What is Hexbear? (hexbear.net)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by CARCOSA@hexbear.net to c/hexbear@hexbear.net

My answer:

When chapotraphouse was banned on reddit many mods and users came together to create a space on a link aggregator platform.

Choosing lemmy the original admin and developer team decided to fork it for various reasons. About a year ago, sustained effort was taken to upstream many of the forked features so that we could rebase with current version lemmy and federate.

Over the years hexbear has become a non-sectarian social media space for sharing news, memes, links, posts and comments with each other as the mods endeavour to make the space welcoming to marginalized people.

  • If I try to upload into Body - after a few seconds the process stops.

  • If I try to upload into comment. It's the same - after a few seconds the process stops.

  • In a post if I try to use "Image" and upload - the spinner never stops spinning. That's the case for this post itself too.

  • If I put a Imgur link into Thumbnail URL - the image doesn't appear. An example vvv

A comrade recently raised the issue that Kamakawiwoole's emote is being grossly misused to represent the Israeli occupation, as for an alternative name, I would like to ask for ideas from people with more knowledge of the indigenous Hawaiian independence movement, or preferably that are part of that movement.

The simplest would just be to add "see bio" to the pronoun drop-down, but more ideally this would be something you could check to add to the end of your pronouns, e.g. Erika3sis [she/her, xe/xem (see bio)]

(obviously it's ok that this user got banned, it's just the switch2boycott/andjusticeforall/basedball or whatever person who has said transphobic things in the past, that's not my point)

In the post in question, there was never any indication that the girlfriend character was not a girl, and I hope that the Hexbear mod team can at least recognize that it's possible for a person to both be a girl and nonbinary at the same time.

I feel like comments have dropped a lot in this last few days. I see some, though, so they're not all getting eaten, but it seems eerily quiet.

Extract from the Resolution of the 19th Congress of the CPRF “On Restoring Full Historical Justice with Regard to Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin”

July 23, 2025

[Joseph] Vissarionovich Stalin occupies a special place in people’s memory. His image ranks with those of the great ancestors who formed the glory and might of the Motherland and saved our people from enslavement and death. His name is forever inscribed in history side by side with that of the founder of the Soviet statehood, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin.

Today, even as the collective West and NATO are mounting an aggression against Russia, Lenin and Stalin stand together in the ranks of the fighters for the freedom and independence of our Motherland. The Soviet people have never disowned Stalin. Party members and non- members alike cherish the image of a demanding and just leader and the victories scored under his leadership will forever remain in the history of our country.

Shortly after Stalin’s death, on the initiative of N.Khruschev, a dirty campaign was launched to smear his name and belittle his contribution to the cause of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the recovery of our country. Counting on gaining cheap popularity, N.S. Khruschev roundly criticized the results of the 30 years of Stalin’s rule. His destructive activity in exposing the “personality cult” seriously undermined the international authority of the USSR and became a generous gift to the enemies of Soviet power because it prompted many questions and gave rise to differences among the friends and allies of the [USSR in] the world arena. [And yet the objective lack of materials besmirching] Stalin’s name and cause and the fact of deliberate removal of authentic documents from state archives and planting of fakes in it has been proven. [The fact of “cleaning up” of archive documents under Gorbachev] and Yeltsin has been established. Heavy damage was inflicted on the cause of socialism by the second wave of “destalinization” connected with the decisions of the 22nd Congress of the CPSU.

Marxism-Leninism teaches us that the only right way for the communists is the way of historical truth. It must be known, protected and restored. The life and struggle of Stalin, like those of any historical figure, were not devoid of shortcomings and contradictions. But errors and miscalculations were in many cases rectified on his own initiative to form the basis of further strengthening of socialist legality. Even all the abuses in the life of the party and the country taken together cannot outweigh Stalin’s role in defending the Leninist course, ensuring the unity of communists, building up the industrial might of the USSR and organizing resistance to the Fascization of Europe. His contribution to the Great Victory over German Nazism and Japanese militarism is colossal. Meanwhile as cribbing setbacks to a single person, even an outstanding one, is incompatible with the party or scientific approach to history. The leadership of the party and state was conscious of the fallacy of [Khruschev’s actions]. As a result, he was removed from his posts.

In the years when the party and country were led by L.I.Brezhnev “the personality cult” ceased to dominate the assessment of Stalin’s historical role. Some important steps were afoot on the initiative of K.U. Chernenko on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory. But full historical justice was not restored. The election of M.S.Gorbachev as [General] Secretary at the March 1985 Plenary session of the CCCPSU marked the starting point of a man-made crisis within the party, followed by a criminal dismantling of the USSR.

