Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

On this day in 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion took place when a force of 1400 Cuban exiles, funded and led by the U.S., landed on the southwest coast of Cuba in a failed attempt at overthrowing the revolutionary Cuban government.

Covertly financed and directed by the U.S. government, the operation took place at the height of the Cold War and its failure led to major shifts in international relations between Cuba, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

The coup attempt came after the Cuban government expropriated property from American capitalists. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower allocated $13.1 million to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in March 1960 for use against Castro's government. With the aid of Cuban counter-revolutionaries, the CIA proceeded to organize an invasion.

On April 14th, 1961, a squadron of U.S. B-26 bombers camouflaged with Cuban insignias begin a two-day bombing campaign of Cuban airports, destroying a large portion of the Cuban air force.

On the night of April 17th, an invasion force of approximately 1400 Cuban exiles and CIA officers landed on the beach at Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs. After a few days, the insurgents became overwhelmed by the Cuban army. President Kennedy refused to provide air support for the operation.

The invasion's defeat solidified Castro's role as a national hero and strengthened Cuba-Soviet relations. Several Cuban exiles and two Americans were executed upon capture. Over 1,000 prisoners were exchanged for humanitarian aid from the U.S. government.

Tinfoil I just came up with after S2E2 rewatch of the Wire: Frank ask the Greeks(Spiros) what's in the cans(shipping containers) after going through a list of guns, drugs, vodka BMWs Spiros says 'Bombs, maybe bad terrorists with big nuclear bombs'

Now I can't remember the episode but there's a bit in the Sopranos where Tony sees a 60 minutes(or equivalent) about terrorist smuggling nuclear bombs in shipping containers EDIT googled S5E10 released May 2004 so possibly filmed 2003

Was this an actual idea floated at the time? cause I haven't heard of it irl, just strange that two similar(east coast crime shows that are constantly) compared) have this specific plot point(even if it is throwaway in the wire, in TS tony asks Chris about his middle eastern credit card skimming contacts and if he thinks there 'Al-Queadas') the wire season is set/filmed during 2003,

So was this Cheney's plan b if the ra-ra-americana generated from 9/11 wasn't enough to see through the Iraq invasion?

jk but you never know lol

IDK how well, or if, you remember the Bush years, but the media was constantly running speculative stories about "possible" terror plots. I do vaguely remember some stories about safety at the ports from the time.

Pretty well, yeah I remember stuff like seal your windows up cause of anthrax, some recollections of dirty bombs being brought up but not an actual fission/fusion device ever floated outside of Iran hysteria (but with that the implication was always ICMB delivery)

Ah here we go https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Iraq_Group interesting read , I knew I'd heard 'We don't want the smoking gun, to be a mushroom cloud' somewhere

New POS system at work is fucking killing me. We have a touchscreen monitor bullshit thing AND order chits. So doing expo I have both to deal with, the touch screen system is absolutely trash. No way to re-arrange orders. Anything classified as an app comes as a separate item to the mains even if it's rung in together or a fucking takeout order. Takeout orders don't show up until 20 mi uses before they're due so when we get a lot of takeouts during a dine in rush were gonna be totally fucked. It's super easy to accidentally click the wrong item, especially if 2 tables want the same thing, so people are getting served out of order. Also it's a bright white screen and the orders have a border on em that fucking flashes black and yellow. I can think straight with this thing in my face flashing lights and shit all day. Fridays have been ridiculous lately even with a familiar system, tomorrow it's gonna be me on that cross.

I'm sometimes tempted to restart Pokemon Scarlet and go for an all-bird team. Only issue is I don't care much for the gameplay.

Seriously, I love bird Pokemon. That rockabilly parrot rules.

Been cooking more veggies like roasted cabbage and brussel sprouts (smaller cabbage) and I think it's been helping my mom out. Her knees been hurting so dieting is helping, taking the approach of getting full though by eating more veggies. Both of us got poor impulse control so restrictive diets are difficult but this is a good work around

I'm thinking about logging out, permanently. I don't want to get got just for having the "wrong" beliefs.

Is anyone else feeling this way more and more?

I've heard that if you quit social media abruptly, it flags you as a risk to anyone who might be monitoring you. Is that true?

I literally just want to put my head down and ride this shitstorm out.

A migraine ruined most of my day. I had such plans for games or music and stuff. Could obviously be worse, especially since it was a small one, but even so.

[–] Kolibri@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

really getting tired of almost falling asleep and minutes later when I turn in my bed, I start to actually shake and I curl up, my blood starts pulsing fast and my breathing goes faster. it's frustrating since it tends to happen when trying to falling asleep, and then that happens and it fully wakes me back up.

Feeling down all over again. Staff being stretched thin again meaning 6 days a week at around 50 or so hours for the next 3-4 weeks, maybe more. Makes me feel worse about how no one really wanted to hang out when I took a few days off a couple weeks ago. Now I'm back to barely having any time to even do things by myself, in particular going to the gym. Shit's depressing.
