/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

Fun will now commence.

The basis for my theory:

If we developed warp drive, genetic manipulation, and transporter tech, I’d reckon even before that we’d first figure out how to make dogs live for hundreds of years. Because that’s easier and of course we would.

I’ve seen people post that it must have been like Porthos v9 because of the time difference, but there’s no way that dog didn’t outlive Archer by decades, because if we’re going to do anything good as a species, it will be making sure our dogs outlive us.

So Scotty lost the OG Porthos.

So, funny thing about this, is it's not at all true. I have a friend who is a vet, and he quite succinctly clarified with some good journal articles that the real issue with dogs' short lives is we just don't care. If we had been breeding for longer lives at any point, they would have no issue with living for decades longer than their current spans. It's never been a priority (and might even be a poor business decision) for breeders to focus on longevity. Even health is only a passing concern for their 'working' period.

Maybe humanity will become better. Someday.

One of the reasons that cats tend to live longer than dogs there's a lot of cats are just general muggies, they basically bread themselves.

You can always tell something funky has happened when there's a litter of black and white cats and then a random orange one in the mix. There's always some throwback to an earlier ancestor. But that basically never happens in dogs.

There is more going on in the background with cat coat colors, genetically, than dog coat colors, genetically. While the variations are huge in dogs (here's just one breed's possibilities), it's quite possible to know the chances of the offspring from what the current generation are and what their parents were. Here's another look at that. Horses are another one where there's enough going on that you can't always tell what they'll throw.

This is excellent! Thanks for taking the time to share. It bothered me that the quality of the Guide to Housecat Colors and Patterns is too poor to read who the original artist is. I spent some time finding Joumana Medlej (https://majnouna.com/), the original artist, who has an extensive catalogue of work documented on their website.

I cannot find the housecat colors image in higher quality on Joumana's site. My speculation is it's included in the Artist's Guide to Cats eBook on gumroad. I noticed the previews on cerdarseed, searched that site, and found a much higher quality version. While it's fully readable in that small viewport the site owner is trying to prevent folks from downloading the image directly.

It seems they're loading the image from cerdarseed.com/tuts/catcol#.jpg (where # represent numbers 1-8) and stitching it together on the loaded page. I think that's an interesting technical choice worth noting.

Cats are also capable of having multiple fathers per litter, so even taking into account the weirdness of cat coats, you can get more diversity than you expect if another male happens to be wandering by.

That's depressing

[–] Shialac@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah, most purebred dogs have way shorter Lifespans than random mixed dogs

I’m pretty sure that genetic manipulation was only forbidden in human beings.

Also remember that Jonathan met Arik Soong. Porthos could have been augmented more than The Dog (by Tendi).

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago

If I’d met any Soong, I’d have made sure my dog lived forever. Immortal Porthos confirmed.

We're talking about this good boi, right?

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The pattern buffer was corrupted during transport, which explains the physiological differences.

In which episode did Scotty lose a beagle?

[–] hallettj@leminal.space 10 points 1 week ago

Scotty: How do you think I wound up here? Had a little debate with my instructor on relativistic physics and how it pertains to subspace travel. He seemed to think that the range of transporting something like a... like a grapefruit was limited to about 100 miles. I told him that I could not only beam a grapefruit from one planet to the adjacent planet in the same system - which is easy, by the way - I could do it with a life form. So, I tested it out on Admiral Archer's prized beagle.

Kirk: Wait, I know that dog. What happened to it?

Scotty: I'll tell you when it reappears. Ahem. I don't know, I do feel guilty about that.

Scotty in the 2009 Star Trek movie explaining how he wound up in an especially remote posting.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

In the reboot movie.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Reboot movie. He was improving transporter tech, put an unnamed cougharchercough Admiral's beagle into the system to test it and it went away tae fuck. Which is why he's been assigned to the bumfuck artic station in the movie.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes thanks. They did call Archer out by name, though. Scotty says ‘so I tested it on Admiral Archer’s prize beagle’. It was explicitly that dog. (eta I just rewatched that scene to be sure)

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You do realize this is Kelvin Timeline we are talking about, not Prime Universe?

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Yes, and Porthos existed before the divergence, so it still would have been the same dog in that timeline.
