If you must use your ISP's ONT, have it set to bridge mode. And then use whatever router you're comfortable administrating. Open WRT is perfectly good for this.
The benefits of bridge mode are that your routing device has the public IP address. And controls everything. Some of the more evil ISPs won't let you set bridge mode on their device unless you open a support ticket it's worth it to do so.

PS: If anyone cares: For Vodafone Germany, you have to enable bridge mode on their Website by logging into your account first.
Wow, you're in Germany? I figured the EU would've had laws against this by now
You are correct, since August 2016 you are free to choose your router in Germany (and presumably in the whole EU) so I don't know why OP is using a bridge mode here instead of just using another router directly.
My OpenWRT router does not support the cable Vodafone uses for their 1GBit fiber connection. And yes I know the Fritzbox Cable exists, but flashing OpenWRT onto that is a nightmare.
