Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

TIL that the first country to officially declare a national bird was India, with the Indian peacock in 1963: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_symbols_of_India

I've seen more bald eagles of late and I'm in Canada. Are they fleeing for some reason?

At least the Canada geese are going the other way. Those things are the devil! Chasing after me on my bike hissing…

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago

Probably, Americans love to hunt them into extinction.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 1 points 16 hours ago

I thought it was the turkey

thats america, always focused on the important things like naming post offices and national whatevers.

still have the dead-kid tax required to keep the 2nd amendment alive and well.

The bald eagle bill was one of 50 pieces of legislation that Biden signed into law on Christmas Eve

But you're worried about this one bill

The funny thing is that people now think Franklin was joking because they think he was talking about the big, fat, dumb animal on farms most people think of as turkeys and not these dinosaurs I see around here:

Note the great big spike on the back of the legs near grass level. They will rip your fucking belly open if you get between them and their mate.

Oh, and they can fly. They can't fly far, but they can fly.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world 8 points 19 hours ago

Yeah wild turkeys don't fuck around. They will ruin your week if they feel like it

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So... Will you guys start using their real call instead of the Red Hawk's?

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Nah im just gonna use the hawk tua call

[–] kusivittula@sopuli.xyz 19 points 1 day ago

and soon it will die of bird flu

[–] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What about the noble turkey?? Ben Franklin just rolling plumply in his grave right now.

[–] HoneyMustardGas@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Then we can't eat turkeys anymore because the national bird is usually protected.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

We'll eat eagles.

[–] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

The absolute irony being that eating things is a major case -for- species conservation, like turkeys, which had a population rebound thanks largely to hunting license funds.

:)

I have never been more proud to be an American than right now, when we as a country made official a thing that most Americans already thought was a thing. No effort wasted it other important tasks passed over getting this important piece of legislation through. God Bless the USA.

Missed chance to swap to the much more badass golden eagle. Or be honest about the state of American democracy and choose the dodo..

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Wouldn't 250 years be in 2026?

There are a few living near here, I'll let them know. I'm sure they'll be thrilled.

"Thanks Joe, now I am officially as free as a Bald Eagle, I'm ready to become president next month"
