Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On this day in 1959, U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista fled the country following the victory of Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) at the Battle of Santa Clara, marking the successful conclusion of the Cuban Revolution.

The 26th of July Movement takes its name from the date of with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, however, the movement bearing this name was not formally organized until the attackers were released from prison in 1955. Public resistance continued sporadically until November 1956, when 80 members of the M-26-7 returned from exile.

Soon after landing on the island, a separate revolutionary group, the "Directorio Revoluncionari Estudiantil" (DRE), unsuccessfully attempted an attack on the Presidential Palace in Havana.

Throughout 1957, armed resistance from groups such as the DRE and M-26-7 would escalate. After a failed offensive by the government against rebels in the summer of 1958, the rebels launched a major counter-offensive.

On December 28th, 1958, after a fraudulent election in favor of Batista, revolutionary forces reached the city of Santa Clara. Seizing equipment from an armored train intended to transport government reinforcements, the rebels quickly captured the city, prompting Batista to panic and flee to the Dominican Republic with a personal fortune of more than $300 million.

In the following days, revolutionary forces entered Havana with no resistance, and Castro established a provisional government. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along Marxist–Leninist lines, becoming the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

Batista later settled in fascist Spain, dying there in 1973 at the age of 72.

Talking about how depressing Soviet housing is. And besides the fact that it’s housing people, has anyone who has made the criticism ever been inside of a tiny 1 bedroom condo of the “pretty” glass and steel condo buildings? Besides being small the shape is actually deranged. Canada hasn’t produced a single livable apartment in like 35 years. It’s actually fucking crazy, it does feel like as soon as the Soviet Union collapsed the west decided it could stop pretending it ever cared about people.

The mouth taping did not work as well last night, might have to change the setup a little bit. Hitherto it's been two pieces in a "+" arrangement, we may be on that "x" grind tonight

I can't wait to hang out with him the entire evening because he doesn't know any of my friends and he's shy... He's such a cute lost puppy and I just wanna take care of himmmmmmm

I got a new sound system for my home theater, and it has Dolby Atmos, so I have been looking at media that has Atmos audio to be able to test it. The PS5 can play spatial audio so I can get one of those and play... umm...

I bought a bigger bag of the mix of Japanese green tea and matcha I drank every week while watching Shogun (the 2024 TV series), and I was kind of afraid I only liked the tea back then because I was enjoying the show. Turns out it might have been the other way around, this shit is delicious as hell.

I have just had the weirdest 24 hours of my life, capping off the weirdest week of my life. I have no idea how to begin to summarize it.

What would y’all say is the weakest link of the right?

Unfortunately, in the mainstream world the left is generally a socially acceptable target and the right is idolized to be completely above criticism. But back in the late 2000s and early 2010s it was less one-sided. However, the right found one group in particular (people who hated men on tumblr) and spread exclusively snapshots of them saying something stupid out-of-context and also people snarkily winning arguments against them. I’d say this helped us get to a point where the overton window is where it is now.

I doubt we have the “digital manpower” for lack of a better term, but I argue we should find the least sympathetic sub-ideology of the right, and relentlessly dunk on them. My best guess would be incels but even they’ve gained a lot of ground, so there could be some other group.

to return a value in rust you put down the value but don't end with a semicolon. Just make it so you write return? Why does every modern language have to have some feature that saves like a second when writing but makes everything annoying to read?

I think I was kind of unfair with yakuza kiwami since I played the og was feeling apathetic of this version but I'm coming around. Still doing all the substories and checking off the completion list before I really tackle the main story.

Car stopped at the crosswalk outside my mapartment was playing In Bloom by Nirvana, full of frat dudes singing along and clearly driving drunk. I'm not a big Nirvana fan but I am an unintentional irony fan.

just got banned from r/news for saying New Orleans attack was karma for America's wars.

An MMA fight where you engage someone who specializes in a particular style or aspect and proceed to lose because of it is the highest level of schadenfreude that you can attain without the associated anger/pain in your heart. For example, the healthcare CEO tops the charts with schadenfreude, but it's because he was literally a profiteering vampire and there are a dozen reasons to be mad at him. In Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm, Ronda, who is an olympic judo medalist, tried to strike with a kickboxing specialist and gets pieced up like a local library when I have a library card. Do I think Ronda is stinky and bad? Naah. It just makes you go "damn, that was a bad idea." In, ironically, Holly Holm vs Kayla Harrison, Holly attempts to grapple with 2x gold medal olympic judo medalist and proceeds to get subbed.
