If you want to explore the most toxic community on the internet, install Dota 2.

Appropriate reaction honestly

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 year ago

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Ah yes, the "if you don't know the hero then don't play it" game

[-] Fermion@feddit.nl 13 points 1 year ago

I too remember getting chewed out for randoming in an unranked match.

Now my friends exclusively play in private lobbies with bots.

[-] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Where gamers play to not have fun

[-] ristoril_zip@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 year ago

It's really sad considering how amazing DOTA was umpty bajillion years ago. Also Enfo's survival.

OpenTTD is a good time if you like those types of management games. The graphics are old, but it’s still fun.

[-] carrmcg@lemmy.world 30 points 1 year ago

If you find yourself enjoying openTTD, I’d highly recommend trying the JGR patch pack. Link It adds loads of improvements that the steam version doesn’t have. I started on the steam version, loved it, and love the JGR version even more.

[-] mihnt@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago

I caught a stream of TheSpiffingBrit playing it the other day and I downloaded it because of that. It's neat, but it does take some learning.

[-] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 year ago

My favourite OpenTTD gameplay video is the Valefisk video where he invites his Patreon supporters to play a game with him and his friends and then ruins their day by basically starting the server early so that his corp already has more money than the other players.

I'd throw in a vote for HoloCure. It's like Vampire Survivors, and even if you know nothing about Hololive, its pretty addicting.

[-] takenaps@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Will check it out, just stumbled into vampire survivors that game is awesome

[-] mana@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 1 year ago

As someone who doesn't follow vtubers, I can confirm Holocure is excellent, and obviously made with love. Every character has a unique playstyle, and the aesthetc is a nice departure from the gloom common to the genre.

The Looker was a funny parody of The Witness. Made me laugh.

[-] TheBat@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Apparently the creator of The Witness didn't like it because he's allegedly a pretentious twat.

[-] Taako_Tuesday@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago

Doesn't surprise me that he didn't like it. It lampshades how the themes of the original game are not actually as profound as he says they are, while also being way more fun than the majority of the original

[-] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

I just love the review of it that states, "if you like The Witness, you'll like The Looker, but if you hated The Witness, you'll love The Looker."

[-] RudeGryphon@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

The ending had me rolling. I didn't realize what was going on until just right before the reveal. Great game to check out because you can beat it in a couple hours

[-] evilgiraffe666@ttrpg.network 4 points 1 year ago

Do you have to have played the witness to get the jokes, or does it stand alone?

[-] addie@feddit.uk 5 points 1 year ago

It would still be a fun little puzzler, but it's very much a single-note satire, and a lot of it would come off as "lol random" rather than taking the piss out of The Witness. Which is also brilliant, love them both.

[-] RudeGryphon@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I've never played it. So I'd say no. I still thought it was great.

[-] HughJanus@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I pretty much just assume "Free To Play" games are full of microtransactions, is that wrong?

E: to be clear, I don't think microtransactions are an inherently bad thing. In fact, if people want to make games where other people with more money front the costs of development, I'm all about it.

What I hate is being reminded every 5 minutes that it has garbage skins that I can pay IRL money for.

[-] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

Yes, there are good games that are just totally free. I've enjoyed the hell out of both ΔV: Rings of Saturn and South Scrimshaw lately. Both offer things you can purchase, but you get the full experience without them.

[-] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Also there are several really good open source games which are obviously microtransaction free. OpenTTD from this list is an example and Osu!lazer and SuperTuxKart also come to mind

I could have sworn rings of Saturn wasn't free

F2P with microtransactions isn't inherently bad. Legends of Runeterra is that way and is maybe the best-done F2P model I've ever seen.

[-] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I know Holocure isn't, but my gut reaction to F2P is to steer clear.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

I have like 1000 hours in Warframe and only spent like 20$ on it. Even that wasn't really necessarily. You can farm shit and easily make enough of the in game money for what you need selling it to other players.

[-] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

Don’t forget about Frog Fractions! It’s a great experience.

[-] citrusface@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Frog Fractions

A fuckin journey that game is

[-] flathead@lemm.ee 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

thanks - to save other cheapskates' time - these are supported on Linux: Handshakes, OpenTTD, Cave Crawler

[-] RegularJoeJoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

Much appreciated!

[-] sebinspace@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

OpenTTD is just fucken.. -chef’s kiss-

[-] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago

I loved Alien Swarm, although it's like just one episode from a big game. It's disheartening it's still like that. This game has a potential, especially for coop gaming. Just no content to flesh it out.

[-] bionicjoey@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

I remember playing the shit out of Alien Swarm back when it came out over a decade ago. It showed a ton of promise. It's a shame they haven't really fleshed it out since then.

[-] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Alien Shooter and Zombie Shooter series are direct inspirations to this Valve's experiment. Idk if they are good on your platform or if they are meant to play together with others, but I liked some of these older entries playing solo. Maybe you'd like them too.

[-] LucasWaffyWaf@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

There was Reaction Drop which added more content and the Workshop for user made stuff, but even then the extra time it'll buy you is limited.

[-] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Wesnoth is pretty fun too.

[-] Landsharkgun@midwest.social 10 points 1 year ago

I'll add Endless Sky in there as well. It's an open-source spiritual successor to EV Nova.

[-] mihnt@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

Mushroom Cats is another one. My daughter loves it. Good way to kill 15 minutes.
