If the audio is English, you can expect the English text stream to be called "closed captions"

[–] underscores@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

For anyone who wants to know the difference between these terms:

  • subtitles - just includes the dialogue
  • captions - also includes description of other sounds
  • closed - text is stored separately from the video, and can turn on and off while watching
  • open - text is part of the video image itself

You can include this one too:

  • forced - only includes subtitles for speech not in the main language (e.g. Vulcan speech is subtitled but English is not in Star Trek)

Aint "Open" actually burned-in?

Btw: For linebreaks you need to spaces after the Enter

[–] underscores@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

That's what burned in means.

I added an extra line break, but it already looked fine in the default webview and in Jerboa. Normally lists don't need line breaks around them.

What do you call DVD subtitles, which are in some ways closed (can be toggled) but in some ways like open (stored as bitmaps)?

[–] underscores@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I think that's still closed, just poorly done in a way that isn't very accessible.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Usually not but sometimes yeah. Trouble is that, even IF English (CC) had been available, the format and sync alone of Max closed captioning is so bad that It's literally worse than useless.

I'll probably see if I can't find the show with English subs on less official channels, once I'm not too busy complaining about Max sucking to watch lol

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Have you tried opensubtitles.org? Or any torrent tracker?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, when downloading or streaming unofficially, I always look for the torrent or streaming site that has subs when possible.

Just pretty damn annoying that a supposedly professional streaming site that charges a subscription fee won't even provide same-language subs for some of the shows!

And don't even get me started about how often the hypersmug face of Bill Maher shows up in their recommendations with no "don't show again" option🤦
