Summary

Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the World Health Organization (WHO) on his first day back in office.

This marks the second time Trump has initiated this process, citing the WHO's "mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic," failure to reform, political influence, and "unfairly onerous payments" by the US.

Public health experts warn the move could harm global disease control efforts and US leadership in health innovation.

Under Biden, the US was the WHO's largest funder, contributing nearly 20% of its $6.8 billion budget in 2023.

Hope he's the first one to be eat up with it

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 62 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Because they made him look bad, contradicted him, and kept track of how bad the pandemic got.

It should be wildly apparent that trump hates oversight - anyone keeping track of anything he’s even tangentially involved or interested in - far more so if it makes him look bad.

Also, one of his principles is that ignorance is strength.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 1 points 23 minutes ago

War Is Peace. Freedom Is Slavery. Ignorance Is Strength

Well, that's just genius. Between things like this and Brainwormz, it's like he wants lots more Americans to die than the last time he was in charge, where he was the cause of more American death than any other single cause.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 1 points 34 minutes ago

He was put in to sabotage the US. Everything he does is to add to the chaos and further weaken legitimate institutions.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

This won’t cause more deaths in America, but mostly in developing countries. It just proves america is best.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I wouldn't rule it out hurting us as well. We are all connected, after all.

[–] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 23 points 20 hours ago

6.8 billion annually... Isn't that close to the daily defense budget? And 10 times less than Trumps shitcoin?

It sounds actually cheap, and US only paid 1/5 of that

[–] aggelalex@lemmy.world 81 points 1 day ago (3 children)

If it wasn't dead obvious the US is trying to kill its citizens just yet, it should be now

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 1 points 33 minutes ago

The US isn't. Trump and his fanatical followers are.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 26 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

But this + Musk's Nazi salutes + Brainworms' anti-vaxxer nonsense will lower the price of eggs!

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

...will lower the price of eggs!

Keep saying this

Need to keep refocusing on the dinner table issues. We know he likes to distract

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 10 points 20 hours ago

Problem is, bullshit like this also kills people outside the US borders - people who didn't get a vote in this but will be negatively impacted.

Presidents have lots of leeway in how treaties are implemented. Congress can challenge them on that, but they can't micromanage the process.

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.world 16 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

No it should be up to Congress, but executive has been encroaching on legislative and judicial powers for centuries to centralize power under the president to the point now over the last few decades they now use executive orders as short term legislative and judicial changes unrelated to civilian oversight of military, administration of the executive, or veto power over the Senate.

Doesn't matter, it's happening

So at this point it's apparent he learned nothing, and democrats genuinely thought they could force biden out, and we would just vote kamala in... Stupid pelosi, that's not the reason kids love cinnamon toast crunch!

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 11 points 21 hours ago

Dude, just stop. I voted for Kamala, I wanted Biden out because by the debate, it was undeniable that Biden literally couldn't do the job and we were actually being asked to vote for a corpse over a fascist. I mean, I would, but still, in the name of the Buddha. Trump came in and did more (awful shit that I disagree with) in the first hour than Biden did in his whole term. No getting bullied by his own party, no fretting about Congress or whatever, he just came out of the gate swinging. Meanwhile, democrats can't even make it off the launch pad and have to settle with reframing already existing stuff as a win, as in the case of student loans. If the democrats want to win, they need to give people a reason to show up besides "slightly slower slide into fascism"

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 13 points 23 hours ago

Republican learned plenty.

Their wealth skyrocketed from covid. And we demonstrated that we can pump money short term into pharmaceuticals so that the rich are safe.

They want another pandemic. But this time a never ending one.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Dems didn't force Biden out, voters did. He would have lost HARD.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Biden actually would have lost in a blowout. I think democrats not making any effort to reign in media and social media companies after the pandemic is the major problem.

+There is a point where failing to knock on doors paired with media blaring lies everywhere ends up with a world where like average swing state morons are voting for a leopard to eat their face because the dems are the real face eaters or something.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Biden took himself out by losing a debate to Trump

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 5 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Biden could have literally punched trump in the face and still been weak and old.

Because most of the country didn't watch. They read Twitter reactions.

And now we have people like you who will blame every fucking horrifying thing trump does on Biden because your social media is full of tankies.

[–] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Trump is to blame for his own actions, but as someone who watched the debate, holy shit it looked like Biden was dying onstage

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

Trump didn't even try to retaliate. It was literally punching down

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I watched it live. Biden was actively sunsetting in front of us. If he was my grandpa I would have been calling nursing homes that afternoon.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

And trump and vance said shit as insane as "concept of a plan".

The key is that (social) media keyed in on biden spending the first half of his debate passing out from chugging nyquil and just laughed at the "joys" of turmp saying stupid shit.

Social media is what won this. It is comparable to JFK vs Nixon back in the day where people who listened like Nixon and people who watched loved JFK. Except it is instead that people mostly just waited for someone else to tell them how to feel period.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

That debate would have been a disaster in any era since radio was invented, with or without social media

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Except it was only a disaster for one candidate.

Which is the point. trump can be literally dismantling the country from day one and people STILL talk about biden because twitter and their favorite compromised twitch streamers do.

THAT is the problem. In a rational world, we would have had the "turd and a douche sandwich" stupidity with how horrible both candidates were. Instead? BIDEN OLD!!!!!!! FUCK YOU BIDEN!!!

And if you don't think you are susceptible to being manipulated? Look in a damned mirror and do some soul searching because we all are.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Trump wasn't rambling on more than usual. He seemed reasonably alert. Biden was sleepwalking, talking nonsense and repeating "and by the way" a thousand times. If we're talking only about the debate, trump put on a much better performance and won by a wide margin. I don't need social media to tell me that, I saw it with my own eyes

[–] randompasta@lemmy.today 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Don't normalize Trump's rambling.

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 0 points 13 hours ago

That ship sailed years ago

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 26 points 1 day ago

Biden was polling significantly worse than Harris.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Damn, we have a projectionist as POTUS...
