The archipelago, roughly the size of New Jersey, produces one-third of the world’s nickel and holds around 11% of the world’s total nickel reserves. According to GlobalData, it produced 193,600 tons of nickel in 2023 out of 3.3 tons globally. Nickel is key to producing batteries for the electric car industry

The first statement in this sentence isn't correct. New Caledonia is the third largest producer in the world (roughly in line with Russia and Canada), but they don't produce one third of the world's nickel. Indonesia produces one third of the world's nickel and they're producing over 1 million tons per year.

I wonder what the sweetheart deal for the french is here. I remember their uranium deal being comically one-sided.

Macron said he would delay the implementation of the anti-Kanak constitutional amendment (a delay is only temporary) while snarling that French troops would remain “as long as necessary.”

Don't like the way that sounds...

It gets a lot worse when you're German and the most common slur for brown people in your language is derived from the name of the Kanak people.

Gee, I can't imagine why so many countries around the world aren't so ridiculously eager to jump in alongside Europe with every measure they take (specifically the anti-China, anti-Russia measures)

What's up with colonial France taking so many L's recently. Why is it always a French colony?
