isn’t the subscriber count badge useless now since Lemmy fixed their reporting of that?

You're not wrong but "fixed" is a subjective term in this case. Two of the largest instances, https://lemmy.world and https://sh.itjust.works, have yet to "upgrade" past 0.19.3, like many other instances that prefer not to be on the cutting-edge. Nevertheless, the linked shield.io badges may also give other information and not strictly the soon-to-be-redundant "total subscribers" badge.

Ask your admin to turn it off

Thanks, I believe that's exactly what he did.

Is turning off DRM not an option for you? It is for me. That option has been there since the DRM inclusion right there in the Preferences, no about:config baloney. Now if the option wasn't included, I'd think I'd be more inclined to agree.

Points subtracted for presenting DRM as the unnecessarily unsavory and dramatic "kitten-meat deli."

Over at !music@midwest.social we've got a sidebar with a "total subscribers" shields.io badge, like many other communities all over the Lemmyverse do. I made a simple, non-badge-related edit to the sidebar and due to what seems an aggressive image proxy, the shields.io badge address gets mangled after the edit is saved.

This is !music

This is "Community Info" from !music@midwest.social on Jerboa. At the bottom of the screen is the midwest.social/api/v3/image_proxy image.

This is !detroit

This is "Community Info" from !detroit@midwest.social on Jerboa, as an example of a working badge. At the bottom the screen is the working shields.io badge.

The pre-save preview shows everything as should be. It's only when the edit is saved does the badge address get mangled.

I contacted our fearless leader, @seahorse@midwest.social, and he changed an image proxy setting. Now !music@midwest.social works as it should. Any further details or information in regards should be asked of him. Thanks.

More insanity that is 21^st^ Century American Life…

[Texas resident Lauren] Miller […] testified Wednesday before a U.S. Senate panel about the struggles she faced after learning in 2022 one of the twins’ brains wasn’t developing correctly and was about half fluid.

The fear was complicated by Texas’ strict restrictions on abortion, which forced Miller to seek out treatment options without her doctors’ assistance.

Miller testified that, thankfully, she had a longtime friend she could trust who was an OB-GYN [in Colorado], who understood the landscape of abortion laws and knew doctors who could help address her diagnosis.

Miller said the best option for her and her family was to have a single fetal reduction, but that was technically an abortion and she couldn’t get it in Texas. […] “We didn’t tell anybody what had happened,” Miller said Wednesday. “We didn’t tell anybody what we had done because we were so scared.”

Between bump stocks, mass shootings and anti-choice proponents, the American Right apparently prefers abortions after birth. Some of our State Representatives think Mrs Miller's plight is wrong as “God doesn’t make mistakes.”

A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything.

Some days, those who would ~~command~~ ~~govern~~ represent us just make it too easy for, among other things, finding "post fodder."

In the shadow of Michael William Nash's demonstration of his 2^nd^ Amendment rights on Saturday, according to The News

Twelve Michigan House Republicans have sponsored a bill this month to the name the AR-15 "the official rifle of this state," drawing criticism from opponents who labeled the proposal unserious and inappropriate.

For those who don't know, the AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle. Bear that in mind when reading the following.

State Rep. Brian BeGole, R-Antrim Township, a former Shiawassee County sheriff, was the primary backer of the AR-15 measure and said in a statement issued Tuesday that thousands of people in Michigan own an AR-15. […] “This distinction recognizes these law-abiding gun owners who are often vilified just for having a firearm as a hobbyist or to keep their homes and families safe," BeGole said.

That's some hobby. Keep their homes and families safe. Safe from the government BeGole has represented most of his life, according to the oft-debated 2^nd^ Amendment.

However, Ryan Bates, director of End Gun Violence Michigan, said BeGole's bill was about "worshiping the rifle that is the preferred weapon of mass shooters." […] Bates noted that on Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on bump stocks, a rapid-fire gun accessory that was used in a mass shooting at a music festival Las Vegas in 2017.

"That shooter used 23 AR-style rifles modified with bump stocks to kill 58 people and injure nearly 500 in mere minutes," Bates said. "We now live in a world where any deranged person can turn an AR-style rifle into a machine gun capable of firing 400-800 rounds per minute, a level of firepower that quite simply overwhelms law enforcement."

