Salmon. It might actually be my favourite overall. Delicious.

Bison/buffalo burgers are delicious.

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

+1. It's like beef but leaner and more flavorful.

Quail is pretty good.

As a 10 year vegan, the meats I miss the most are gator tail and venison

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

What's gator like? Chicken?

[–] MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I had gator recently that was a plain fillet and not a fried nugget or something like that. I thought it was like a cross between chicken and a meaty fish. It tasted like chicken, but there was a slight sponginess and the way it pulled apart reminded me of fish

Sponginess is a great word for it! I wanted to describe it as kind of fluffy, but that felt not quite right

[–] TherapyGary@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It's been so long that my description might not be reliable, but I remember it as a slightly fishy, gamey chicken, but much softer and juicier than other game meats

Gardein's "ultimate" plant based chick'n nuggets already taste kind of fishy IMO, and I've found that soaking them in dill pickle juice before cooking makes them taste a lot like I remember gator tail being like

Duck. πŸ¦†

[–] CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I like duck if it's done properly, but eat kangaroo more often.

[–] CetaceanNeeded@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Kangaroo has to be done right. A good kangaroo roast can be better than lamb or pork.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Ostrich. Easily the best game meat. It’s incredible.

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Horse! It's actually probably just my favourite meat in general even including the others

[–] brap@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I imagine horse is a lot like beef as Tesco got away with using horse meat in ready meals for who knows how long.

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Hah that one was funny :3

It definitely tastes distinctly different.. or at least from what I had, I assume tesco meals don't taste much of anything in general tho

[–] brap@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Generic salty brown mush haha. But seriously I’ve never had it so am intrigued.

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a very lean smooth meat.. it's like.. not as gamey as something as beef, but still with that distinct red meat taste. It's rather interesting :3

[–] brap@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Then I shall keep my eyes open for it and surprise the family one day.

Probably venison and/or wild boar (if you don’t count the latter as pork). My partner’s parents are hunters and they’ve given us some excellent boar steaks and self made game sausages before.

[–] TheWeirdestCunt@lemmy.today 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Venison is great but the markup is insane. In Scotland deer are hunted to stop them from destroying entire forests and the meat is sold to restaurants at a loss just so that it's used for something. Then those restaurants inflate the price massively because it's "exotic"

[–] accideath@feddit.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

It’s not as bad here in Germany but knowing hunters does pay off.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

mine is bork. it is a secret third meat that is neither beef nor pork.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago

beyond beef 😝

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Venison probably. Boar is also good.

On poultry, I'd go turkey over duck. Not keen on goose, too fatty.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think I've ever had "good" turkey so I would put it at the bottom of my poultry, goose is definitely fatty but I consider it like the wagyu of poultry. Duck is in the middle but still more decadent than chicken. Squab is near the top as well.

[–] morgunkorn@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Duck is amazing, either Chinese style (Peking Duck) or French style (Canard Γ  l'orange)

You missed all the great seafood!

My top 3 instant guaranteed to get my mouth watering foods are:

Vietnamese clay pot catfish (braised & caramelized)

Boiling Crab shrimps (Cajun-Asian seafood chain)

Hunan steamed fish (with salted chilis)

That's not meat.

It's okay if you don't eat meat, and it's okay to just say that; I'm just more annoyed at the whole trend of "meat substitutes" when you can just... not eat meat.

Tofu is an awesome ingredient, used in an incredible variety of dishes. To reduce it to something it isn't trying to be is such a waste of a good ingredient.

Tofu is tried and true and super versatile.

Learning to cook seitan feels like a veritable lifehack the first time you experience turning 2 cups of gluten powder into a massive bounty of sandwich slices.

Things like Beyond (ideally their avocado-oil versions) are a bit too pricy, but a nice change of pace when they go on sale. They're good for those random burger cravings. Same story with those breaded Gardein patties.

Soy curls are a miracle.
