He will run and the supreme court wont shit about it by citing some bullshit legal ambiguity. Democrats in the house will whine and then say they can't do anything about it while waving small little signs to show their indifference.

"The constitutional amendment only applies to Harry Truman"

[–] Daggity@lemm.ee 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Easy, the founding fathers didn't say anything about term limits.

[–] astro_plane@lemm.ee 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Have they actually tried arguing that constitutional amendments are unconstitutional?

[–] astro_plane@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Republicans are already ignoring constitutional amendments like separation of church and state with teachers having to teach the holy bible in Oklahoma. The right doesn't even need to rule something as unconstitutial the supreme court simply ignores them

The argument made for Trump being able to run for a 3rd term is that he didn't have two consecutive terms. The rule of law in this country is a joke. Nobody is held accountable for any crimes, if he runs nobody is going to stop him.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

OK I was asking in context of the founding fathers comment though

[–] astro_plane@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

The constitution is an living document. The founding fathers created it as something that changes with the times. As long as the law is amended to the constitution it can't be ruiled unconstitutional because it IS a part of the constitution. It takes a 2/3rds majority to amend the constitution and the president has to sign off on it though I think the pres can be sidestepped with a super majority vote. Amendments can be removed too with enough votes. If congress and the president decided that our government wanted turn into a monarchy then they would need to amend a monarchy into the constitution and they'd have to vote on removing term limits from the constitution. If congress decided that every one has a right to a free Nintendo switch 2 then that could be amenended too and then every american would receive a Nintendo switch. Anything can be amended!

Federal law isn't part of the constitution and the supreme courts can rule any law unconstitutional of it violates any of the amenents. Abortion was never amended and thats why states can get away with outlawing abortion while other states can allow it.

This system only works if the checks and balances are actually working and the laws are enforced. The founding fathers knew the system would break down one day and thats why we have the second amendment.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

OK but that still wasn't my question.

But don't worry about it

Right wing voters will vote for him again and leftists will step aside and say the democrats are just as bad

[–] 8bittech@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Third term is on the table? Obama should run that'd shut them up really quick.

[–] astro_plane@lemm.ee 17 points 6 days ago

He's too much of a boy scout to ever do that.

[–] O_R_I_O_N@lemm.ee 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

What i'd do to turn back the clock to Obama's era. I have my doubts now I'll even be alive for a better president

[–] Parptarf@lemm.ee 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I wonder where the republicans that take the constitution so litterally are right now? If I understand right, there's a difference between full on MAGA-cultists and actual replublicans. It's clear the democrats are worth fuck-all at this point so I'm keen to see if there are republicans with integrety. Or you know, the democrats getting their shit together.

Trump getting elected after this term will result in JD Vance becoming president, I'm almost completely sure of that.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

They're biting their toungs and waiting to hear what to think next

[–] nimble@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He's already old as fuck and declining. No way he'd be mentally fit to run in 4 years, let alone finish a 3rd term.

[–] Sidewalker@lemm.ee 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He wasn't mentally fit this time and that didn't stop the hordes of magas lining up to vote for him. I have no doubt that they'll be fine voting for the weekend at donny's version of trump.

[–] Zoboomafoo@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 days ago

This time they'll hook an AI trained on his posts and the gibbering of monkeys to Twitter and nobody will be able to tell the difference.

[–] Trilobite@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

Extra extra, 80 year old fat man thinks he is going to live 8 more years

[–] Wolverdiddlyino@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

Ok we get it. You want us to try something. Message couldn’t be clearer.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Show him the 2024 A24 Civil War movie... TV is the only thing he understands and that'll scare him straight

[–] Bristingr@lemm.ee 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I hate that A24 made a documentary of our near future.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They tried hard to focus on the moment and not "what lead to this"... but even so it was really on the nose

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I hated that movie...but god that ending...

magnificent

[–] PeteWheeler@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Cool.

Your party has proven that one can avoid taxes, but I don't think you can avoid death as well.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

Not on my watch. I actually meant that oath I took against all enemies, foriegn and domestic. Unlike Trump

[–] andallthat@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

trying hard to see the glass half full: it's good that he implies that there will still be elections

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

They'll be like Russian elections

[–] HalfSalesman@lemm.ee 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Technically, he could run as VP with the explicit plan to have the actual president step down as soon as they're in.

But I don't know if Trump would even be down for that. He just wants to run for a third term full stop.

[–] Podunk@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There is a part of the constitution that prohibits someone that has completed 2 terms as president from being vp afterwards.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemm.ee 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

My understanding is because of the way its worded that it could be generously interpreted by SCOTUS to favor Trump running as VP. I can't remember the specifics but I remember reading such.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

The 12th amendment prohibits anyone disqualified from running for POTUS from being VP. It’s quite clear.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 94 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I believe death by an AR-15 bullet is considered dying of natural causes in America.

Hopefully Trump dies of a natural cause, tonight.

So much for the "oh he's just joking" excuse

Remember when Obama was asked if he could run for a third, and he said he couldn't because it's not allowed. Imagine a President who respects the law, the Constitution, and the will of the people via Congress. Irony is that it was Republicans who put in place the term limits, so Trump is even against his party's previous mandate.

[–] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

I also remember republicans freaking out about how Obama was going to run for a third term and declare himself king even though there was absolutely no indication that anyone thought that was a good idea. He was just popular and they couldn’t handle it.

I’m sure the magats are eating it up. When are the rest of us revolting?

[–] jve@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I thought it was the magas who were revolting.

Oh, you mean like revolution.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Revolutioning? I guess I could have said starting the revolution.

[–] jve@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Naw, you were clear. I was just making a joke.

English is a silly language.

He will probably suspend the constitution soon. He will at least make a serious effort to have the entire thing suspended due to "far left radical insurgency" or too many "illegal aliens disrupting the political process".

Idk why he's talking about a 3rd term. I don't think anyone expects him to live out this one. He is very old. 4 years of being a fascist dictator might as well be a decade off of his lifespan. There's no way he'd be physically capable of running again. Being the most vile human being alive is actually very bad for your physical health.

They're just going to put his name on the ballot and run it through his hand picked judges. If we just go along with it, Elon will use Star Link to clean up the votes so he wins. Then the scotus will allow because he can't get impeached and the Senate won't convict.

Only solution is Luigi.

[–] DougHolland@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (4 children)

At the rate Trump's dismantling the Constitution, who really thinks there'll be elections in 2028?

What does he have to do to be taken seriously? It's like a man on an active shooting spree and everyone says "he's just kidding"
