I’m so fine with them killing off as many franchises as possible. Might force them to make an original movie again.

[-] Z3k3@lemmy.world 92 points 2 months ago

They will just reboot it pretending it's original

[-] frezik@midwest.social 12 points 1 month ago

Case in point: another Battlestar Galactica reboot is apparently in the works.

[-] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

I'm not sure I mind that. The last one was pretty good. Not sure about the spinoff as I stopped watching it after two eps maybe.

[-] frezik@midwest.social 6 points 1 month ago

The Caprica spinoff, you mean? It was really slow for most of the season, suddenly picked up at the end and got really good, and then it was canceled.

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That was my recollection too. Super slow all the way up to the finale when everything blew up.

[-] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, that one. Too bad about it.

[-] dwemthy@lemdro.id 10 points 1 month ago

This 100%. It's still an IP that they own and when it's brought out of the vault it's new to a bunch of people and nostalgic to others

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago

Hahaha, good one.

[-] MeDuViNoX@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

Or just remake even more of the same thing with less diversity overall, like Spider-man & Batman.

[-] refalo@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago

Nothing is original, ever. Because everything is a remix

It's funny how people say this, yet when original movies come out, nobody goes to see them. Disney is a good example. People bitch that Disney only makes sequels and reboots and doesn't make original movies anymore. Yet the original movies they've released over the last 2 years have flopped and people don't go see them. Strange worlds, wish, etc all failed. And the moment they release a sequel it makes a billion in the box office.

It's no wonder they make more sequels than originals. They'd be stupid and bad at business if they didn't.

But those movies simply weren't good.

Wikipedia even states that Strange World partly bombed because of poor word-of-mouth (which I definitely believe). And Wish got video essays and articles en masse about how it didn't deliver.

In theory it helps by funneling fans between The Avengers, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, for which they have refined the process of pumping out content and merchandise with lower cost and risk

declining ticket sales

In practice people just stop going to the movies

But hey, I guess the profit margins are better

Large corporations rarely innovate and try new things. Most innovation comes from smaller players with limited market share taking risks.

Large companies buy out smaller ones who create cash cows from taking large risks. The large company then milks the cash cows until they are completely dead.

The consolidation of studios to a few megacorporations has led to this inevitable end. The solution is simple: break them up. If we have 30 or so similar sized studios competing, we will get better movies/TV again.

I'm surprised there wasn't a big drop from Netflix and big ass TV's.

[-] booly@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago

There was. If you map that onto the growth in population you'll see that tickets per person has been dropping since about 2000.

I’ve been to like six or seven movies with my partner…

We’ve been together for 12 years.

We’ve seen thousands of movies, though—thank you, trackers.

[-] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 points 1 month ago

2020 kinda accelerated the existing trends and got a majority of people willing to watch films at home instead of in theaters. Before that enough people really enjoyed the theater experience that it wasn't too much of a threat to the business model

[-] MewtwoLikesMemes@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Big ass TVs?

Doesn't sound sanitary.

[-] HarbingerOfTomb@lemmy.world 38 points 1 month ago

Is this in reference to a particular IP?

[-] jimrob4@midwest.social 21 points 1 month ago

Yeah, but think of the profits when people have absolutely forgotten the original release and the movie can just be recast 30 years later and passed off as original.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

I get the joke, but what is this from?

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

The Refer Madness Musical. It's hilarious. Kristen Bell, Brian Weber, Ana Gastyer, the dude from Tales from the Crypt, and Neve Campbell.

[-] jadedwench@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

🎶Little Mary Sunshine🎶

I love this movie. Reefer Madness.

[-] zante@lemmy.wtf 9 points 1 month ago

Ah yeah the famed “cross generational fandom” upon which Hollywood is so dependent.

Don’t they just put an ad on the side of happy meal box to create the hype they need ?

[-] 2ugly2live@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

This movie is hilarious. Never fails to make me smile.