We all know that rabbit and pheasant can get pretty mean. And who doesn't like their venison pre-ground? To quote my favorite philosopher and thinker, myself

It’s forever High Noon in this nation of cowboys.

Ah, almost forgot! Use it everyday!

Here to add that, thanks to this jumping-bean bug, crossposting is difficult: once you confirm to which community to crosspost, focus is lost, the page jumps to the top and the post title and any URL are lost. Ouch!

@oleorun@real.lemmy.fan (or anybody, really), if you do file a bug report, would you mind posting the Github link? Thanks!

…or is the new web interface huge? I'm using Firefox 126 and I've reduced the page size to a bearable 90%.

More importantly though, please try this test in your browser of choice (I haven't tested from a dedicated app):

  1. create a post (for the sake of this test all you have to do is press the "Create a post" button in the sidebar) in any community
  2. Fill the body text field so you have enough text to for at least one press of 'PgDn'. I've supplied three paragraphs of dummy text you can copy for your convenience at the end of this post. Make sure the focus is still in the body text area (you should see the area highlighted with an outline.)
  3. switch to any other tab you have open.
  4. switch back to your post tab

You should see that the page has jumped back to the top. This also happens when you press 'Preview' with focus in the text area: the page jumps to the top and doesn't preview the post! In fact, any time the text box loses focus, the page jumps to the top. Merely clicking outside the text area will make the page jump to the top.

I hope I've clearly explained the situation.

Is this displayed in any browser or just Firefox? Any OS or just Linux. Is this a bug or am I the only one experiencing these glitches? Any help/corroboration would be appreciated. Lemmy: the Tupolev Tu-144 of social media!® Thanks.

HONG KONG (AP) — As the 35th anniversary of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square crackdown neared, Rowena He, a prominent scholar of that bloody chapter of modern China’s history, was busy flying between the United States, Britain and Canada to give a series of talks. Each was aimed at speaking out for those who cannot.

The 1989 crackdown, in which government troops opened fire on student-led pro-democracy protesters, resulting in hundreds, if not thousands, dead, remains a taboo subject in mainland China. In Hong Kong, once a beacon of commemorative freedom, the massive June 4 annual vigil that mourned the victims for decades has vanished, a casualty of the city’s clampdown on dissidents following huge anti-government protests in 2019.

Last week, under a new, home-grown security law, Hong Kong police arrested seven people on suspicion of alleged sedition over their posting of social media content about commemorating the Tiananmen crackdown. A Christian newspaper, which typically publishes content related to the event ahead of its anniversary, left its front page mostly blank. It said it could only turn words into blank squares and white space to respond to the current situation.

When either logged in at lemmy.ml or merely just visiting, I can't see the community !music@midwest.social, which does exist and is visible from (at least) midwest.social, lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works.

At the bottom of my posts (please see below Examples) there are three links to communities I'm involved in. From lemmy.ml clicking the first two links work correctly. !music@midwest.social doesn't.

When following a direct link to https://lemmy.ml/c/music@midwest.social it lands on an error page:

Error!

The server returned this error: couldnt_find_community. This may be useful for admins and developers to diagnose and fix the error

Refreshing the page multiple times, which usually resolves the problem on the first refresh, does nothing in this case.

Any insights? Thank you.

EDIT 2024-05-01, 19:33:20, CEST: after literally weeks and hundreds of tries (possibly thousands) https://lemmy.ml/c/music@midwest.social works. No longer do I see the error page. I theorize that previously I was the only one looking for that community on the lemmy.ml instance but maybe someone else saw this post, possibly @Nemo@midwest.social, and tried to browse !music@midwest.social, thus "propagating the federation"…?

Okay, this is the second post today that has "fraud" in its title…

The America Project, a national nonprofit that's been focused on railing against the country's voting system, spent $1.2 million funding lawyers and groups in Michigan during the 2022 election year, according to a recently filed tax document.

The Florida-based nonprofit co-founded by former Overstock.com CEO Patrick Byrne reported it gave $429,875 to the law office of Oakland County attorney Stefanie Lambert for "legal support." Lambert was charged with four felonies in August 2023 for allegedly participating in a scheme to improperly access voting machines used in the 2020 presidential election.

