My advice is don't worry about making an effective build on your first run. All the companions are mechanically pretty straight forward and if you just pick the recommend options they can carry a useless knight commander. Once you've got a feel for it you can start building crazy shit. Also there is a respec option and you shouldn't be afraid to use it.
