In lieu of Gomorrah (2008), I'm showing Cidade de Deus/City of God (2002) tonight. Romanzo Criminale series 2 will begin next week! Gomorrah is a slog to watch, good, but unflinchingly bleak in how it presents the mundanity of the violence the Camorra do in Naples and vicinity.

Cidade de Deus/City of God, on the other hand, is fun. Based on a true story and shot in and around Rio de Janeiro, it follows a couple of kids from the margins of the city as they chase their dreams. Rocket dreams of being a photographer. Zé Pequeno wants to build a drug empire.

Series 1 of Romanzo Criminale goes out with a bang. Episode 11 begins with Inspector Scialoja in Modena, several hundred kilometers north of Rome, following the last visit he got from Italian Deep State Mr. Show. It is August 1980. The Bologna Massacre has just taken place, just down the road from Modena. Is there a connection?

Meanwhile in Rome, the gang find themselves increasingly ensnared in GLADIO shenanigans. Episode 12 sees Inspector Scialoja take on the secret services while Libanese attempts to convert his horizontally-organized criminal organization into a more corporate structure. Meanwhile, the Years of Lead continue to happen. Events continue to escalate. The deep state shows up more and more. We end on a cliffhanger.

a description of the series from the IMDB page:

The series is partially based on Banda della Magliana, a 1970s criminal organization active in Rome led by three friends, Libanese, Freddo and Dandi, who attempted to merge local gangs in a mafia feud like Sicilian and Neapolitan organizations. Their history matched with right-wing terrorism groups, deviated secret service, masonic lodges and financial affairs.

I'm doing blanket CWs for the series. Expect lots of gore, sex, drugs.

Tonight for Death and Dismememberment Thursday we're watching Road House (1989), a prime piece of 1980s Hollywood action cheese and the best film ever directed by a former grip named Rowdy. The plot is ridiculous. Patrick Swayze plays Dalton, a bouncer with a philosophy degree from NYU who says things like "pain don't hurt" and kicks a lot of ass. He shows some ass too, at some point. There is death, there is dismemberment, there is a polar bear, there is some kind of a plot about how gentrification is good, actually? Ben Gazarra and Sam Eliot, who both appeared in The Big Lebowski (1998) make an appearance here. There's a monster truck. There's head-scratchingly well-crafted bad dialogue galore.

It's unfortunately not uncommon for people to find your transitioning cute or endearing or positive in the abstract but once they have to acknowledge that you are in fact who you are and you expect them to respect that, fall off like that. You're cute to them as a pet, as a toy, but not as a fully realized human being.

Transitioning really put into contrast who my friends were and who tolerated me so long as I was useful to them somehow. I keep my friends close, anyone who tries to put a disclaimer on their support of trans people - of transfems in particular - can fuck right off. I don't have time for that shit.

Episodes 7 and 8 of Series 1 of Romanzo Criminale la serie tonight. Last week Bufalo showed himself to be deeply tied up with Italian intelligence agencies/the actual deep state when it was still a phrase that meant something. Libanese, Freddo, Dandi, et al. continue to consolidate their control over the Roman underworld while the Anni di Piombo heat up around them. We saw how the Italian security services interfere with local police to ensure their preferred organized crime groups are able to operate without interference. Aldo Moro is dead, and the intelligence services let it happen because it serves their material interests. This was a warning to liberal bourgeois politicians not to collaborate with Communists in any way, shape, or form or the same thing will happen to them.

We see things continue to escalate tonight. PCI cadres are realizing an armed struggle is a necessary part of any revolutionary movement. As the gang's power continues to grow, they begin to brush up against other, more established organized crime factions. The Sicilian mafia are interested in a piece of the action now. We've already seen Camorra factions (from Naples) and possibly 'Ndragheta (from Calabria) as well, make their presence felt in Rome. The wheels of power operate smoothly through a combination of brutal violence and fistfuls of cash. Let's see what happens!

