Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news.
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Is anyone else really really scared by the world at the moment? It feels like everything is spiralling so quickly

[–] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 38 points 18 hours ago

I'm not, you gotta kinda genuinely unironically slightly embrace the "Nothing ever happens" mentality if you don't want world events to fuck with you too much.

[–] Moss@hexbear.net 40 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Like the world is getting worse and worse and I'm just supposed to do what? Study for my exams? Clean the dishes? It's so insane

Until social structures become too contradictory to keep in place, thats all you can do really. Maybe do some prep.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 11 points 15 hours ago (6 children)

You can prepare by building a communist party

Something that struck me about 2020 and the war in Ukraine is how normal life stayed beyond the initial lockdown phase.

You wake up, go to work, even if you might catch a disease that might leave you disabled or worse or if tanks roll down the street, shooting at everything that moves, you return home and repeat.

[–] SamotsvetyVIA@hexbear.net 21 points 16 hours ago

This happened to most of my (Palestinian) friends in 2023.

The feeling is called anomie

If anyone was wondering the reason for the Oreshnik missile threat: Starmer, Macron, and Merz are in Kiev for talks on the "coalition of the willing" to potentially enter the war against Russia. Clearly Russia sees this as a serious threat this time.

I think they are orchestrating the coalition stuff, the 30 day ceasefire demand, and Trump's sanction threats to create a situation where there is no easy response for Russia. They can either accept a defeat, or lash out and look like the bad guy.

[–] kittin@hexbear.net 35 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Coalition of the still won’t have any artillery pieces left

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 13 points 15 hours ago

Or tanks, or planes, or air defence

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 6 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

An Oreshnik fired on Kiev city itself would be a mass casualty event. 36 sub munitions designed to provide blanket coverage over a large target such as airbase, would cause large amounts of damage to a city block.

Could hit an airbase with it though, Ukraine is set to receive more F-16AM variants (block 15) from European countries, with long term support, including spare parts, provided by the United States, from their inventory of long retired F-16ADF (also block 15) in long term storage. Ukraine is set to receive a total of 85 F-16A variants under this plan. This was announced shortly after Ukraine signed the natural resources extraction deal with the United States.

What do you mean? Can't Russia just keep grinding towards victory on the battlefield? They have the upper hand, and sanctions are ineffective

The Oreshnik threat is there to remind Starmer et al, that there is no victory on the cards for the West if there's real escalation

Not that Starmer et al are rational actors

"coalition of the willing" to potentially enter the war against Russia

Like, boots on the ground or just keep funding ukraine's military? I can't really see them doing the former

Abu Mazen attended victory day and Netanyahu didn’t 😂

How will India vs Pakistan play into WW3? Is Pakistan part of the Axis of Resistance?

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 48 points 22 hours ago

Both governments are friendly with the US. For once, I'd say the US has a pretty strong reason to try to de-escalate this conflict before nukes fly. Whether they will, who knows

Also, India has pretty good relations with Iran.

And anyone remember this? chomsky-yes-honey

Let's see how much sovereignty he will allow that "state" to have. It is probably intended to be the zionist Manchukuo. I will be surprised if they'll even be allowed to have a football team.

Trump’s foreign policy is the equivalent of throwing a couple darts at the map on the wall and seeing what sticks

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 49 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

Palestinian state without Hamas and more nations joining the Abraham Accords was the details in the article. He could tie it into the "Palestine becoming an American protectorate" idea Trump has, Palestine is a state, but administered by the USA.

[–] inTheShadowOf@hexbear.net 23 points 21 hours ago

That's so grim. To make it through decades of genocide and abuse only to end up in a situation like that. I don't want to lose hope that a path to autonomy exists.
