorities are still in charge and LilyBell was set-up to be the next antagonist.
Speaking of LilyBell, I'm glad they exist. Some shows would just handwave away the fact that the entire cast is girls (or in some cases, guys) when there is no good reason for it to be so.
Anyway, it is a 10 / 10 for me.
Oshi no Ko
I've been putting off watching this one, because I know that I would get emotionally invested and binge the whole show. I finally decided to bite the bullet and lost some sleep along the way; totally worth it.
As others pointed out, the first episode is essentially a movie and was so impactful - so much so that I caved in and gave it a 10 / 10 from the outset (which I rarely do).
The story, the drama, the plot twists and characters are all so well-written. Between this and Kaguya-sama, Akasaka Aka is a genius. And being meta, we have the anime studio and the rest of the team to thank for bringing this story to life.
I was no stranger to the opening and ending songs (Idol and Mephisto) of Oshi no Ko even before watching it, but watching it gave me the context to appreciate the lyrics. These two songs are now part of my playlists. I don't find season 2's songs as memorable though.
Thanks to my binge, I'm all caught-up, in time to catch the last episode of this season with everyone else. It also meant that Makeine got dethroned as my top anime of the season at the last minute.
My only regret is that I started watching it before the source material is complete, which means I'm unable to binge the manga to completion.