Cud 'n' Tith's Death and Dismemberment Early Thursday Movie Nights

When I started collaborating with @CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net on these early Thursdays I knew we had some overlapping tastes in film and I was excited to see what kind of themes would emerge. 4 weeks in, and a couple more weeks of films' planned out, the only real consistent theme has been that someone either dies tragically/brutally (but it's funny) or else someone gets dismembered (and it's funny). I thought there might be some kind of conversation about the construction of honor or what makes a man a man, but ultimately we both enjoy and want to share films that involve death or dismemberment. So, going forward, we're making the early Thursday slot into Death 'n' Dismemberment Thursday.

Not everything will be quite so darkly tragicomic as In Bruges (2009) or The Banshees of Inisherin (2018), nor will it be so ineptly made as Samurai Cop (1994) or Mafia vs. Ninja (1984). At some point we may show something that does not involve an obvious death or loss of bodily integrity. "But Tithonis," you may be wondering, "how can it be Death 'n' Dismemeberment Thursday if there's neither death nor dismemberment?" Dear viewer, that is where it gets fun. Cud and I will have to articulate the way in which there is, in some way, shape, or form, at least some kind of spiritual dismemberment, or death, however tenuous, however flimsy the pretext may be. Do we find it moving? Can we convince the other to show it? Then it becomes an exercise for the viewer to figure out where the death and dismemberment are. Sometimes the real death and dismemberment is the friends we made along the way.

Tonight's Death 'n' Dismemberment

First I'm showing Paradis/Paradise (1984), an animated short film directed by Ishu Patel. It's absolutely beautiful to watch. This one is a stretch to include, but I think it qualifies. It was Oscar nominated for Best Short Film (Animated) in 1984. From the "Education" section of the National Film Board of Canada page on the film:

Brief “lesson launcher type” activity or a series of inquiry questions with a bit of context:

An animated film about the adventures of a bird seeking recognition from others. No dialogue; music and sound effects with animation.

How does the contrast between the backdrop of the palace and the characters/birds create visual interest?

The bird wants to look more colourful, and in the process of trying to obtain the materials for the costume, he disrupts many around him. Have you ever had an experience where you had to take from someone? How did it make you feel? How did others react to your actions?

The bird wants to be acknowledged as beautiful, and when he is, he is captured. Do you think this is what he had in mind? Why or why not?

What makes the bird appreciate his own beauty by the end of the film? What lesson can we learn from the bird’s experience?

The main event is The Big Lebowski (1998), directed by Joel Coen, written by Joel and Ethan Coen. This was considered a flop when it was released but has since developed a cult following. It's one of the best films they've done, in my opinion. I saw it during its initial theatrical run, the second week it was in theaters, and there were 3 or 4 other people there. I'm glad it's gotten the appreciation it deserves.

Jeff Bridges plays Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a guy who likes to bowl. There is another Jeffrey Lebowski in Los Angeles, and their paths intersect. Things escalate from there. I thought of it when i saw In Bruges, and again with The Banshees of Inisherin; the way the dialogue in those is written rhymes with the way the dialogue in this is written. There is dismemberment. There is death. There is bowling.

We begin episode 5 of season 1 of Romanzo Criminale in the shadow of the assassination of Aldo Moro. I've been trying and failing to write something up about his assassination without success, so I'm including the Wikipedia article on the Strategy of Tension instead. It's Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt:

A strategy of tension (Italian: strategia della tensione) is a political policy where violent struggle is encouraged rather than suppressed. The purpose is to create a general feeling of insecurity in the population and make people seek security in a strong government.

The strategy of tension is most closely identified with the Years of Lead in Italy from 1968 to 1982, in which far-left Marxist groups, far-right neo-fascist extra-parliamentary groups and state intelligence agencies performed bombings, kidnappings, arsons, and murders. Some historians and activists have accused NATO of allowing and sanctioning such terrorism, through projects such as Operation Gladio, although this is disputed by other historians and denied by the intelligence agencies involved. Other cases where writers have alleged a strategy of tension include the deep state conspiracy theory in Turkey from the 1970s–1990s, the war veterans and ZANU–PF in Zimbabwe which coordinated the farm invasions of 2000, the DRS security agency in Algeria from 1991 to 1999, and the Belgian State Security Service during the Belgian terrorist crisis of 1982–1986.

