Fools, disney started with killing Disney animation, then it came back, then they killed it again, back alive, dead, alive, dead and now it's a day by day thing.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago

They're just practicing their necromancy in preparation of bringing Walt back

[–] InputZero@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 months ago

What is dead may never die.

[–] Outsider9042@aussie.zone 30 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Damn Disney, they ruined Disney.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago

You just made an enemy for life! - some mouse guy

[–] I_Miss_Daniel@lemmy.world 26 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I guess there could work as opposed to they're.

[–] FederatedSaint@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It could, but you're really giving them the benefit of the doubt.

They screwed up, let's be honest with ourselves.

[–] I_Miss_Daniel@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Yes. Sometimes I wonder if it's deliberate to get the grammar police to respond, or if it's just organic.

[–] pugsnroses77@sh.itjust.works 22 points 4 months ago (4 children)

idk. luca, turning red, coco, encanto have all seemed pretty popular. Moana was huge when it was released and still now

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Wish was horseshit though. Completely forgettable, even the kids don’t want to watch it again.

[–] xthexder@l.sw0.com 5 points 4 months ago

I watched the first half of it on a plane ride and literally forgot about it until this comment. I don't think I'll ever see the ending

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

Coco is probably my favorite Pixar movie. My grandfather had Alzheimer’s and near the end he was largely unable to communicate but still knew how to sing and remembered words to songs.

When Mama Coco sings at the end it broke me. I cried harder than I’ve probably ever cried in my adult life. It felt incredible. I realized I hadn’t really ever mourned my grandfather, because his death was years of slowly fading away. Such a powerful catharsis.

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Luca sucked, turning red had positive reviews but wasn't memorable, Coco had some great songs and some staying power, encanto rode high on Lin Manuel Miranda's lyrics, and Moana was strong.

Strange worlds fell flat, Elemental failed, Wish flopped, Lightyear was a let down, Raya and the Last Dragon was only "fine", and Rons Gone Wrong was forgettable, but mostly good.

Not to mention their live action failures.

[–] Asetru@feddit.org 3 points 4 months ago

Luca sucked

What's wrong with you, stupido?

[–] Elextra@literature.cafe 1 points 3 months ago

I honestly loved Elemental and Encanto. Coco also solid but would be my third fav of the ones you listed.

[–] Tier1BuildABear@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

So popular they're already doing it again!

[–] mr_satan@monyet.cc 21 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Hmm… I've stopped watching Marvel after the endgame, I just felt oversaturated with superhero stories. Never recovered.

I've never really liked Star wars. I was exposed to it at an age where all I cared was cool action sequences and the prequels did it better. Tried watching the new ones and they were just boring.

Pixar seems to be doing fine? The second inside out was fine. I mean it's more of the same as the first one, but it's a good kids movie. Not sure about their other stuff, but I don't recall anything particularly bad.

Yeah. Marvel killed Marvel all on their own, Disney just let them do it. Between Marvel Studios releasing far too many films and series to keep quality up and interest and DC not doing much about Hack Snyder and his astroturfing, the comics-based media have really gone downhill.

[–] mr_satan@monyet.cc 3 points 4 months ago

The new animated Spider-man movies were awesome, fucking loved it. Also Deadpool still seems to keep up the quality when comparing the first to. The boys also rock, I just hope the show doesn't drag on too long. I'd say superhero media still has good stuff, it's just way more saturatred, so good stuff has to stand out somehow.

[–] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 18 points 4 months ago (2 children)

This seems like wishcasting.

Everyone is welcome to their subjective opinion, but I don't think any of these are really suffering that hard.

[–] JayDee@lemmy.ml 33 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Marvel and Starwars have been taking heat for pumping out boring and poorly written films for a while now. I think Pixar's stuff is still mostly decent, though. That being said, I also expect a completely different standard of work from Pixar since it's for kids first and foremost.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

I'm pretty sure he's pointing out that they still make a shit ton of money which is all that really matters to them.

[–] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That's fair, I think you're right that it's subjective. I think Disney managed to pretty much kill the main Star Wars movies at least for me. That said, we also got some pretty great stuff that we definitely wouldn't have gotten otherwise so it's not all bad. It was really sad to see LucasArts gutted and EA get exclusive rights to the license for a while though.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

In exchange for 3 shitty movies, we did get a CRAPLOAD of other Star Wars stuff. Animated: final season of Clone Wars, 3 seasons of Bad Batch exploring immediate post-order-66, Rebels (Mother. Fucking. THRAWN), and more that I don't remember.

Several live action shows: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Ahsoka (MORE. Mother. Fucking. THRAWN), Book of Boba Fet, and more, I think, but again, I can't remember.

[–] sartalon@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Imagine if D&D hadn't gotten fired, how much worse that trilogy would have been.

Still, Disney seems incapable of recognizing good vs bad writing.

You are right, we've gotten some pretty awesome content, but then they fuck away most of the movies.

"anything i don't like is dead"

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

"As if the creative future of the Western entertainment industry wasn’t already looking dire enough to begin with, Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that, in an ostensible attempt to net the company a win after a string of back-to-back-to-back-to-back losses, the foreseeable future will see the House of Mouse turning away from original works in favor of producing easily marketable sequels."

https://boundingintocomics.com/2024/05/07/disney-ceo-bob-iger-reveals-company-now-dedicating-itself-to-sequels-over-original-productions-theyre-known-and-it-takes-less-in-terms-of-marketing/

It's eerily reminiscent of the Disney era of direct to VHS sequels that almost killed the company.

I hate the idea of going all in on IP they have versus original entertainment. The biggest attractions at Disneyland were original (jungle cruise, pirates of the Caribbean, the haunted mansion.)

As a former Disneyland park cast member, imo they have lost their way and what made them iconic storytellers. Leaderships has lost its creative edge and is writing films by committee. They want a culturally significant film they can virtue signal with and are trying to force it from the boardroom instead of hiring and encouraging diverse writers and giving them the freedom to tell their story.

Cannot say how truly dead it is, but judging on how I have yet to see any sane adult say almost anything good about Wish, I assume it's nearly on deaths doorstep already. With all other 3D animated Rickey Rats original and not subsidiary company films you had adults that liked them but I have yet to find a single adult with no mental defects that likes/liked Wish.

If Wish is setting the standard for their 3D films, you can beat it's on death's door, if not far from it.

[–] wesley@yall.theatl.social 1 points 4 months ago

Wish is okay. It's nowhere near as good as Frozen, Moana, or Encanto though

[–] Marduk73@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 months ago

Their there...

[–] TheRealCharlesEames@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago

Don’t forget the parks

[–] MoonMelon@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 months ago

DisneyToon, BlueSky, Circle 7, Imagemovers Digital... could be a lot more doors.
