In case people don’t realize. Canada shares an Arctic border with Russia and Russia is trying to take Canadian land and regularly crosses into our waters to steal resources. It is of benefit to Putin for Canada to be weak and distracted by Trump, since Trump works for Putin, it’s very clear why he’s doing this

Please remember that all this is noise to hide the great billionaire sacking of america. Smoke screen.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I genuinely thinks he also wants to annex canada though

[–] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

It’s very interesting that he is criminalizing climate change, while seeking to take over the lands that would benefit from climate change.

There’s another fella across the ocean that is accelerating climate change because it will benefit his country.

Great take. I agree. We know this from Project 2025. Keep an eye on it but don't let it distract. Trump and cronies are using a strategy coined flood the zone to prevent coordinated opposition against them in politics and media.

I hope that people in the Pentagon remember that following illegal orders is a crime, too, and you cannot be forced to do so. Something established in Nürnberg when they took care of the Nazis.

An order to attack Canada, Mexico, Greenland, or Panama would basically be such an illegal order.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 days ago

This is not the first time the US has made up bullshit in order to attack a country: WMDs in Iraq, communism in Vietnam, Russia said there were nazis in Ukraine to justify that war. The military only needs a lie and then it’s not illegal anymore. The lies are already circulating. “canada is communist” “canada hurts the US”

[–] CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 29 points 2 days ago

Lol the Pentagon isn't afraid to fake evidence to support an invasion. Remember the aluminium tubes? Remember yellow cake uranium? I remember.

[–] febra@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

When have illegal wars ever stopped the Americans?

I'm sorry but let's not forget that Iraq was a thing.

[–] PraxicalExperience@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm not sure it's technically illegal, and I'm very doubtful that the current judiciary would find it so. But it is unconscionable. And insane.

According to the US Supreme Court, a US president cannot be prosecuted for crimes (if they're related to their official duties, but whatever goes, I guess). This means that Canada is faced with the fact that they're being attacked by a foreign power with a ruler not beholden to the rule of law. If they give in, they're going to be conquered by a king who is not bound by a national constitution, legislative body, nor courts. This is an existential threat to their freedom as individuals with rights.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 192 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (11 children)

If they give in

lol, no. The US are about to rediscover why Canadians were so feared in the world wars. Canada literally exists because we didn't want to be part of the US. If you want Washington burned down a second time, keep at it.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 109 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Gotta go further south this time. Warching Mar-a-Lago burn will be fun.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 58 points 3 days ago

I'm down, I know the area well. We can call it the March of the Snowbirds.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 33 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Turning North America into Canada, South Canada, and Mexico would be a nice sight

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 51 points 3 days ago (3 children)

If it gives me single payer healthcare? I, for one, welcome our new Canadian overlords.

Well, that and also the fact that Canadians currently see the US as a severely indebted dumpster fire where the system is specifically designed to exploit and oppress its citizens for the profit of the few. A police state where cops can assault, rob, unlawfully imprison and murder anyone without repercussion, where your insurance company will deny you life saving treatments to make more money despite charging you twice what Canadians pay for their own health insurance through their slightly higher taxes, where the cost of education is absurdly prohibitive and social mobility is nonexistent, where it is legal to pay someone a salary that is not even enough to keep them lodged and fed while working over 50 hours a week on several jobs, where corporations can sell you food containing ingredients that are known to be harmful to your health, where religious zealots with belief systems that belong to the dark ages wield significant political power, where citizens are locked up for simple violations while rich people get away with murder, where entertainment TV shows can spew out pure disinformation while calling themselves "~~FOX~~ News" where Corporations are being given human rights that take priority over real humans and their political donations are considered "free speech", where any moron can buy a gun without even having a single clue on how to use it safely and where the violent crime rate is through the roof, all that while chanting about being the greatest country on Earth.

And that was before we even take Trump into consideration. But hey, he said we could keep our anthem because he likes it and that we'd pay lower taxes. So I guess that makes it worth it now?

I know trying to make sense of the stupidity that is Trump's "plan" for America is a lost cause. But why do they speak like turning Canada into a singular state makes any god damn sense??

Also, is war inevitable? I honestly don't know. Shit is not looking good. If war breaks out, I would find a way to flee and volunteer to fight on the opposing side. No way am I supporting my country on the wrong side of history.

[–] match@pawb.social 34 points 3 days ago

today seems like a good day to remember David Fagen, an American soldier who defected to fight for the Philippines against the American invasion and is remembered as a hero for it in the modern era

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 40 points 3 days ago (9 children)

The US could attack Canada and they could take our cities in Southern Ontario easily, however, that would instantly deputize everyone else and there would be tens of millions of insurgents fighting asymmetrical warfare forever more. We would also destroy all the assets the US sought to take from us cause Canadians are vindictive AF. If we can’t have what’s rightfully ours neither can US invaders.

