What the hell is "failed to gentrify" supposed to mean?

The poors are visible and it isn't a glass and steel Steve Jobs wet dream yet. bateman-business-card

The street is human scale and the power lines aren't all buried in the extremely earthquake prone ground, how awful

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago

It's not up to the standards of a "Prestige City" as neoliberal ghouls call it.

They want to be international treat enjoyers but also want to make everything in their reach the same bleak bleached bland gentrified sterile corporate-art place as they had just come from too.

[-] Llituro@hexbear.net 23 points 2 weeks ago

it is possible to work on the internet and power lines without digging up the sidewalk

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago

And the earthquakes that happen every week or so are much less likely to damage those lines

[-] Awoo@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago

I don't think this is true? Surely not? Tokyo has underground railway and that's fine.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago

I imagine those are built more robustly than a buried copper or fiber line

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

I'm guessing Japanese has a term for the process by which small towns and exurbs got absorbed into Tokyo, the word roughly translates to gentrify, but it doesn't quite work.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

Very charitable interpretation

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

Always my first assumption when I see something very goofy written by a person who isn't speaking their native tongue lol.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

I assumed it was a cracker expat because reddit but looks like you might be right

That’s ‘failed to gentrify’?

That is what a gentrified street in my city looks like lmao

[-] regul@hexbear.net 53 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah. Not to be all "X, Japan", but I have to imagine the roughest neighborhood in Tokyo is still walkable, populated, accessible to transit, not a food desert, etc.

[-] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

No, every street corner in Tokyo has street fights where people do pro wrestling moves, hit each other with bicycles, and roll bowling balls at each other's feet, according to the most realistic video game ever made.

Like a dragon?

[-] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago

every urban design NEEDS to have a gaudily dressed man with one eye to jump you from the sewer with a baseball bat majima-everywhere

[-] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

You forgot about how he fights by break dancing.

[-] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 46 points 2 weeks ago

It failed to gentrify and that's said as a good thing, right? anakin-padme-2

This is nicer than any city street in America

[-] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

Is that supposed to look bad? It's a very clean city street, decent houses on the side, I don't see what I'm supposed to complain about?

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 25 points 2 weeks ago

How am I supposed to drive my Ford Childkiller through this street? There's no way it could fit!

There were me too, ku-too etc etc. feminists are so rare in Japan, they are the squeaky wheels that never get oiled. Very rampant only on x and other wise people give zero about what feminists say, especially. Women here want to stay feminine, and I don't think that'll change any time soon. A lot of Jaoanese women are suffering from misandry and you probably know why. The culture here is deeply chauvinistic traditionally in a lot of ways at the same time it's not. It's a weird mix.

Women here want to stay feminine

What he really means is:

Men want to continue treating women like shit and they are too afraid to speak up because doing so could not only get them fired/blacklisted/etc. but also make them targets of male violence.

[-] RNAi@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago

Sike they are targets of violence anyways
