I also struggle with this often as a 'Merican expat living in another country, hopefully permanently. Occasionally I wanna catch up on US shit but most of the time I care more about what's going on in Europe and other places so I couldn't care less about the perpetually stupid shit happening back in the US.

I'm still learning the language where I moved to so English news resources that are about other places can be very valuable to me. My main resource (and advice to others with this issue) is using an RSS reader with good sources you find along the way. Not every site has RSS these days but many do. I fill in the blanks with podcasts and stories in the language of my country. Only downside is no discussion unless you post on Lemmy or other social media, but maybe that can become a thing we do. :)

Yeah that's the unfortunate side. Given the situation it makes way more financial sense for the consumer to take the plane ticket unless they enjoy the novelty of a long train journey.

Also had a situation recently where just a 1.5 hour train trip became 6 hours due to it breaking down in a town with few bus stops and no other trains, probably due to summer tourism. It would be nice if the rail infrastructure were even further expanded and tickets made cheaper to make it more competitive.

Don't wanna be that guy but this article is a tad bit misleading. 13 euros for a plane ticket is an anomaly and probably due to governments funding airlines to encourage tourism to their countries.

That said, a couple hours on a rickety Ryanair for <13 euros beats buying a bunch of train tickets and the stress involved. Downside is missing out on getting to stop in some cool places and see some pretty sights with comfy leg room. (Also trains are more efficient due to the amount of people boarding)

Also editing your hosts file (rooted, android), using an adblock vpn (nonroot, android/iOS) or filtering your DNS (iOS, non jailbroken) kills basically all mobile ads. Alternatively use a Pihole on your network.

I'd recommend setting one's own browser to automatically redirect to old.reddit.com for the occasion they might need to find that rare technical solution/see sum tiddies.

It's guaranteed that they'll use their instance to datamine and further build profiles on people in other federated instances as well.

I don't trust them at all with their handling of data besides their ability to track people who aren't even on their platforms. Also it's almost impossible to reach out to them unless you buy their shitty VR headset, as you will find out if someone ever fraudulently takes your account to buy ads with your money and gets your FB account banned.

Fuck the Zuck.