The CPRF in its work more than once assessed Khruschev’s “decrowning” of Stalin as politically harmful and morally wrong. True communists and our allies can subscribe to the words of the legendary Stalin Defense Minister, Marshall D.F. Ustinov: “No enemy has done as much harm to us as Khruschev through his policy toward the past of our party and state and the attitude to Stalin.” The CPRF, being an ideological heir to the RSDLP – RSDLP (B)- RCP (B)- AUCP (B)-CPSU –CPRSFSR, is consistently fighting against falsification of the history of the great Soviet era.

The time has come to declare the need to restore the full historical justice with regard to [Joseph] Vissarionovich Stalin. The 19th Congress of the CPRF deems it necessary:

  • to assess N.S.Khruschev’s report “On the Cult of Personality and its Consequences” delivered to the delegates of the 20th CPSU Congress on February 25, 1956 already after the Congress closed, as erroneous and politically biased. The text of the report contains doctored facts and false charges against [J.V.] Stalin, distorting the truth about his state and party activities;

  • to recognize that the resolutions and decisions of the 22nd CPSU Congress concerning the assessment of the role and place of Stalin in the history of the party and the country were destructive and caused great harm to the building of socialism in the USSR and the world communist movement;

  • to call on President Putin of the Russian Federation to return to the city of Volgograd and the Volgograd Oblast their heroic names Stalingrad and the Stalingrad Oblast. The decisions on renaming them were ungrounded. They do not contribute to preserving the historical memory and the solution of Russia’s strategic tasks of defeating neo-Nazism, protecting the sovereignty and national security;

  • the CPRF committees of all levels and the party’s information services to make active use of this resolution in covering topical issues of ideological struggle. To develop and introduce a relevant study course in the system of party- political instruction;

  • to carry on the work to immortalize the memory of [J.V.] Stalin, research and propagandize his theoretical and practical legacy and actualize it in the activities of the CPRF and left-patriotic forces at the present stage.

Opened the site while pooping and was greeted with

Go back to lemmy.ml you hexbear CCP cocksucker.

Very funny, but i think it would be better to remove taglines that contain offensive rhetoric

Voidlings (lemmy.ml)
submitted 2 months ago by Ves_Amu@lemmy.ml to c/hexbear@hexbear.net

What is a Voidling? Voidling is about being a subculture that has branched out from Voidpunk. While Voidpink centers on being nonhuman, Voidlings focus on The Void. Voidpunk says "If you treat me nonhuman then maybe I am" vs Voidlings who are like "I am nonhuman because I am The Void".

A being could be A Voidling if they feel they are have an identity with The Void. What is The Void? It is a promoridial force of nature that is about the silence of fhe Universe. You can feel like you have a natural affinity for The Void (Void Born) or feel that you are merging with it (Void Merger).
There is more information about Voidlings! []()

I do not enjoy seeing ignoramuses' several-paragraph-long rants about "tankies" when checking the front page. Ideally, it would be possible to disable only that type of tagline, while leaving other taglines be.

I don't know if other people have already proposed this — I can't imagine I'm alone in feeling this way, but I also can't easily find anyone else who's made this suggestion.

I tend to purge my account around once a year for opsec but I want to keep this username for when Chuck kicks the bucket. How would I go about that? Also if anyone has any username recommendations that would be appreciated.

So, weird request/suggestion based on the attached image, which is kinda funny in of itself but i'll get to that.

I remember people noticing that with a previous Lemmy update, sometimes links to certain content - from what I can see, specifically news website articles (maybe this is amp link related because it's clearly not every webpage) and some video hosts - seemed to "auto-expand" inline on the hexbear page, allowing people to read the article or play the video without leaving the hexbear post/opening a new tab. Seemed like a cool enough feature.

This morning, I go ahead and click through to comments on a post about Leavitt wanting to denaturalise Momdani or some shit, and I get the image attached. My work sysadmin has applied a block rule to Tankie Tube which I would generally find unsurprising (small video hoster, unvetted by them so easy to just block. they've done it before to smalltime video rehosters used on the soccer subreddit because they all get nuked regularly), except they've flagged it as porn.

I find this funny because of our strict hentai-free & volcel-police stance, but unfortunately i don't think it's prudent to request a review with my work IT department to vet the site, because i then have to explain that I'm spending some time shitposting on work hours.

