Hi, I just want to be sure because it seems like the rules have changed about this topic and I don't see anywhere where it's explained clearly.

One month ago I posted a meme uploaded on ImgBB just fine. Today I did the same thing and my account has been immediately banned. I contacted the mods via mail and one person was kind enough to reply almost immediately and unban me, which is cool and you guys running the instance are awesome.

That being said, I'd like such an incident not to occur again. So, can I have a recommendation about image hosting sites that won't get me banned? Is Imgur safe? Catbox? Are there other alternatives? I'd rather not upload pics directly on lemmy.world servers.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately ImgBB has been previously used to post CSAM on Lemmy so the admins may have adopted some kind of automatic filter for that site in particular. So really anything besides that should be fine, Imgur is good afaik.

Imgur is good. Simply said any good moderated image hoster.

what’s the specific issue uploading to the instance?

I was told that it'd be preferable to upload elsewhere and give a link, because otherwise I'd be uploading junk on Lemmy.world servers that they have to pay for.

Not something I was aware of but I get the logic. On the flip side, if its an issue for lemmy.world to have to pay for image hosting then they could easily turn the option off and require users to submit images another wayv

I have found catbox to be reliable, if a bit laggy for video formats. Don't expect peak performance there and be sure to optimize the content as well as you can. Otherwise, it works great.
