Nope, but they look fine to me. Can you share an example

[–] zinklog@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

fyi they have added themes now so you might find a look that suits your tastes better, if none of them do then you can raise an issue on thier github or add an external theme

Oh we had censored some words like removed and removed since we got ad posts in the beginning of instance, it seems that had some negative effects. we'll remove those filters now, thanks for catching that error.

Saw my message just says removed lol, pretty good example of unintended consequences.

users won't want to use an instance that can't view content from threads (since that where's most content would be), but they'll be much more open to joining an open source instance that federated and views stuff from there as well.

[–] zinklog@lemmy.fmhy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

looking at the app it seems it's launched with just local content feed with a promise of being mastodon compatible in the future. I guess specifically to generate some unqiue content so people join.

I'm totally willing to discuss my thoughts since it seems I'm in the minority on this threads mania-

Once Threads launches it'll obviously have a lot more users than the whole fediverse combined, maybe even 90% of all users. Now let's say some instances with barely 1-2% users and small content feed defederate from it. Do people think a new user who does not care about things like open source or privacy will join the niche instance? No, people will go where the content is. Big social media giants will jump on fediverse bandwagon and instances who dont fetch their data will become extremely niche communtites (some might like that but it's not good for overall fediverse health).

Instead let's say we keep federated with threads, and make posts like how YSK: other instances don't track your data, other instances are free from corpo greed, other instances are run by normal people etc etc and make users aware and let them naturally migrate. Ideally, meta will bring the eyeballs which we can help to make fediverse as a whole grow.

imo it's naive to think that us 100k users defederating will put even a dent on threads. Insta tik-tok people will join the new trendy social media and generate content. The only solution is to make people constantly aware that better alternatives to view the same content exist.

the brand and million of dollars for ads. They'll push it as the main hub to browse mastodon content and then slowly try to make it a walled garden.

[–] zinklog@lemmy.fmhy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't see them blocking any instance.

To be sure I subscibed to a community from there and it's federating fine https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/boardgames@feddit.de

[–] zinklog@lemmy.fmhy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

A subscription import/export function would be much easier to implement but I don't think that's what users want when they say they want instance migration functionality.

Password managers are as important as adblockers in this day and age imo

Was with you until the money point. It's extremely easy to get this data and there will be many open source versions doing this thing.

But I agree that who upvoted a post shouldn't be federated.

for personal use, main reasons are you won't have to worry about instance admins making arbitrary decisions that you don't agree with, and no worries about server overload or downtime.

for making an instance for public, helping fediverse become a more viable alternative by spreading the load over more instances and helping it grow.

An article on why Meta entering the fediverse is not necessarily a good thing.

Following this post yesterday, the errors encountered by other admins were sorted and we realized captchas were not enough of a reason to keep people from experince the best version of Lemmy.

We are now on v0.18 with registration applications turned on, this is a temporary requirement until captchas are added back. If you encounter any bugs with the new version please mention them in the comments.

(Clear your cache if the new version doesn't load for you, should work fine after that.)

Official Announcement: https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/post/263377 Github Release Page: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/releases/tag/0.18.0

This is a massive upgrade, and a lot of the minor annoyances that users were finding about Lemmy has been fixed. You can check the above links for all the changes implemented but some of the major ones are:

  1. Websockets replaced by HTTP: What this means for you is that instances will feel snappier due to less load, and the annoying sudden flood of new posts when browing hot is also gone. In general hot/active sorting has been reworked and feel much better to browse.

  2. Links that would take you off-instance should now get automatically converted to ones that don’t. And just writing the name should be enough to turn it into a link. So no more manually searching for the linked communities you find in the comments.

  3. Support for 2-Factor Authentification.

  4. Custom emojis for Instances.

  5. Support for PWA.

  6. A Share Button.

  7. Improvements to overall look and feel of Lemmy.

Not to mention many under the hood changes like database optimizations and bug fixes. This is a very big version upgrade that's come at just the right time.

However, some Instance admins encountered errors when trying to upgrade. And captchas, which we rely on to prevent bots from flooding in, will come back only in version 0.18.1.

So our options are to either upgrade now, maybe have some downtime and to turn on registration applications, or wait until v0.18.1 is released before upgrading (which shouldn't take more than a few days). We are leaning towards option 2 for now, but interested in hearing what others have to say.

I also made a post collecting beginner guides for new lemmy users. Feel free to comment any new site and I'll update the list.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35555.

A fellow mod informed me that about it as I was laying in bed. Reddit sent a message to the mod team and after 1 hour demoded me. I didn't even had time to see it, never-mind respond to it.

Looks like we rattled reddit enough to start shooting. There goes all that fancy talk about our protest not affecting them much.

Just FYI for now. It's late here so I'll see how we proceed tomorrow.

Following the announcement by beehaw admins to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, there has been many posts and messages regarding that decisions and what other instances will do.

I personally believe Lemmy/kbin can only thrive if there is a free flow of content between different instances, with instance admins taking a back seat and focusing more on the infrastructure and making sure the technical bugs are smoothened out. Community mods can moderate their communities, and users can block the communities they don't find appealing (there's even a toggle in settings to hide every NSFW post from your feed altogether).

We don't want to create walled gardens, nor do we want to make Lemmy more confusing than it already is for new users. We will not be defederating from any instance if there is even one good community on it that our instance users might find useful. So far we have only blocked lemmygrad.ml, and right now we have no plans to block anyone else.
