The First International Syndicalist Congress was a meeting of European and Latin American syndicalist organizations at Holborn Town Hall in London that began on this day in 1913. The congress was attended by 38 delegates representing 65 organizations from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, with a total membership between 220,000 and 250,000.

Despite being marked by heated disagreements over both tactics and principles, the Congress succeeded in creating the International Syndicalist Information Bureau as a vehicle of exchange and solidarity between the various organizations, and the "Bulletin international du mouvement syndicaliste" as a means of communication. It would be viewed as a success by almost all who participated.

My adoptive parents after not getting me anything for my birthday and having people over the entire day (not for my birthday, just for their sake) but having a cake and people over for their biological children: yeah we're trying to celebrate everything this year

Watching morning news while I'm out running an errand. They're hyping up a planned Biden campaign visit to the UAW picket line so hard. zomg, so heckin porgressive!

Ugh. I'm also exhausted from arguing with my family yesterday about Biden and the 3rd consecutive "most important election of our lifetime". I was told "the internet is telling people your vote does matter and it's a big disinformation scheme." I was asked how voting for Biden will fix things. I was told "it doesn't matter. what choice to we have? if Trump wins, we'll never have another election again!"

btw, these people aren't random. they're political elites. and they still believe that. so then like... wtf are you doing about it. they're also part of the political machine, and don't believe there is a political machine that decides candidates, etc. which is fascinating. some amount of political machination in this country is malicious. but I think a large amount, more on the dem side but on both sides, is people collectively acting in a way that produces outcomes beyond what they expect. sort of cascading chains of systems, where the people pulling strings legitimately don't even think they are pulling strings.

Has anyone made an AI voice of the deserter from Disco Elysium read the copypasta about the bitter commie who lives in a t-34?

I really should learn to manage not being self sabotaging/destructive for once since I had to make a new account. Also ohnoes fuck, since having to change my diet after my wisdom teeth removal from last week, I weigh like 89lb now.

Unrelated but there also something really nice about cold water and just bundling up under a ton of blankets

It's really cool that trees make wood like it's just that easy. It's also neat how trees can form complex networks with fungus I think? and I recall reading how like there was this one like mini forest that actually just one tree? Anyways trees are cool

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

Trees turn atmospheric carbon into tree! They're so cool, plus they're self propagating (well kinda).

The fact that bees can just make a substance that I don't think we've even been able to synthesize very well or to scale on our own with all our technology is whack to me.

a man walked up and asked if he could socialize his dog around us, i said yes, then he tried to get me to pet him as well. i think the moral of this story is to only approach unattended animals from now on

Welp, today I made what was by far the worst mistake I’ve ever made in any job.

CW: Animal sufferingI missed a 0 when diluting insulin and accidentally gave a a bunch of rats 10 times as much insulin as they were supposed to receive. 3 died, 1 has recovered but had seizures before he passed out and has had a another since waking up, and 1 is still unconscious. I’ve spent the last 4 hours syringing sugar water into their mouths trying to keep them alive. I did mouth to mouth CPR on a rat.

.

Also, while this is fully my fault and I shouldn’t have fucked that math up, why the fuck is insulin measured differently from every other substance on earth? What the hell is a “unit of insulin”?? The hell do you mean this vial is 100 units per mL? Why is my final concentration in units per kilogram??? Just use grams you fucking weirdos! If insulin just had normal measurements this error wouldn’t have happened, and I guarantee I’m not the first person to cause problems because of that.

Like, at the end of the day I should’ve done better math. But if I’m engineering disaster style trying to figure out what parts of the system led to the problem and what to change to prevent it happening again, one of my suggestions would be to measure insulin the same way as every other substance.

I exclusively watch the PBS Kids educational cartoon series Elinor Wonders Why because it's the only show that hasn't been tainted by woke bullshit.

I just found out today that the new Futurama season dropped already.

Woof is it rough. I mean its not terrible, certainly no worse than the worst old futurama got, and its pretty funny at times but its got that... Hulu Original vibe that just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Sister went to her friend's wedding and just tested positive for covid. Despite having some significant comorbidities she hasn't taken it seriously since like 2021.

I've always been a stickler about masking and such so I feel vindicated in some ways but i also have no clue how this is gonna go. Hopefully we can get her Paxlovid'd up ASAP

Apparently Paxlovid would interact negatively with some of her meds, so they're holding off giving it to her for now. Not good!

Playing the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC.

I really, really hope the story is gonna turn at some point because this is shocking amounts of liberalism so far. I do not like this.

spoilerWe're saving the president?? And the president is a tough badass who doesn't bail on us at the first opportunity??

The main game had lib shit, sure. But there was literally a quest where the twist was that the politicians are literally mind-controlled puppets. It seemed aware enough to not portray anyone in a position of power as a "good guy".

I have some faith that they'll fix this, because there has been some text in this mission so far from disgruntled workers complaining about how the president is also corrupt. A bunch of things seem way too on the nose. But it's very disappointing to me how much of a fucking bootlicking rube V is so far, and Johnny Silverhand, who has frequently expressed his hatred for every powerful person in the main game, has been shockingly tame so far. V is not questioning her at all. The fucking president who has spent the past 12 years in space. She is the establishment. She commented on how she never wants to be in this part of the country again. THIS GAME IS CALLED CYBERPUNK.

I remain optimistic that there will be a twist and the president will be evil and hopefully we get to fucking shoot her. If that is not what happens, this DLC is astonishingly tonedeaf.

I'm addicted to these videos on Chinese tiktok where a guy buys a rock that is maybe like a blind box for gems or something, and then they open it with a saw and shine a mysterious flashlight at it and that apparently tells them it's a dud, because they throw it in the trash at the end. I'm not really sure what is going on or how there are so many of this same video, but the idea of throwing a rock in the trash just tickles my brain.
