If I used windows, I would totally do this....

Or use 7zip like any sane person

[–] Sorse@discuss.tchncs.de 46 points 8 months ago

But still buy winRAR for the meme

[–] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 29 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I’d buy winrar just because it has served me very well and all for free, for at least a decade even if I use mostly 7zip now. They earned that license fee

[–] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 18 points 8 months ago (1 children)

If I win the lottery they both get some.

And donate a ton of money

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 14 points 8 months ago (4 children)

on windows I use peazip because I can right click context menu > extract to smart new folder - does 7zip do that? if so I'd switch back

[–] towerful@programming.dev 9 points 8 months ago

I dont know what a smart folder is.
But you can extract to ./[archive name]

[–] adamantris@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Depending on what you mean with "smart", when I used Windows 7zip also offered to extract into a new folder through a context menu

[–] IndefiniteBen@leminal.space 14 points 8 months ago

In this context (IIRC) smart means "if this zip contains a single folder with contents, directly extract that folder, but if the zip contains files and/or folders, extract all that to a new folder named the same as the zip file".

Some people zip folders while some people zip the files in a folder. Smart extraction just handles both automatically.

Or gzip like the sane linux person

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

Software pirates still love it for some reason. You'd think they'd use non-proprietary archival programs.

[–] ares35@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago

recovery records are an essential feature for.... uh.... certain 'distribution methods' about which we are forbidden to speak of.

Once I found 7zip, WinRAR was obsolete. Lately though I've just been using the built in extractor in Linux because it works just fine.

[–] Pantherina@feddit.de 45 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Every linux archive manager is better than windows crap.

  • mark multiple zips and extract, they all extract. Windows doesnt do that, it extracts one
  • fuck "open in new window" windows that is horrible UI and only works well on tiling window managers lol
  • allows to use ANY archive format
  • allows to extract and delete in one go, the most commonly used action
[–] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago (2 children)

It really is amazing that even the worst linux ones are better than like everything on windows. I find fileroller so much more annoying than Ark, but if someone ported fileroller to windows it would probably be the best thing available by a huge margin

Windows Explorer can now open other types of archive, but it's really slow about extracting at least some of them compared to 7zip.

[–] EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 42 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Why would I waste money on winRAR when 7zip is open source and free right there?

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 23 points 8 months ago (4 children)

7zip is just so far superior in every way, it's crazy people use anything else imo.

[–] Crack0n7uesday@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

Better compression, password protected files, better speeds. So many features.

[–] w2tpmf@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Peazip is also good for the same reasons 7zip is.

[–] EmperorHenry@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 8 months ago

Lots of other software makes use of 7zip, because it's open source and free and you don't need to pay to be allowed to integrate it into your own software

[–] ftbd@feddit.de 2 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I just use gzip because it's built-in

It's really sad honestly, there's so many alternatives to WinRAR and no one dares uses them.

I didn't know about 7z, but I had been using WinRAR for years and I was in a position to contribute.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 29 points 8 months ago (3 children)

I'd probably try to keep a lottery win quiet. I don't want relatives I don't like crawling out of the woodwork clamoring for my money.

I mean, I wouldn't give them any regardless, but I just don't want that hassle.

[–] SuperSpruce@lemmy.zip 5 points 8 months ago (2 children)

If I won the lottery, someone would notice something seriously wrong when they see someone who was previously poor buying brand new motorcycles, a sports car, a house, and donating a crazy amount of money to open source.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 4 points 8 months ago

For me, I'd be paying off the mortgage and buying new IT gear for my home, and setting myself up with passive income so I don't need a job anymore.

If it was enough of a win, I may buy a new property and rebuild my house on it.... Making a few small additions and renovations along the way. Stuff we already want to do, but don't have the money for... The only big benefit would be that the house would be built on quite a bit more land than my current home. The lack of land was one of the things I wanted that I had to give up because of the other requirements we had, so being able to get what we have (which we need) and a bit more land would be perfect. Sell this old house and move into the new one.

Beyond that, any money I have left over would probably be spent to pay off friends debts and mortgages.... One friend is still renting. He's in a great place and his current rent is well below the average for his area, but the land owner is an older lady, and I would want to ensure he has the same security for a place to live as I have. I'd probably try to buy the place from the lady at market cost, and she can stay renting there as long as she likes, at very low rent, just as she has afforded to my friend for all this time.

When she decides to depart, instead of renting the place again, I'd renovate it, and gift the whole house to my friend. He would go from occupying a small basement apartment to owning the whole house. From there he can either take over the whole home, or rent out the upstairs and keep things as they are. It's up to him.

I have a few other ideas but I haven't even played the lottery in a long while.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Only if you continued to live in the same place.

I would lay down a good false trail. For the 6 months it'd take me to quietly setup trusts and discreetly get the money. I'd be telling everyone and convincing them I'd gone full on prepper and was moving to Montana and prepper compound there. My "new" car would be from the 70's so it'd work after the EMP blasts. Stuff like that.

One day I'm gone and they'd be like that crazy guy did it....

[–] Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Depending on the state it could be hard, California makes it all public.

On Windows, NanaZip is even better. It’s a fork of 7zip focused on performance and UI improvements.

WINDOWS MENTIONED 🪟🪟🪟 WHAT THE FUCK IS STABILITY ⁉️‼️⁉️‼️⁉️‼️⁉️

WinRAR. It’s really whips the Lammas ass.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 12 points 8 months ago

Who is still using WinRAR?

[–] Zozano@lemy.lol 12 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I might be one of those odd people who wouldn't hide it, since I have no problems with telling family members to fuck off if they're cunts.

Family is who you treat like family. Just because this person is part of your family, and you're part of my family, that doesn't make them part of my family.

Besides, I would really love the idea of pissing some of them off.

[–] Owljfien@iusearchlinux.fyi 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You can tell them to fuck off, but they still may make nuisance of themselves doing frivolous legal shit with no standing that's just annoying to deal with

[–] Zozano@lemy.lol 9 points 8 months ago

Jokes on them, I love playing "who's more petty?"

[–] abcd@feddit.de 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I am in this picture (but I didn’t win the lottery 😢)

[–] furycd001@lemmy.ml 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)
[–] abcd@feddit.de 4 points 8 months ago

Yeah. After using it for me than a decade it was about time 😂 I like getting paid for my software too so why not give it back. I had to pay much more money for a lot shittier software in my live. Winrar at least just works.

[–] indepndnt@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Does WinRAR actually still exist? Is it in active development?

[–] Kenny@feddit.de 11 points 8 months ago

Yes and yes. They just released WinRAR 7.0.

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I heard the original developers still personally call and eagerly thank every individual registrant. It's not that many calls.

[–] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 15 points 8 months ago (1 children)
[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I hope I didn't inspire the purchase, because it was just a joke.
