On this day in 1897, the Lattimer Massacre occurred near Hazelton, Pennsylvania when a Sheriff's posse fired into a crowd of unarmed, striking miners, killing 19. Miners, mostly Eastern European immigrants, had been protesting for better pay and union recognition.

A week prior, over 3,000 miners had gone on strike, demanding better pay and an end to the forced use of the company store. On the morning of September 10th, approximately 400 miners peacefully marched to a newly opened coal mine in Lattimer to support a new United Mine Workers (UMW) union there.

After refusing an order to disperse by a Luzerne County sheriff's posse, the posse fired into the crowd. Nineteen miners were killed and several dozen were wounded.

Despite the fact that sheriffs had been overhead joking about how many strikers they would kill that morning, as well as medical evidence that demonstrated miners were mostly shot in the back, the sheriff and seventy-three deputies were acquitted at trial, insisting that they were charged by the crowd.

The massacre was a turning point in the history of the United Mine Workers (UMW), who received more than 10,000 new members in the aftermath of the massacre.

went for a swim and it fucking rules

i can already feel my fitness increasing and can go for longer sets. swam a 600m without stopping and about 1.2km total in a 45 min sesh. I only got back in the pool because 4 weeks ago i literally couldn't walk with a back injury.

while bullying people into swimming will be harder than bullying people into using a rowing machine, go fucking swimming. it's peaceful. it increases your lung capacity for bonghits. it works your whole body. it leaves you LESS SORE than before you start. GOAT workout fr

I have a big beard and sunglasses and I'm so tempted to take a car selfie and larp as an American Republican

[–] iridaniotter@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

North Korea confounds me. Why does their urban planning look so car-centric from the pictures I've seen when their society is not? They'll have these giant asphalt boulevards with just a trickle of traffic and a bunch of trolleybuses for people to actually get around in. Really confusing.

My dog got diagnosed with Diabetes. I took her in for a rash and some urinary issues, totally came out of left field. Super thankful it was caught early and she doesn't have any other issues stemming from it.

I gotta say they gave us some trash syringes. Its so hard not to draw bubbles, it's been taking a few tries to get a good dose. Sometimes the needle even looks crooked?

IANAMD needles are supposed to be pretty straight though kitty-cri-texas

all the best to you and your pup

Earwax is so stupid like wtf let's have a sensory organ that literally disables itself with its protective coating

I HATE HAVING TO MAKE SPECIAL LITTLE MEALS FOR THE PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES

I have other shit to do, fuck

I made this girl some special stir fry tonight with diced chicken thigh/broccoli/carrots/bell pepper and put it on rice. That's so much better than the food she usually gets because usually i just get told "bake her some nasty frozen cod" or some shit. But tonight it was on me and I had time for it so i did something nice

she didn't even show up for dinner!

Every fascist should get to go out the way Mishima and the second for his seppuku did. Painful, embarassing, hilarious.

Good morning Comrades,

heart-sickle

Friend just started a no-pre-req political class in a generally left-field and it's already devolved to libs frothing about Putin while also lamenting the treatment of BLM. It's an online class and I suggested to them to get ahead and control the early (graded) discussion boards with crypto-communist theory regarding ideology (which y'all kindly helped me helped them with a ton) but ended up toning it way down to avoid getting clocked, or our personal fear of potentially secretly blacklisted from the profession.

Right now they're publicly in a leftist position, lamenting sectarian infighting on the left compared to unity on the right. Let out some feelers to left-sounding people but those people later posted anti-communist stuff from the course materials.

Online class, most things said are going to be on record with full name attached, don't want to accidentally get my friend in trouble but it also seemed like prime territory for making some friends and networking new leftists.

top-cop

These online class formats seem a good fit for left posters but very dangerous for us specifically since there is a fucking cop attending the class and posts are all on record. Anybody have any experience with this?

I want to ask about potential dogwhistles but we're now thinking of pulling back completely. It's a shame because I want to help agitate (class forum is full of weak libs) and my friend wants to make leftist/queer friends.

I love my trans comrades.

The psych ward is awful and the most depressing place on earth. How're you supposed to tell people how you're actually doing when you know that's just what's gonna end up happening to you

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago

I know! I hated doing it during nursing school, I got so pissed at the staff about controlling smoking times and I definitely identified more with the patients - they said I was having emotion transfer which a lot of people get, but I just felt so angry about the whole thing and it was one of the first times I like broke down crying in public. I really don't like the whole design of psych units, at this point straight abolition would be better but it would also hurt a lot of people to just have NO CARE on the outside. We definitely need better alternative institutions in things like mental healthcare very desperately. I like the early psychosis intervention model but that doesn't cover everyone obviously. There's also this town in Belgium that has had its residents like take in people who need care, they don't place family with family, and it's been a thing for like 600 years - that sounds appealing but it would be hard to implement anywhere else, like if you move their you know you may be asked to do that because they've been doing it since the middle ages, and it's hard to imagine individualist USians agreeing to anything like that

Favorite thing to do is to go into a group of people and ask innocently what a "Tulpa" is and if anyone gives me even a sliver of fear or anxiety I immediately pounce on them. I do it so that they know that not even in their private thoughts, not even in their own mind are they free from bullying.

Unlike you fucking amateurs I take bullying seriously. I not only research shit like Tulpas but I also have one just so I can more easily poke at the anxieties of the people I bully.

I don't even get raytracing in most games. Oh, now they game runs terribly but at least we have mirrors! I don't know how they manage it but we've had mirrors in games for a while. Hitman 3 is annoying because raytracing makes some windows more reflective. But when it's turned off a lot of windows are always perfectly reflective, even without SSR. So why not just make all of them like that without needing raytracing?

[–] RION@hexbear.net 10 points 2 years ago

It depends a lot on implementation. Some of them (like Elden Ring to my knowledge) do little to justify the performance hit. Others like The Witcher 3, which admittedly has dogwater DX12 performance, give really cool effects and atmospheric improvements. Check out this Digital Foundry video—the way light bouncing effects visuals is incredible, and dark areas are much improved compared to the dingy blue-green cubemap stuff of the raster lighting system. Perhaps that also could have been solved with different raster techniques, but ultimately I think ray tracing is going to be the way forward. Rasterized lighting is something of a hacky solution to approximate real lighting, and as ray tracing gets increasing adoptions (current gen consoles are doing it now!) I think dev skill will increase and performance impact will drop considerably

Everyone I know is so kind and understanding and accommodating and willing to help and shit. I've had so much opportunity and support. And that just makes me feel even worse about what failure I am.

they're not bankers, they're not doing it for a return on some investment. They care about you.

Don't kick yourself because you haven't met your own lofty standards of where you ought to be. Just keep going.

Women's clothes sizes are bullshit. Find me a woman that's that small, go ahead I'll wait. They don't exist. And that was a medium! If it was children's clothes that'd be a medium but they're not. Now I gotta order a new skirt.

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Some women have small bodies comrade shrug-outta-hecks and FWIW in my experience they do not think it's funny or cute to compare them to a child
