No.

Signal, while is End-to-End encrypted and cool, but it requires the central server. If the government shuts down the internet, you can't organize your protest

But Briar does not require a central server and lets you connect via internet (via tor), bluetooth, or share between devices connected to the same wifi.

Imagine a protest where everyone is using Brair (and have added everyone as contacts), they could create a forum and one message from one end of the street can travel across the entire swarm of protesters, doesn't matter if the government shut down the internet.

(I mean... at least until they figure out what y'all are doing and they start jamming bluetooth signals... 🤔 but even then, jammers have limited range, especially at the bluetooth spectrum)

All data is on your device (and all other devices the forum is shared with), there is no central server to take down content.

Don't take your phone to protests.

Depending on you goal.

For leaderless anonoymous protests, and you want to stay alive, sure.

For organized groups that are willing to take some risk and be martyrs, its worth considering.

Use a custom OS (like Graphene OS), turn on airplane mode, use bluetooth to communicate via brair. Its much harder (but not impossible) to track people this way.

Once you're at the protest you can talk in person. Sure,. Maybe organizers need some form of communication (and hopefully they do it securely), but otherwise there's no need. You can just speak with people. People have been protesting far longer than cell phones have existed.

Even people willing to take risks and be martyred should do it in a way that advances the goal. They shouldn't try to let themselves be tracked and watched/arrested in private away from the protest. If you're being arrested it should be forced to be in public and made into a show.