The America Project also said it provided $700,000 for a Waterford Township organization that's connected to Lambert and called "United States Election Investigation and Lawsuits." The money was for "election integrity," [emphasis mine -- r^2^ ] according to the nonprofit's tax filing, which didn't include additional details about the expenditure.

"Election integrity." You have to laugh.

The tax document also showed how funds have been used to ensure conspiracy theories about voter fraud persist, said Chris Thomas, Michigan's former longtime elections director. […] “Obviously, this is a glimpse into the post-2020 spending to keep their (election) deniers’ conspiracy alive," Thomas said.

Citizens of the State of Ohio,

Today there will be a solar eclipse, an astronomical event where the Moon will pass in front of the Sun. Yes, during the day. While in most of Ohio it will be a partial eclipse, in that the Moon will leave a small slice of the Sun visible, in some parts of Ohio the Moon will totally block the Sun.

The important thing to remember is DON'T PANIC. Things to remember while the solar eclipse is happening:

  • It is not a sign or an omen of any kind. Eclipses are a normal part of astronomical events and have no "hidden meaning" in themselves. The sky will not come crashing down nor are "the gods" displeased about anything.
  • The eclipse has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming Presidential election.
  • The ensuing darkness is not permanent. The solar eclipse will end after a short period of time.
    • There may also be a slight drop in temperature. This too is not permanent and will also pass. There is no need for Coleman lanterns, portable generators or any survival gear you may have on hand.
  • It is not a threat from any foreign agent. Unlike airborne chem trails, citizens can stay calm knowing that the Moon is an American territory.
  • As the effects from an eclipse are temporary, there is no need whatsoever for the following:
    • Human/animal sacrifice
    • Firearms, automatic or semi-automatic weapons, nor missile launchers, bazookas, grenades, or other military-grade weaponry you most certainly don't have stockpiled under Uncle Cletus' storm shelter. The Moon is too far away to hit, anyway.
    • Banging drums, setting off fireworks or any general noisemaking to "scare the Moon away"

All kidding aside, Ohioans…

An essential thing to remember is never look directly at an eclipse as it may cause serious and irrreparable damage to your eyes. If you're not already sick to death of hearing about this furshlugginer eclipse already, Wayne State University, here in Detroit, has a guide about viewing the eclipse today.

Scratch glass, turn blue, stay sick and remember, Parma spelled backwards is…

Love,

Apologies for the tardiness of this post. Capt. Harris passed away March 8, 2024 at the age of 89. Condolences to the surviving family.

In 1964, David Harris broke the color barrier in commercial aviation when he was hired by American Airlines. Harris joined the company after serving as a captain in the U.S. Air Force flying B-52 bombers.

"It's the greatest job in the world. I flew and flew and flew and was ready to fly more in my life," Harris told NPR in 2022. "I would have done it another 30 years had I not grown old."

Harris first got hooked on airplanes as a kid growing up in Columbus, Ohio. He and his brother would visit Lockbourne Air Force Base where the decorated Tuskegee Airmen were stationed after World War II.

His life was the subject of the middle-grade book, Segregated Skies: David Harris's Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers by Michael Cottman.

Capt. Harris, the first African-American commercial airline pilot in 1964…it's astounding. At the risk of being repetitive, I again quote Chris Rock's observation…

Interviewer: How do you feel like things have changed over the past couple decades?

White people have gotten less crazy. That's all. [...] You can say “there's progress” and all of this. But when you say there's progress, but you're acting like what happened before wasn't crazy.

“Oh, segregation, we've made a lot of progress and there's no more segregation”?— Segregation's retarded. It's crazy to think you're better than somebody, and they can't eat with you and segr— that's crazy! That's insane behavior! Just to think that, on any level— that's kind of insane! So, you can say “black people have made progress”, but to say “black people have made progress” would mean we deserved to be segregated. The reality is: white people got less crazy.

My father didn't suddenly deserve to eat with people because he earned it. The people who were denying him his rights got less crazy. And that's what, progressively, has happened throughout the years. People are now getting less crazy about gay people. People are crazy.

-- Chris Rock, CBC Radio One "Q" interview