According to the sociologist Franco Ferraresi, the term "strategy of tension" was first used in an article on the Piazza Fontana bombing in The Observer newspaper, published on 14 December 1969. Neal Ascherson, one of those responsible for that article, later clarified that the expression had been suggested to him by the journalists Antonio Gambino and Claudio Risé, both of L'Espresso, who had been in conversation with him in the days immediately following the explosion of the Piazza Fontana bomb.

...

From 1968 to 1982, Italy suffered numerous terrorist attacks by both the left and the right, which were often followed by government round-ups and mass arrests. Allegations, especially made by adherents of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), are that the government trumped up and intentionally allowed the attacks of communist radicals, or even carried out false flag operations in their name, as an excuse to arrest other communists, and allowed the attacks of far-right paramilitary organizations as an extrajudicial way to silence enemies.

Various parliamentary committees were held to investigate and prosecute these crimes in the 1990s. A 1995 report from the Left Democrats (a merger of former center-left parties and the PCI) to a subcommittee of the Italian Parliament stated that a "strategy of tension" had been supported by the United States to "stop the PCI, and to a certain degree also the PSI, from reaching executive power in the country". Aldo Giannuli, a historian who worked as a consultant to the parliamentary terrorism commission, wrote that he considered the Left Democrats' report as dictated primarily by domestic political considerations rather than historical ones: "Since they have been in power the Left Democrats have given us very little help in gaining access to security service archives," he said. "This is a falsely courageous report." Giannuli did decry the fact that many more leftist terrorists were prosecuted and convicted than rightist terrorists, though.

Swiss academic Daniele Ganser wrote NATO's Secret Armies, a 2004 book that alleged direct NATO support for far-right terrorists in Italy as part of its "strategy of tension". Ganser also alleges that Operation Gladio, an effort to organize stay-behind guerrillas and resistance in the event of a communist takeover of Italy by the Eastern Bloc, continued into the 1970s and supplied the far-right neo-fascist movements[example needed] with weapons. Ganser's conclusions have been disputed; most notably, Ganser heavily cites the document US Army Field Manual 30-31B, which the US state department claims is a 1976 Soviet hoax meant to discredit the US, whilst others such as Ray S. Cline have claimed it is likely authentic and Licio Gelli who claimed it was in fact given to him by the CIA.

In a 1992 BBC documentary on Gladio titled Operation GLADIO, the neo-fascist terrorist Vincenzo Vinciguerra reported that the stay-behind armies really did possess this strategy, stating that the state needed those terrorist attacks for the population to willingly turn to the state and ask for security.

I'm doing blanket CWs for the series. Expect lots of gore, sex, drugs, violence, terrible men doing terrible things.

If this is a consequence of being raised AMAB I wish all the creepy cishet men on earth who I've had the displeasure of interacting with would have internalized it. If anything, the performance of hegemonic masculinity expects that you be brazen, threatening, indifferent towards the consequences of expressing your desire. And to show any hesitation is blood in the water.

It's a queer experience (ask cis queer people about it!) and it's a neurodivergent experience. It's an EMPOC experience too! It's nothing to do with what a doctor decided when you were born however long ago, though. It's a consequence of existing outside of hegemonic conceptualizations of masculinity.

I sent my girlfriend my cutest flannel in the mail and it finally showed up a few days ago. There's a package somewhere in transit to me right now from her and I could not be more excited for it to arrive.

cw alcoholShe got white girl drunk (drank one beer) last night and couldn't stop telling me she loves me. She's usually a little bit more reserved than that. In Cerivisia Veritas, or however the saying goes. I'm usually the gushier of the two of us but she had me outclassed last night! So sweet, so gay, so grateful to have her in my life.

It took me 20+ years to finally work up to doing something about my gender but everything that has transpired since I transitioned (it's been a while!) has made me more convinced every day that I did the right thing. I had no idea life could be this good.

Doubling your commute time and paying that much more in rent, for me, cancel out any benefit there might be from the living arrangement. You can put the money you save in rent aside to visit them with the extra ±5 hours a week you have staying where you are. Is there any other reason you'd have to move?

