The whole comic is actually Ai but the characters, especially Victor, are derivative of traditional sketches and character art. I essentially establish the composition with Ai then superimpose my own style on top of it.

Haha okay this reminds of a time my partner was irritating with one specific bird at the... Are you spying on us OP?! This is like verbatim lol.

12k ain't that much. I run a sub of 75k and they only amass two or three posts a day max unless something happens. Just post your OC if it bothers you.

I do too hope the strikes are successful. That said, you've likely already been consuming generative technology for some time now. Disney alone has nearly a decade of research into it already. Advanced VFX applications use all sorts of generative tech too. When I was working in LA we referenced public data all the time. I know it's gotten a huge spotlight on it given private AI capitalizing/evangelizing it all but the very real threat of digital scabs taking people's jobs needs the biggest spotlight right now. I do think the tables will turn if nothing good can come out of Hollywood and those artists begin weaponizing that same tech against the execs. I see what studios are doing as no different than impersonation & identity theft by using this tech to limit working hours to skirt union protections.

Gonna offer my two cents as someone who entered the industry during the last writer's strike. You'll see some interesting creative divergence as said creatives crave expression and reach out to new venues like YouTube for the first time. It was one of many changes to the industry at that (and now this) time. I use generative tech because it's part of this exploration of the taboo. Back then, YouTube was the taboo because it was effectively working for free and with no insurance or protection by comparison to a stable studio gig. Take away the studio gig, anything and everything could be opportunity for change and especially so the longer this goes on tbf.

I am a former VFX artist for a few [adultswim] shows who's been using AI since Thanksgiving '21 and Midjourney since the beta release as well as open source alternatives like Stable Diffusion. You can read the comic in full here: https://www.victorgnarly.com/stories/project-four-l3zw3-sl66r

I'm a former VFX artist for Robot Chicken and a few other [adultswim] shows. These are a few of my initial thoughts on AI imagery after 1 year in the can. Excuse my vtubers model, as I'm not fully condemning AI I've had to hide my identity a bit after some nasty was thrown my way online. Won't stop me from making content though. Take care!

Now before y'all throw pitchforks at me for a number of simplifications I made here, I did so with intent so let me break them down real quick.

  1. Threads is not yet federated. The whole discussion of should or shouldn't we federate with the zucks is not the subject of this piece. Rather, it's that many of us came to Lemmy to escape much of what is on commercial social media in the first place. I found this post ironic in that sense which is why I made it.

  2. Digital pollution is a catch all for data pollution, generative spam, devaluation of digital media, link rot, algorithmic monotony and climate change caused by mining + generative tech. I really didn't want to get into the nitty gritty of the internet's zombification with this comic so that's the phrase I went with.

  3. Antithetical is a bit extreme of a statement but I do not believe that you can have artificial scarcity if generative tech exists. There will inevitably be a few cryptobros that really hate this take but oh well.

  4. I am unapologetic about my use of Ai because most of my comics are about Ai's impact on entertainment. Although I am relatively sure this crowd isn't as offended as the art communities, I had a career in Hollywood VFX before my current job as a creative consultant. And I'm old enough that Ai feels like deja vu to the emergence of digital art and then 3D which ended my first career in stopmotion effects. In short, been there done that!

Thanks for reading. More of my stuff is available at GnarlyComics.com