However, it's now a catch-22 where either I explain that Tankie Tube isn't porno but reveal that I browse hexbear on company time and get in trouble/fired, or I accidentally click posts that would otherwise be interesting and get flagged for "attempting to view porno" and get fired. I trust that none of you are dumb enough to suggest that I simply do not browse hexbear while at work LIB

So, is there a way at user-level to disable this function? There's an "Auto Expand Media" checkbox under settings, but that instead auto-expands every single image on the frontpage/postlist and doesn't have anything to do with the inline expansion of content when viewing an individual post.

Is there a sleek way to upload a new Thumbnail URL when I'm editing a post?

I'm on a desktop. This is what I ~~have to~~ did.

  1. Open a new tab.

  2. Upload the image.

  3. Copy the URL and paste it into the Thumbnail URL of the original post.

If you don't already know... If you stay in original post and upload an image - the image url goes into the URL field and your original URL is gone.

---

Edit 1

I made a change for clarity.

---

Edit 2

hellinkilla pointed out something very simple.

I just upload it as part of the post text using the WYSIWYG toolbar.

I somehow convinced myself I had to open a new tab. Don't ask me why.

Update: Due to overwhelming support for defederation, we will be going through with that at 12am Moscow time (approx. 8hrs from now). Thanks to everyone who provided their feedback.

It's come to our attention that the admins of europe.pub are allowing pro-genocide rhetoric and Nazi propaganda to be freely posted on their instance.

Additionally, the main perpetrator has been promoted to moderator on the Poland@europe.pub comm where they consistently post pro-ukrainian-nazi propaganda and wish death upon the Russian people.

Due to these factors and the unwillingness of europe.pub admins to act, we are holding a vote to defederate from their instance. Please comment with either an emote or yes/no to the question: should we defederate from europe.pub?

eu-cool or "Yes" - Defederate

poland-cool or "No" - Remain federated

Whenever I've used the search function, it returns almost nothing relevant to what I'm looking for, and the time constraints don't work. If I look for things using the "top (time)" feature, I always get results outside of the desired time period. Why does this happen, is a fix in progress, and how hard would it be to implement?

After discussing this with the people most often using the mutual aid community and feedback here we will be making a single change.

Meta posts will no longer be permitted in !mutual_aid@hexbear.net critical meta posts must not be about specific users and posted in !feedback@hexbear.net at risk of removal.

We will change the mutual aid sidebar to remove the clause permitting meta posts, we will also ask that users post once a day so that everyone's post's can be seen but this is not a hard rule as it is pretty clear that removing posts is a last resort in that community. This joins the other community recommendations that users include currency, how much is needed, updating when a user has received funds, or updating/locking the post when the need has been met.

This will be unfeatured in about 12 hours

~~Hello users of hexbear:

Due to recent meta posts in our mutual aid community we wanted to open up discussion about the community !mutual_aid@hexbear.net

We will never require explanation or justification from a user asking for aid in the community, and the mod and admin team continue to commit to not featuring an individual's mutual aid request to prevent unfair exposure.

In addition, we will maintain a strict "No critical comments or meta comments" on a mutual aid post.

This post is to discuss the mutual aid community's rule of allowing meta posts: mutual aid as a community, those making posts in it and those commenting on posts.

We are considering removing the exception allowing meta posts but wanted to involve the userbase before committing to a change.

Please comment with any thoughts, feelings, or suggestions regarding this change.

Thank you~~

Hi I am in a rly awful mood rn xwx

I shouldn't even be here rn, I deleted my main acct just cuz the drama here got too be way too much for me to not feel like shit half the time I visit but I still lurk for some reason (there is no other site like this place in spite of its incredible ability to generate fighting over pointless and/or esoteric stuff)

Maybe it's just me being more sensitive to it lately cuz I haven't been struggling with mental health as much in past year but I feel like it's getting worse

And every time I read these threads it's the most obvious alt accounts for ppl who have been banned like 100 times already and I've been so online I am like 67% sure I can tell who is who now lmao

DayOfDoom (not to target you specificallyyy but its been very blatant and ofc that was part of your bit for a while) and all the creepy and/or brainwormed cis white guys who got purged during the last site cultural revolution before everyone involved burned out or left are still fucking here (the rowing guy, for example, I actually like you but it is kinda wild how mad and like.... antisocial the gas stove thing made you :| I had to remove some of your posts right after that omg, idk)