We're off to an early start tonight! Do you like coherent, well-told stories? Expressive acting? A plot? You're in the wrong place. Tonight's about Japanese gangster ninjas trying to sell drugs in your city, and how to stop them, judicially or extrajudicially. My approach to this collaborative cinematic appetizer has been to riff of of whatever @CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net showed the week previous, and if anyone else can see some connection between these and In Bruges (2009), I'd like to hear about it. Cud will be arriving fashionably late tonight, so I'll be hosting most of the first half solo.

I first saw Mafia vs. Ninja (1984) at 2 am on a local UHF station a very long time ago. The fight scenes are very well done, the plot is incredibly flimsy, and the Wikipedia page for it is about the only decent source for information about it I've found:

Mafia vs. Ninja, also known as Hongmen jue e zhe (simplified Chinese: 洪门小子; traditional Chinese: 洪門小子; pinyin: Hóngmén xiǎozi; lit. 'Mafia boys or The Organization's boys'), is a 1984 martial arts film directed by Robert Tai. Made in Hong Kong, it stars Alexander Lou alongside Charlema Hsu, Silvio Azzolini and Eugene Thomas. The film was originally released as a mini-series of several episodes which was later edited to create the theatrical version. Both versions follow the basic storyline structure, although the mini-series provides richer detail and background for the main characters and the antagonists.

Two sewage workers, Jack Do (Alexander Lou) and Charlie Wu (Charlema Hsu), get mixed up in heavy business when their mobster boss is assassinated by another mobster who wants to control Shanghai and overflow the streets with opium, along with the usual mafia-related affairs such as gambling and prostitution. He is aided by a team of four professional assassins, the most notable two being foreigners: one an African American fighter called Mr. Jones (Eugene Thomas), the other an Italian knife throwing expert called Mimo (Silvio Azzolini). The other two are a Japanese swordsman named Fuji and a Ninjitsu Kusarigama master confusingly also called Mimo.

Samurai Cop (1991) is an ineptly-made direct-to-video action movie about Japanese ninja gangsters trying to sell cocaine in LA. There's a vision to it, I presume, but what vision there is, isn't well-articulated. I have never watched it the whole way through in one sitting, so I'll be discovering it with y'all.

Again, from Wikipedia:

When a renegade Japanese gang known as the Katana take control of the cocaine trade in Los Angeles, the LAPD transfer in a "samurai" policeman from the SDPD to help tackle the problem. Joe Marshall has been trained by the masters in Japan and "speaks fluent Japanese", but dresses like a commoner.

Come join us for at 5 pm EDT for the first two episodes of Romanzo criminale – La serie! The show is an adaptation of the 2005 film Romanzo Criminale, in turn based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Giancarlo De Cataldo. Rougly based on the true story of the Banda della Magliana, a Roman criminal syndicate that emerged during the late 1970s amidst the political turmoil of the Years of Lead. Shot on location in and around Rome, most of the characters speak Romanesco. The series (and the film it's based off of) form a kind of central Italian companion piece to Gomorrah, which I will also be showing at some point.

Episode 1 opens with the news of the killing of the lawyer Fulvio Croce by the Brigate Rossi in 1977. Three friends, Libanese, Freddo, and Dandi, decide to up their game from petty crime to the domination of the Roman criminal underground. Opposite them is police commissioner Nicola Scialoja, whose links to communists lead to his investigation into the gang being undermined by his superiors, whose links to GLADIO and neo-Fascist organizations become evident later on. Episode 2 sees the trio, flush with cash, begin to flesh out their vision of a criminal empire. This show was a cult favorite in Italy when it aired; it's a favorite of mine as well.

CWs:

This is not a complete list; I couldn't find any CW lists at any of the usual places for this but it is explicit. There's drugs/sex/violence/gore/misogyny/gambling throughout the series. I'll work on getting a more granular list going forward.

  • Graphic violence
  • Murder
  • Execution by gunshot
  • Kidnapping
  • Gambling
  • Usury
  • Explicit substance use and trafficking
  • Misogyny
  • Homophobia
  • Police brutality
  • Sex, nude scenes, objectification of women
  • Violence, blood, and gore
  • Sexual assault/casual disregard for the notion of consent
