For the self-conscious: Cashiers generally don't give a fuck about your declined card and probably see declined cards many times a day. It's not worth their time to judge you, is what I am saying. If anything, they are just as broke as you and are quietly sympathizing.

Isn't that the point of the meme? "Yeah, I've been there..."

Also, I've had various cards decline 10-20 times over that last decade and not once was it due to not having funds on that account. The majority of the time it's using Amex where not supported. Or entering the wrong pin. Or me not seeing the sign that said debit only. Or me forgetting I had cancelled that card already.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

All my declines were due to insufficient funds. XD

[–] gerbler@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Most systems will specify if it's insufficient funds so they will at least know it was declined for some other reason. As for insufficient funds, I don't judge (especially in this economy) but most often it's because they have the money but just need to transfer it between accounts or whatever.

Chip cards are the worst! 1000 questions and then I still need to use the pin anyways, and then it takes 60 seconds to process. I miss swiping and being done with it.

I miss just getting an imprint of the embossed lettering with slide-guitar pen and a carbon load.

[–] cdf12345@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Exactly, everything is broke. You, them, the chip in your card, the card reader, society. Just an average day.

This is that stupid mentality of being judged that makes people spend more than they can afford and get into debt, because "I cannot look poor"

My Amex platinum got denied at a ritzy area. She just said try inserting and it worked no fuss or anything.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

As someone who's been on both ends, yup.

There’s also the fact that chip readers are shit and might error out a good card anyway.

I love the array of hacks that pros use on order to get that good scan. Cleaning, using a tissue sidecar, many-swipes, etc.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 1 points 11 months ago

Don’t forgot the classic “turning it off and back on again”

"What!? There should be plenty on there! This is a complete surprise to me!"

[–] XbSuper@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Tbf, this has actually happened to me a few times.

This is just the default face we have in the Midwest USA.

My face when my card is declined.

especially since you already have the drink in your hand

What's worse I find is self-checkout's (at least in the UK) require a member of staff to clear your failed payment. Like, there's no reason it couldn't just go back to "Try again", instead the light goes red, the single person who has already approved your over 18 purchases, your brought your own bag alert, etc. has to come back on their route of 40 self checkouts to check that you have in-fact not got enough money on your card, and then to stand next to you (or worse, bugger off to someone else) for you to try again or use a different card. Argh.

if you accept the offer for one month free of amazon prime with an order and then turn off you card so that it declines the order you get to keep the free month of amazon prime or until you mess with you payment options again.

the more you know!

[–] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

I recall Amazon Prime letting you keep the benefits until the end of the term you paid for if you cancel. They just don't want you to know that while you're trying to cancel.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Oh man, happened to me today. It only worked at different register on 6th attempt.

Edit: But only one of them was actually "Payment declined". That's because the terminal required me to remove the card and swipe it, which I got blocked at the bank, so it obviously declined. The rest of errors were "Terminal payment not accepted" and I have no idea what it meant by that.
