Summary

Donald Trump defended his sweeping new tariffs—including a 104% levy on Chinese goods—despite market turmoil and a historic sell-off in U.S. Treasuries.

Speaking to Republicans, he claimed manufacturing is returning to the U.S., repeating, “I know what the hell I’m doing.”

China responded with an 84% tariff on U.S. goods, intensifying a trade war that tanked global markets.

The S&P 500 nears bear territory, and JPMorgan raised global recession odds to 60%. Critics warn of inflation, declining investor confidence, and deepening economic instability.

I've never heard a single person say "I know what I'm doing" and then a good result happened...

If you're in a situation where you need to say that to someone watching, shits already gone sideways.

It's the international call to get your phone and start filming.

The teetotaler's version of "hold my beer".

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 57 points 4 days ago

He does have a lot of experience running failures further into the ground.

I know the "imagine if Obama did it" is so very tired at this point, but - seriously, just imagine if it was Obama doing this.

Nothing screams "DEI hire" like a washed-up never-was who is only known for being a white male fail-son nepo baby who failed up his entire life, and known for multiple bankruptcies - who couldn't even make money with a casino - who is now fucking around with a Goldilocks economy and making it burn to the ground - all this, while his courtiers keep praising him and gaslighting the entire country.

If it was Obama doing this, I bet the people on Faux would be losing their minds so much that they'd probably just drop all the pretense and be using the n-word on the air.... 🤣

They'd be looking up bible verses and calling him the antichrist.

Edit: oh wait...

-says man who has no idea what he's doing

[–] SaltSong@startrek.website 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Narrator: he did not, in fact, know what the hell he was doing.

I mean, I'm not 100% opposed to some of the things he claims he's trying to accomplish. But I'm not what you'd call an expert on the topic, and I might have some bad ideas about how the economy works. But even if I'm not barking up the wrong tree, the things he's doing are not how you accomplish the things he says he wants to accomplish.

Why do we keep electing stupid old men to office?

Why do we keep electing stupid old men to office?

Because the majority of the USA is also stupid. Most people in this country lack proper education. Hell even colleges pump out degrees that are there to make money.

They're just illustrating their point there.

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No their not. There plane wrong and just mispelling things occidentally. You should learn 2 except when your wrong.

My brain hurts from writing that.

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

It didn't effect me at all, and now I no longer exist!

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Lol foot in mouth

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 7 points 4 days ago

It’s not just a lack of education. There’s a mentality that a lot of burgerlanders have that breeds arrogance and stupidity just at a base inherent level.

Media literacy is the key thing missing.

Too many "smart people" drank the fox news Kool aid, believing somehow that they were unbiased news...

Yes. Unbiased fox... The people that talk in terms of "we" when discussing Republicans/conservatives. The people that NEVER have one single good thing to say about a Democrat or "the left" unless it's because they were siding with Trump/GOP. The people who's only standard is "follow whatever the GOP is saying RIGHT NOW" even if that means contradicting what you just said a handful of weeks/months ago (Before election: Trump is the president of peace. Now: Maybe we should stop being nice and take Greenland by force if necessary.)

Unbiased... Riiiiiiight.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

This. It's simple propaganda and it's effective AF.

[–] invertedspear@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago

Either he doesn’t know what he’s doing, or he does and this is the desired results. Both options are terrifying for the future.

[–] pleasegoaway@lemm.ee 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The trump regime was designed to TANK the US economy so that stocks, businesses, and industries can be bought by billionaires at rock bottom prices.

All is going according to plan.

[–] theparadox@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Don't forget that when it crashes, they'll get to try to rebuild the system so that it's more stable for the capitalist class and workers have fewer rights and options.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

Following Putin's orders.

Why are we not talking about the phone call they had a month ago, hmm?

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Dude just walked back a shitload of tariffs for 90 days down to 10% except China.

Nobody knows wtf is going on.

[–] neclimdul@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

If there's one thing markets love more than tariffs it's uncertainty.

And it seems to have worked out for him pretty well. He lives an incredibly lavish lifestyle, won the presidency twice, has a huge collection of devoted followers, and generally seems to have avoided any negative consequences.

Between Trump and the people around him, SOMEONE know what they are doing.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

You forgot corruption. Corruption, I suspect, is what is "around him".

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Anyone who has to say ~~he's king is no king~~ he knows what the hell he's doing doesn't know what the hell he's doing.

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Orrrrrr, maybe just needs legislators to look the other way just a little bit longer, until the massive public unrest allows for martial law.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

The plan is "get the other countries to capitulate and offer me everything". This is a classic Mafia power play - strangle out trade for everyone, show how much power you can exert with one stroke of a pen, and then walk it back as a flex. The message is "give me everything I demand or I can strangle trade with your country from the US" - this unfortunately only works when your diplomatic position is good enough to get OTHER countries to agree to the same thing, like with Cuba or Russia (sorta).

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

How long until the market simply becomes immune to the back-and-forth tariff nonsense? I feel like at this point Trump is just a fucking moron and people are having to seize the wheel from him to prevent total collapse of the system. He hikes the tariffs up, then pauses them hours after they go into effect. The inherently contradictory goal of wanting to bring American manufacturing back to America while simultaneously using tariffs as a negotiating tool makes no fucking sense no matter how you try to explain it.

Is this all just trying to control the narrative that the economy is crashing as a direct result of his economic plan?

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 5 points 4 days ago

"Hold my beer."

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Translation: he doesn't have a fucking clue what he's doing.

[–] joekar1990@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Update he indeed doesn't know

He strikes me as a diet Coke and orphan blood kind of guy.

He does know what he is doing. He just doesn't care about anyone else. And he is basing his opinion that what he is doing will work out simply because everything else he has done has "worked out" to get him where he is. In the narrow scope of just him, his thought process is almost rational. But the world is bigger than him, even if he doesn't want to believe it.

I like it when people with the wheel ask us to have faith, I’m sur it will not bite us in the ass
