I found a super simple way to refer people to Lemmy.

One simple message:

Try out the Reddit alternative called Lemmy https://phtn.app/

It also has a mobile app: https://vger.app/settings/install

This way a user can just click, start seeing content and what Lemmy is about, and if they want to comment etc. they will be asked to create an account with lemm.ee selected as a default.

This should fix most of the onboarding UX issues, and eliminate the decision fatigue of trying to figure out which instance is best.

Don't recommend Voyager as a desktop client to new users. It just looks like a stretched mobile app, and the UX on desktop is piss poor. Just go with the default Lemmy UI, or Photon.

Fair I'll rather point to https://phtn.app/

Id say just recommend Photon. It works well on both mobile and desktop. I love voyager but two very different uis is going to confuse new users.

I use Alexandrite on my laptop and really like it

at that point why even say "the Reddit alternative called Lemmy"

you could say "the Reddit alternative called Voyager"

I like this a lot. Using lemm.ee isn't mandatory, as you can choose "pick another server" the moment you try to comment. For a moment I was wary that this would just send everyone to 1 instance.

I think their should be a list of prechecked instances that are randomly selected

[–] Konstant@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No. That will create more confusion. Keep it simple.

I mean it will say ”join [randomly selected preapproved instance here]” its no harder but it helps keep the fediverse decentralised.

[–] Konstant@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

I read it wrong. If it's pre-selected should be good.

It doesn't preselect, if I choose General and English I'm faced with a list of 18 servers to pick from.

Users will drop off like crazy here due to choice overload - https://lawsofux.com/choice-overload

Just select the first instance that shows up then.

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

That's bad UX, see the link in my previous comment

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 10 points 3 days ago

That's what I did! My friend still doesn't really use it though... :(

And we make it worse by saying "Just pick one. It doesn't matter what instance you're on because they're federated."

Some people are going to be very upset to find their local feed is a lot of content they don't agree with. Or when they go out into the fediverse and people automatically assume they're an A-hole because of the instance they're from. I mean, it's generally not that bad, but there are a few instances that are that bad.

And for people like me who gravitate toward smaller instances, that instance is probably gonna die. Happened to me twice already, 4 times if you count Mastodon and Peertube.

[–] AnonomousWolf@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

Exactly, if it doesn't matter then we can just pick a default for them. That's why I like my very simple message

[–] xnx@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

So many of those apps no longer exist
