Summary

Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered the DOJ to investigate private companies for DEI programs, potentially pursuing criminal charges.

Citing the 2023 Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action, she argues DEI initiatives violate anti-discrimination laws. The directive targets large corporations, nonprofits, and universities, with reports due by March 1.

Legal experts warn this move likely violates First Amendment protections, as courts have upheld employers’ rights to promote diversity.

Civil rights groups are expected to challenge the policy, setting up a major legal battle for the administration.

This is one of those times where we should apply the phrase "do not comply in advance". They didn't take legal action yet. Make them take legal action before the company changes policies. That's why I'm so mad at companies like Target that just folded immediately.

[–] CgH10N4Co2@lemmy.cafe 7 points 9 hours ago

In violation of what law? Lol. Investigate away, dipshits.

[–] WrenFeathers@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

What do you think the chances are that she’ll start with any one of these beauties:

1 Timothy 2:9-15

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness

1 Timothy 2:12-13

I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve

1 Corinthians 14:34-35

The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

They want to criminally investigate private companies for setting their own policies? Real small government and pro business of them. /s

[–] Atherel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 12 hours ago

No, they just need a reason to investigate any business they want without legal reasons.

[–] joekar1990@lemmy.world 215 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Oh look... An actual weaponized DOJ. Projection of drumps goals strikes again.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 42 points 18 hours ago

With the qons, it is always projection.

Always.

"she argues DEI initiatives violate anti-discrimination laws."

Up is down, wrong is right, black is white.

God I hate this country

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

We now live in a giving country where White makes right.

Well as long as your male.

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 68 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

Blessed are the silent

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 7 points 10 hours ago

policies relating to "diversity, equity, and inclusion" ("DEi") and "diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility" ("DEIA") "violate the text and spirit of our longstanding Federal civil-rights laws" and "undermine our national unity."

Thank God for Lemmy. Reading this made me feel like I was taking crazy pills until seeing your guys's comments. These people are straight up going full 1984 "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

[–] thann@lemmy.dbzer0.com 41 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Not discriminating against brown ppl is discrimination against whites!

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 22 points 16 hours ago

"When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 13 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

My attitude at this point is that the US is getting what it deserves, you want to be as racist as possible? OK, enjoy your destroyed economy, lost civil rights, and felon president who's just white enough to steal all your tax revenue.

[–] Screen_Shatter@lemmy.world 52 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

There are a lot of people living in the united states who don't deserve to deal with this racist bullshit.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 24 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Indeed. Most of us either voted directly against it, sat out, or voted for some useless third party. And as infuriating as the second two groups are - most people did not actively vote FOR this shit.

And then there are the people that are ineligible to vote like kids, who definitely don't deserve this shit.

[–] fitgse@sh.itjust.works 26 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Please do not forget that republicans have been actively disenfranchising voters and making it hard to vote. Not everyone who didn’t vote “sat out”; they were literally unable to vote.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago

Oh yes, I fully realize that.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Certainly. But an awful lot of these people stayed at home during the last election.

[–] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago

And an awful lot of them voted FOR this. I am marrying into an Hispanic family with some people who voted for Trump... who were then surprised when they were fired from their jobs immediately after he announced the DEI orders.

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 14 hours ago

The people it affects most are the ones who majority voted against him

Billionaires bought the election; enough propaganda, both via manipulated social media platforms and marketing in swing states, can buy anyone willing to be the stooge of private interests the presidency.

Most Americans don't deserve to suffer at the hands at such corruption.

[–] jwiggler@sh.itjust.works 79 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

We are living through the greatest constitutional crisis of our lifetimes -- maybe since the Civil War. The US has never seen anything happen like this domestically. We are rapidly moving toward the dissolution of the US and civil war.

