Both sides seek more preparation time for the highly publicized murder trial

The 26-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last month will likely not return to a federal courtroom until mid-February.

The indictment date was initially scheduled for Jan. 18, but after both parties agreed in a letter to the court, it was changed to Feb. 17. Before his federal indictment, Luigi Mangione was handed a criminal complaint detailing the charges against him.

On Wednesday, the prosecution and defense in the criminal case agreed to postpone court proceedings to give each party more time to prepare before trial. According to The Associated Press, prosecutors have said both cases will work on a “parallel track,” with the state trial predicted to begin first.

On Dec. 23, 2024, in a New York courtroom, Mangione entered a plea of not guilty to multiple state charges, including murder as an act of terrorism. Additionally, he faces federal charges brought by the U.S. Justice Department, including stalking and using a firearm to commit murder, with the death penalty as a potential outcome.

This article is from Jan 8. It's February now. The trial's in two weeks.

I don't get why this post exists.

As a reminder?

No one should forget.

the terror it infused on the streets of New York City

The terror was infused on corporate boardrooms. The streets never feared anything from the assassination.

Quite the contrary, it gave them hope that the end is in sight for our asinine health extortion industry.

The only streets in New York City that Luigi infused terror on was Wall Street and some surrounding ones.

Robert Paulson became a martyr - that's how he achieved a mythic status.

Luigi lived, and his relevance had increased because of that. If he'd died in a hail of bullets, the whole CEO killin and healthcare thing would have disappeared. His court case is (probably) going to keep bringing the injustice of US healthcare into the media.

The media immediately went silent on Luigi once the bigwigs realized everyone they talked to supported Luigi.

CNN worships Trump, they value ratings over everything.

Except when those ratings are for acting in self defense against mass murderers.

His trial will not be covered on TV, except to briefly announce the charges being thrown at him.

Just another day behind the Great Wall of America.

The next court date has been set for February 21.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/23/us/luigi-mangione-arraignment-new-york/index.html

As much as I'd like to believe it's a conspiracy, news organizations make money from clicks. There isn't much for them to monetize between now and February 21, so they're focusing on more immediate stuff.

If they can get good photos and text from the next court date, Luigi will get more coverage.

Edit: there have been like five plane crashes, one US inauguration, and major US wildfires since his last court date.

with the death penalty as a potential outcome.

This is how Trump alienates his base.

Conservatives went quiet, I am worried some already switched sides tbh

By the time this trial goes down it will another bullshit left right circle jerk.

Right and left "went quiet". And by that, I mean that most billionaire-owned media sources are broadly banning commentary.

I have zero reason to believe that conservative acolytes of St. Luigi have actually diminished.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 10 points 4 days ago

God willing degenerates on both sides stay united.

I never seen such unity before. It was beautiful.

He could rape their kids live on CSPAN and they’d line up to lick his asshole and thank him for the honor.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

lol Trump will just have to say something like “oh and people are saying folks let me tell you, Luigi, we don’t like this guy Luigi. Folks the things I’ve heard about Luigi from the smartest people. Really the best people have been on it and here’s the thing about Luigi. Not the best guy. Turns out we thought we loved him, we don’t love him. I don’t know what happens next I really don’t. It’s really not up to me, it’s a New York thing. New York doesn’t like me, New York doesn’t like Luigi; what can you do”

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 13 points 4 days ago (2 children)

the state wants two chances to convict?

hmm... double jeopardy

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The state (New York) gets one chance to convict, and the feds get one chance to convict. This is a notable loophole to double jeopardy that has been the court precedent for a while.

The feds don't have the jurisdiction to try regular old murders; there has to be some kind of angle that makes it a federal question. In this case, I think their using an alleged interstate bus trip as the hook for federal jurisdiction.
