It could be cool to have a fediverse alternative for IMDb or Letterbox. I used to track/rate movies and episodes of a show I'd watched on IMDb (the episodes mostly so I knew where I left off) but no longer want to deal with websites stuffed with ads. Would love to see something like this for the fedi but haven't come across anything.

This has come up a few times. I'm just drawing my notes together on previous discussions but in summary:
- The BookWyrm devs reckon it would be easy enough to alter their code for other uses but they don't have the time.
- There are occasional posts about folks looking for similar services for film and TV, vinyl and music, etc.
- I think it might be worthwhile first creating a more modular GeneralWyrm (with a wyrm/worm wearing a general's hat as a symbol) that could then be modified for other uses: ScreenWyrm, MusicWyrm, ActionFigureWyrm, etc.
Features for a ScreenWyrm would include:
- Standard IMDb/Trakt features like voting, reviewing, etc.
- Lists - with the option to import from IMDb/Trakt
- Something like Trakt's Kodi tracker
- Release calendar for movies and TV shows. I currently use something (Episode Tracker?) to bring TV shows into my calendar app but it isn't really fine-grained enough for me but it's good enough for now.
I wished I got notified for such a message. I'm not a developer myself but I'm sure I could find some skill that would be useful to help at that. The ground code is layout and you layout a plan. You even have a mascot. Soon or later it will happened.
Were did you hear about the BookWyrms reckoning ? On GitHub ? Lemmy ? Mastodon ?

Yeah, there is a need for this, at some point the idea will gain enough traction. I keep jumping into discussions as it helps me spread the word and it is useful for firming up my ideas.
BookWyrm is written in Python which I don't know enough about to start messing with the code but I have been assembling my thoughts, making notes and it should mean there's planning done to make this work.

If this idea started to gain momentum, I'd have a word directly with the devs and see if there are any tips they'd have.
BookWyrm is written in Python
Python ? That's even more popular than Rust. I agree with you and @BruceLee@lemmy.ml. This is gonna take off sooner or later.
I'll keep an eye on this topic for sure.

Indeed. One of the problems with Lemmy (and now Ibis) is that it is coded in Rust and there are a lot less people out there who known it compared to something popular, like Python. It's why I have high hopes for this. It feels almost inevitable at this stage.
The main issue I forsee is an enthusiastic CCG fan hacking BookWyrm into CardWyrm but it wouldn't help the rest of us and that's why I am trying to steer things in the direction of GeneralWyrm because this idea has come up in relation to a BookWyrm for films or TV or vinyl and can be extended into pretty much anything collectable (Funko Pops, dolls, action figures, baseball cards, etc, etc), so making a modular GeneralWyrm that would provide people with a base to add in specific things for whatever the specialism is (like a TV tracker as suggested here).
Too bad.
What would be the purpose of connecting such a list to the fediverse?
I guess this could like create communities in lemmy which would be the books and posts as threads. Kind of like a way to have lots of niche communities about these books that (hopefully) will be somewhat-active. Actually a good idea if you ask me.
If I have the time, I might try to do an anime tracker that works like I described above in summer.
Same as bookwyrm, presumably. For people to share their activity and opinions on different shows and actors.
Share your recent view with your friend and do the kind of connection social media allow around the theme of tv series and movies.
I have to admit than I almost never use these functionalities in my current tracker but most of online tracker option include them so I guess that there is a public for it.
I don't share my Bookwyrme reading on Lemmy either but maybe one day if it comes in the conversation, I could point to the right book through some integrated reading note rather that a link to amazon or somethin'.
not an alternative to tracking the shows but libremdb is a imdb front end you might find interesting.
Thank you.
I would absolutely LOVE that !