If the courts do not prosecute Trump and Elon Musk, which is highly likely, the assault on EVERY federal service and source of funds will continue. "Throwing it back to the states" will cause the states to contract -- without confidence in any federal assistance or regulations, states will need to figure it out themselves -- and if they start seeing the federal government as something they need to protect their citizens from...well, why would they remain a part of that federal government? If the US government is completely unreliable due to the massive brain, experience, and regulation drain, what reason do states have to remain a part of that? Especially when the feds want to restrict speech and expression in the way they do.

And if the courts somehow slap down Elon and Trump and they are removed? Then we've got violence from the J6ers and likely more.

We very well might be witnessing the end of the US, as I see it. But maybe someone can offer some counterpoints

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 35 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The end of the US was on January 20th. We're just witnessing its death throes.

[–] Ghosthacked@lemm.ee 29 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

We're dealing with this because the union fucked up and didn't see reconstruction thru after the civil war.

We had fucking military bases named after confederate generals. That's enough to tell you the identity of this country.

When the next Civil War happens, we don't need any Biden fucking losers olive branching the losers. We've historically done this and what has happened so far? Next time the US beats the confederates, erase their fucking shitty culture of racism and hate.

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 9 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I think the message is pretty clear that the US experiment has run its course and the country just needs to split in multiple parts instead of trying to make things work between people with vastly different interests under the same umbrella.

Let the red States become the third world country they want to be.

Reconstruction failed because Lincoln made the mistake of choosing Andrew Johnson to 'reach across the isle' and then was assassinated. And his racist piece of shit replacement did everything he could to obstruct Lincoln's plans.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 16 points 18 hours ago

We know all the money is being siphoned off to Trump and his goons, and he's trying to destroy every agency, particularly the watchdog agencies, which is exactly what happened in Rome that lead to the fall of the empire. If no one is paying anyone to keep track of legal obligations you no longer HAVE legal obligations.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 7 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

I think you overestimate the proactivity of the average American. I mean this is the road the US is going down on, but it'll take them a while before things get that bad.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 17 hours ago

It's only been like two weeks and shit is already off the rails. This is moving at an alarming clip.

[–] jwiggler@sh.itjust.works 6 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Could you expound on that? I don't think average Americans will be able to stop what's going on because we are too busy with work, families, and entertainment. And if, by chance, we are paying attention to the news, the 24 hour cycle and social media algorithms put some new thing in front of our faces before we have the time to process what we just saw.

Do you mean states aren't going to be that proactive, so they won't break away?

Translation: Pam Bondi gets in line to lick Trump's ass

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 51 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Being a woman she should probably fire herself then.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 34 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, she's looking a little bit "DEI" herself, there.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 57 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This guy with 34 felony counts doesn't seem to know the law, what exactly is illegal? Eh, I guess it doesnt matter anymore, nobody is going to do anything about it until things get physical now.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 25 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

And if you get physical for the right side, you'll get a pardon. See J6, Daniel Perry, etc.

Edit: spelling

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Well ain't that just a little fascist and Nazi adjacent.

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 23 points 17 hours ago

You voted for a guy who said he'd be a dictator. Now he's a dictator doing dictator things. His not doing dictator things would be surprising, not this.

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 29 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Thank fuck they’re doing something about egg prices.

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 11 hours ago

I hope they find who keeps hiring all the chickens to work in the judicial department, so they can send them back to the farm.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 31 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

For what? It's not fucking illegal! Fuck!

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 17 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Well, it also was not illegal for the FBI to investigate J6, or the crimes that donvict carried out, etc....but here we fucking are.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 4 points 16 hours ago

I know... I'm just frustrated...

Man, you guys are going to have to fight to get your rights back.

And I don't mean campaigning. You need to stock up on staples and ammo...

[–] aarRJaay@lemm.ee 4 points 13 hours ago

What if her employer was ‘guilty’ of that. Would she lose her job if she were employed because of DEI?

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 9 points 17 hours ago

It's remarkable how rich white guys have co-opted laws that protect against discrimination of minorities to protect themselves from minorities. Almost brilliant in its mendacity, and depressing that the courts will absolutely support it.