Idk what's up with Melina but even me mentioning faer is gonna invoke some of those irony poisoned ppl in fae's social circle to start shit under this post with their 17 alt accts lol. Literally just read their names. Do you recognize them? Was their account made 13 days ago and has been solely posting in /c/fakenews or the news thread? Do they post anything other than irony poisoned bits or antisocial yearning for billions to die? It's so fucking obvious but we aren't banning them, idek

Oooh, and one of the more entertaining and obvious wreckers I like to watch is Voight :3 Guy who posts like 10 rant replies to you before you even see their first reply. Did you end up going to Vietnam? I hope you're logged the fuck off now lol, site stuff obviously rly bothering you :/ I'm too tired to remember details of weird politics stuff you posted

Ugh idk, here's some things I think we should do:

  • Ban /c/fakenews

Yeah it's mostly not funny and is run by and invites the same kind of irony poisoned ppl who keep cooking new drama. It was basically Melina's comm for a while cuz almost no one else wanted to be around fae's posting

  • News threads and general megathreads need more oversight or smth

The news megas are kinda likeee a whole different site, populated both by ppl who have genuinely interesting stuff to share even if it's often wrong and the rly brainwormed irony poisoned geopolitics enjoyers. I didn't spend a lot of time there just cuz idk... vibes were off kinda so others know a lot more about their drama incidents than me. But there are a lot of ppl who were banned or need to be banned who only participate in the news thread and go on the main site to stir up shit lol. Here's some words to create ✧˖°. discussion ✧˖°.: ZPoster the ultimate ban evader, uhhhh LargePenis getting bullied off the site for a bit with a lot of it from ZPoster, also its kinda wild anyone thought that xiaohongshu imposter drama post could've been anything but one of their haters from the news thread making fun of them

The general megathreads..... okay Im running out of horrible self-harming drama energy to keep writing buttttt they did often have ppl posting a lot of rly personal stuff especially about other ppl in a way that is rly problematic and continues to be (ban crushposting, just fuckin ban it)

  • Make the site account creation process require an invite or someone to vouch for you. Or start logging IP addresses, idk. Have the server pipe log output to a program that greps for them, sends a copy over a encrypted connection to a . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . securer . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . machine that the admins control directly, and sends the rest to /dev/null, something, anything. Not logging IP addresses doesn't rly mean anything tbh, it's running on a cloud server in fuckin :france-cool: feds can get those IP addresses easily if they want them, get them off the server so hypothetical hackers cant get at them all easily but yeh

Here's a hot take: power posters CAN be good.

It means literally nothing for your opsec that you delete your account periodically. We have a wrecker (I can't find the source for this rn) who has admitted that they have a server federated to us, which means they SEE and SAVE EVERYTHING. Who upvotes what, what actions moderators have taken, the polite requests to delete stuff local users deleted (for a while, post deletions didn't even federate lmao)

Also, Lemmy is scraped constantly now. Not only by ppl who need AI stuff or advertisers or whatever. Plug you account into the wayback machine here: https://web.archive.org/ I bet it's there lol

How can you build a community when everyone is changing names and avatars every few weeks? You can't, which is why we have a community of power posters for better or worse

Power posters create so much of this fuckin drama but also any one power poster is soooooo much less likely to be doing the kind of shit the obvious alt accounts are doing, cuz being here for any extended length of time and being recognized means you are trusted more to some extent

Okay im hitting post before every neuron is telling me not to post this

Oh one last thing, there is an incredibly trivial way for anyone to see who is performing moderation actions. Admins of other servers in the network can also see and that is probably unfixable

None of this info I learned through privileged channels

Also also, the Lemmy code sucks ass, how does every Rust project start to look like a node.js project after like a year lmao

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. To avoid this outcome and keep Lemmy growing, I ask you to please make a recurring donation:

Liberapay | Ko-fi | Patreon | OpenCollective | Crypto

If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Please use the link below to see current donation stats and make your contribution! We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

Due to overwhelming support for unilateral defederation from feddit.uk, we will be doing so tomorrow at 8:30pm Moscow time. Please see the previous thread for context.

We wanted to give everyone a heads-up since after we defederate, numerous account actions and deletions will NOT update on the defederated instance due to coding limitations in lemmy. This includes:

-Post edits and deletions

-Account edits (bio, profile picture, display name)

-Account deletions

In the future this will likely be fixed, but due to the dev work required it's not feasible to change in the short term. If you have any account or post changes you want to make, please do so before 4/27 8:30pm Moscow Time, or when this post is 24hrs old.

Thanks to everyone who provided their feedback. We will continue to fight transphobia and reactionary rhetoric on this instance for the safety of our users red-fist
