example of the lands lost due to the dawes act

The Dawes Act of 1887 was a post-Indian Wars law that illegally dissolved 90 million acres of Native lands from 1887 to 1934. Signed into law by President Grover Cleveland on February 8, 1887, the Dawes Act expedited the cultural genocide of Native Americans. The negative effects of the Dawes Act on Indigenous tribes would result in the enactment of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, the so-called β€œIndian New Deal.”

It authorized the U.S. to divide indigenous tribal land into allotments for heads of families and individuals, leading to a loss of 2/3rds of land (~100 million acres) over the next 50 years.

The law converted traditional systems of land tenure into a state-imposed system of private property by forcing Native Americans to "assume a capitalist and proprietary relationship with property" that did not previously exist in their cultures, according to historian Kent Blansett. The act declared remaining lands after allotment as "surplus" and available for sale, including to non-Natives.

Between 1887 and 1934, indigenous people lost control of about 100 million acres of land, or about two-thirds of the land base they held in 1887, as a result of the act.

The loss of land and the break-up of traditional leadership of tribes had such devastating consequences that many scholars refer to the Dawes Act as one of the most destructive U.S. policies for indigenous people in history.

Me when I get on one of those trams that stop in the middle of the street: it's just like those old movies

Ngl I've been using deepseek sometimes when I need to google something really specific, and tbh, it is decent at navigating the slop of the internet. The text it generates is whatever, but I ignore that and look at the links it pulled. The quality depends, but when I ask it weird financial questions it finds the relevant gov and institutional websites.

I hate how hard it is to search the internet now. So much crap.

Death Grips had such a legendary run & I got into them at the exact right time to see them live before the end, can’t even be that mad at it. Hope Stefan has many peaceful days ahead of him painting with his cat now that this chapter is over.

(Also if they changed their minds and decided to tour again once or twice just for fun & a little extra scratch that would be perfectly fine and acceptable, tee hee)

If we examine the skull of honkys, we can clearly see the bone is made of crackers and bleached flour

There's a new burger joint opening up around the corner from my place.

On one hand, I want it to be good. On the other hand, if it is good, that's just one less reason to venture out of my 5-block bubble.

Musk thinks he's uncovered massive fraud and that the social security payment system wouldn't be able to pass an audit. Which is incredibly funny because government payment systems are designed by CPAs and generally only do two things very well: issue payments without errors in record keeping, and pass audits. Like I'm sorry, if you go into an old school payment system and think you've found something that would fail an audit you probably need to RTFM. They're 100% pulling stuff from either the frontline staff facing part of the system (not the part that issues payments and records audit trails) or retrieving codes incorrectly. Which is like really easy to do with these types of systems, but also why you don't try to knock this out in a week with your dumbass interns.

Steven Universe: Unleash the Light got a rouge-lite update a while back, but I'm only looking at it now. It's a little unbalanced, but impressive considering they put it together out of all the pre-existing pieces of the game. Such a shame Warner Bros. pulled all the games from storefronts

Wish ICE would deport me yea

Not sure if it's the blue yeti mic, Audacity's usual shittiness on yoinking the controls, or bullshit from a Window's update, but after recording a song my computer refuses to aknowledge my headphones in settings and only plays from my screen. I really need to stop being such a dinosaur and move to Reaper or Garageband already.
