It ultimately is religious belief.
Religious people believe the soul enters the body at conception, granting personhood, so abortion is murder. They also believe that people put to death will go before God, where they will be judged as evil and sent to Hell for eternal punishment.
Everything else is just window dressing.

Yeah, I think the movie went a bit hard into making the entire first half of the movie about that arc, and then pulled the rug out when you expect it to be the climax.
The book is a bit more muted: that arc is just one of several that Roz experiences and has much less fanfare, making it more clear that the story is about Roz’s entire journey on the island and not just that one specific relationship.
