they can be useful to explain a concept to people, but i think simply pointing at one and saying "look i'm right!" isn't doing anything worthwhile. for example, there is actually a fairly famous abortion-related thought experiment that has been helpful at convincing people how banning abortion robs women of their autonomy. it can be helpful to explain it to certain men this way.

i've met someone like this! i have an ex bandmate who moved away to attempt to get a phd in philosophy on the coast (can't remember if he finished) and we had a conversation about Palestine when he moved back recently where he tried to bury everything in nuance speak. he kept obfuscating the issue until i had to end it by saying "okay fuck off."

this is completely fair. i feel like a lot of departments have a handful of cool weirdos and then the rest are the most pretentious people alive.

Ask their favourite ethical philosophy, and they’ll give you a blank stare.

i have a philosophy degree and i think asking someone this question is a complete waste of time because it does not matter at all

they always have been. i've been out as nonbinary since 2017 and i've had just as many weird libs be transphobic to me as conservatives. they just go about it differently.

I think he tried to back out because he didn't really want to buy the site to begin with and thought he could bail because he's a known liar. It was bad for him since he lost billions buying a thing that is not going to even get close to turning a profit, that's bleeding out users because of his decisions and is now less relevant culturally and for business than ever. These just aren't political implications right now because he's super rich which gives him the ability to eat the losses. Buying Twitter is a thing that helped make him less popular in the mainstream so it hurt his PR.

The reason why i don't think it hurt him politically is because that's not how our political economy works. he's rich enough that he could still help fund get out of the vote for Trump, which bought him influence. Buying twitter was a mistake, but it couldn't sink him because he's that rich and already connected to the government through his contracts.

I think Chinese media could play a big role in promoting more consciousness of what's going on over there.

I think in the short term yeah but I wouldn't be surprised if we ban Chinese media eventually for that reason.

I used to play bar trivia with a group of massive libs and the men on the team would pick arguments with me about China every week and then get mad when I wouldn't immediately agree with them. The lady in the group thanked me before she moved away bc she didn't think she'd ever heard someone talk about China the way I had before though so it wasn't completely pointless.

I don't think he was making bank though I think he was just doing it for the love of the game!

so...like any American social media site?

i had a friend in high school who would set his alarm during the summer so he'd be up in time to grind the ladder for Diablo (can't remember which one bc i'm not a gamer.)

he can't allow himself to be perceived as normal

no danger in that ever happening!
