I'm not super up on the details of this situation, but they had to know this would be the outcome, right? This was just bait, to make a point?

Their goal was to get attention, to force the media and public to start talking about it, to force western governments to pretend to care about it, ratchet up the international pressure by another notch. They have done everything they need to be successful at that. Now that they've been seized, it's our jobs to do what we can to make the rest of that happen.

The aid on the ship was symbolic. This was a protest action to call attention to Israel's continued blockade of food and other aid into Gaza.

I don't think they believed they would be kidnapped and detained in international waters, to be fair.

I think they did believe that was a strong possibility. I thought her video was a dead man’s switch release that she would prevent from going out if they made it out of international waters.

It was. The video was released as soon as they were taken off the boat.

I don't know why. The USS Liberty incident proved that Israel does this sort of shit.

They're a far right government.

This is the sad part. It's not the first and not the last time Israel has acted like this. Still, this protest is putting the media's waning obsession with Thunberg to good use. 👍

To make a point that israel is effectly controlling and occupying gaza and to test the western governments

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 10 points 2 days ago

You say that like it's a bad thing. Yes, this is political activism. Cameras on Thunberg, ready to document in real time how crazy the Israeli government is.

Ther's also the socio-emotional support for Palestinians. It's not just about material aid (though that is extremely pressing today).

Well sure, they knew this was a likely outcome - because they know the Israel government is batshit. The purpose of the mission was aid and activism. They definitely knew that arrest was likely, but that's not why the did it. They didn't want to be detained. They just want to help the people of Gaza in whatever way is within their power. This is how they chose to do it.

It may not be perfect, but it's definitely more effort and effect than doing nothing. And the more people who get on board with some actions, the more likely they are to succeed.
