Damn, this is a really good point that I hadn't considered. It's the perfect example of how chasing "centrist" votes can only lead to further rightward shift. You can't fascism your way out of fascism.
The enabler-abuser dynamic is one of those things that once you see it for the first time, you'll start seeing it everywhere. From personal to the political. And yes, it's the perfect example of how politics shift further rightward in times of crisis.
