Research council launches 100m kroner fund as Norwegian government calls for the protection of academic freedom

Norway has launched a new scheme to lure top international researchers amid growing pressure on academic freedom in the US under the Trump administration.

Following in the footsteps of multiple institutions across Europe, the Research Council of Norway on Wednesday launched a 100m kroner (£7.2m) fund to make it easier to recruit researchers from other countries.

The initiative is open to researchers from around the world, but it was expanded and accelerated after the Trump administration announced substantial cuts last month.

Hello Lemmings! For the past year or so, I've been working on a solo project, and I'm kinda close to being finished with it! It's a punk rock album, made with mostly open-source tools (the only non-FOSS stuff is a couple of plugins that didn't have good open-source alternatives)!

I've seen other folks promote their games here, but so far I haven't seen any music done this way, and I was wondering if it's maybe not allowed? Some sort of Lemmy faux pas? If it is, indeed, allowed, then what communities would be amenable to maybe a twice weekly post? Should one make their own community for this purpose? What about a general purpose community for self-promotion, i.e. "imadethis" back on the old place? As you can see, much to consider. (I don't have anything out yet, so this post in itself is not self-promotion.)

What say ye, o wise Lemmings?

The image on the right is how the settings app look on macOS 12. On macOS 13 (2022) it was changed to look more to the one on the left, with all the sections selectable in a sidebar and a smaller window. Many users have complained about it, saying that it sacrificed function for form and is part of making macOS more like iOS by mindlessly copying phone UIs onto computers which it isn't meant for. I think its alright, not terrible. And it's the norm with settings apps looking like that in Windows, KDE, Gnome, and some other DEs.

April 10th decision to disrupt trade with China set in motion a delayed supply chain disaster whose consequences are only now beginning to surface. Once again, the mechanics of this crisis highlight the systemic vulnerabilities of an economic model built on globally dispersed production and just-in-time supply chains.

Container ships departing China after April 10th take 30 days to reach Los Angeles, 45 days to reach Houston or Chicago, and 55 days to reach New York. As a result, the economic fallout from the trade disruption will hit these regions in waves of warehouse layoffs, trucking slowdowns, and product shortages. By May 10th, Los Angeles, the primary US gateway for Chinese imports, will feel the first tremors. Trucking jobs will vanish as fewer containers arrive, idle warehouses will shed workers, and so on. By late May, Chicago and Houston will follow as their rail and sea routes become starved of goods. New York, dependent on the longest shipping times, will linger a bit longer before the effects fully manifest.

Even if the White House reverses course by May 31st and drops tariffs to 0%, the damage has already been done. Assuming an optimistic scenario where Chinese factories immediately resume production, it would still take 30 days to restock Los Angeles. A seven-week policy error has triggered three to four months of economic paralysis, with cascading unemployment and fractured supply chains. This disruption is quite similar to that of the pandemic lockdowns, exposing the fragility of a capitalist system that prioritizes profit-driven efficiency. Just-in-time logistics, designed to minimize inventory, leave no buffer for disruption. And as always, the burden will fall on truckers, warehouse staff, and retail employees who will bear the brunt of these policy failures.

However, it's highly dubious to assume that Chinese factories and workers will docilely resume production as if nothing happened. China's dominance in manufacturing critical goods gives it leverage, and exports to the US account for merely 2% of its GDP. China is well-positioned to weather an economic conflict with minimal domestic impact. On the other hand, a protracted shutdown will devastate US consumers and businesses dependent on Chinese imports.

America's primary economic leverage lies in its consumer market. However, as the US enters a recession, consumption will drop, undermining its very appeal as a trade partner. The reality is that the US is no longer the linchpin of the global economy it once was. It remains a large market, but not an indispensable one. As the US economy continues to shrink, trade-dependent nations will have little choice but to restructure their economies away from reliance on the US and seek new partners. China, already in discussions with the EU and Canada, is well-positioned to capitalize on this shift.

The US is like a driver speeding toward a brick wall, oblivious to the inevitable collision. By the time the crash is acknowledged, braking will be futile. This is the inevitable result of a system that prioritizes profit over resilience and short-term gains over sustainable planning. The coming months will test whether the US can extricate itself from yet another self-inflicted disaster.

Ukraine said on Thursday that it had failed to reach a deal with holders of $2.6bn of its debt, in a blow to its hopes of securing a restructuring ahead of a payment deadline next month.

The country’s finance ministry said it would “consider all available options” and continue negotiations after the failure of opening talks in Washington this week with holders of its so-called GDP warrants.

Last month the IMF said that “if left untreated” the warrants “constitute an important risk” for the stability of an ongoing $15.5bn bailout and Kyiv’s restructuring of more than $20bn in bonds last year.

“The GDP warrants were designed for a world that no longer exists,” said Ukraine’s finance ministry on Thursday. “Ukraine’s modest economic growth in 2023 was not a sign of surging prosperity but a fragile rebound from a nearly 30 per cent downturn caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion.”

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child clearly expresses that minors have rights to freedom of expression and access to information online, as well as the right to privacy.

These rights would be steamrolled by age verification requirements.

So, a while ago it came out that my uncle(who's from outside the family and married in) cheated on my aunt (mom's sister).

They're still married. Honestly not sure what they'll do since he is the one with the job and our family doesn't have enough to support her and her children.

But I just don't get it. I get falling out of love or even finding other people besides your spouse attractive, but cheating is just such a layered lasagna of shit.

1.You want to eat your cake and have it too. (There's an entire community of people who cheat on their spouses called "cake eaters."). I don't understand what you get out of that though unless you're just really lustful (and even I wouldn't do that and I'm a lustful removed). If you want to break up/divorce that's fine but you can't just have emotional/physical relationships without changing anything. Which leads to point 2

2.How little fucking respect do you have for your wife and family? Because the thing is that youre denying your partner any autonomy in the relationship. You dont even respect them enough to even talk about it, or you don't respect them enough to think they deserve to know about it or will ever find out.

I mean look, there been some stories I've heard where I understand, if the relationship is already dead. It still sucks but I can understand if it's inevitable anyway. But otherwise i just can't conceptualize how selfish and shit you have to be to do it.

And I wouldn't ask if it wasn't so common. I mean it doesn't happen in every relationship but it's so common basically everyone is paranoid their partner is cheating on them. So I just really don't get it