[–] ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 37 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As a Minnesotan. I would never fight our northern neighbors. Fuck our government, nobody wants this except trump and his cronies.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 104 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

Thanks, now Canada can more easily commit to exporting its energy and resources to Asia and Europe.

Canada will outlive Trump.

[–] WrenFeathers@lemmy.world 35 points 3 days ago

Yeah. Hopefully Canada can completely detach from the cancer that my home country has become. And same goes for everywhere else.

For the greater good of the rest of the planet- everyone needs to cut ties with this festering disease of a “nation.” And I sincerely hope it happens.

We’ve been subjected to costs that we shouldn’t be subjected to. In the case of Canada, we’re spending 200 billion a year to subsidize Canada. I love Canada, I love the people of Canada. I love I have many friends in Canada. The great one, Wayne Gretzky, the great. Hey, how good is Wayne Gretzky? He’s a great one.

why tf does the media present this as anything other than unhinged dementia word salad

Is Quayle still alive? He’s gotta be pissed about the “potatoe” thing.

[–] devedeset@lemm.ee 38 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about in terms of "subsidizing" Canada. Either he has absolutely no idea how trade defects work or he's purposefully playing dumb since apparently Canada needs the US less than the US needs Canada

When the President of the United States says this shit, is it okay now to say - as a Canadian - that I wonder why more Americans aren't trying to kill him yet? Like, what the hell is going on? HE IS GOING TO GET US ALL KILLED.

[–] Gabadabs@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 3 days ago (9 children)

Do you expect the average American to just be able to stroll up to him with a gun and shoot him? We're literally a police state. He's got secret service watching him. It's complicated, and if somebody was successful they would be throwing away their own entire life guaranteed.

We won’t stop fighting against Trump until he is absorbed into the ground.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 41 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

STFU about this fucking petulant imperialist nonsense. 40 million insurgents is what this orange fuckface will get. US is not getting one fucking square CENTIMETRE of Canadian land. I used metric on purpose too. fuck the USA.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (10 children)

It'll be more than that. There'll be millions of Americans who won't stand for it either. To think of it though, that might be the point. Something so heinous, yet legal (barely), that it legitimately compromises our security and forces martial law and a state of emergency he can exploit.

Who the fuck is Trump to decide if we’re a sovereign country or not.

At this point: Death to Trump. Murder Trump. Eradicate Trump.

I’ll fight and die for this country.

TRUMP DESERVES DEATH!!!

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 49 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's incredible. Trump lost it a long time ago. He has no connection to reality. He's mentally disabled. Yet world leaders now have to seriously respond to the incoherent shit that falls out of his mouth.

And there you have it. It was never about fentanyl. It was always about annexation (i should just call it as it is and call it invasion). And that’s why there was never anything that Canada could do to stop the tariffs.

Not much i can do from across the ocean, except join in the boycott. But i’m boycotting anything American. Not just products of red states. I want to see America burn, and for Americans to lay the blame squarely on Trump, Elon, the Republican party and the 31% of Americans who are too stupid or racist to recognise a con.

[–] Mortoc@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Texan here. The boycott will help! The worse it is for America now, the better we’ll all be in the long run. Make Americans remember that we’re part of a global community.

I honestly hope this just fuels our country to find other, better, trade partners and to also bring in free trade between provinces.

He says the US doesn't need Canada, we should do the same.

[–] shawn1122@lemm.ee 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

He says the US doesn't need Canada but also wants to annex it.

The US absolutely does need Canada's natural resources. The Canadian people and its sovereignty stand between him / America and that golden goose.

If you recall the colonial era, when a stronger nation wants the resources of a weaker nation, it generally does not go well for the weaker nation.

Canada needs to accelerate the process of partnering with other nations now. It is never going to win a trade war against the US alone. Reciprocal tariffs are not going to cut it. Time to diversify the customer base and then tell the Americans to pound sand when they inevitably come knocking.

Canada is already the only G7 nation that has a free trade agreement with all other G7 nations.

I'm sure Ontario, Alberta, British Colombia ... will all be happy to lose their provincial legislatures for one State House. No local representation. All provincial systems of trade destroyed.

This is idiotic talk.

Good luck. We have allies and friends who still trade with us that we don't tariff. And as for all of this garbage from Americans asking us to absorb the US instead...

No. Fuck you. You made this mess, you clean it the fuck up. I would not want to touch your shitty country in a hazmat suit BEFORE this recent election. Your country is toxic waste.

If I suddenly stop posting forever in the summer it's because I saw someone wearing a Trump hat here in Newfoundland and proceeded to do some things to him that are very much illegal.

Note to any Americans coming to Canada though for any reason. Ditch the flags and hats and shit. We got tired of it a long time ago but I've outright seen people refuse to serve Americans so far who display any sort of patriotism and I kinda back them on it.
